Vision is one of our most important senses. Reduced vision that triggers the need for corrective glasses is one of the most common disorders associated with the eyes. Crossed eyes are another such common disorder that affects the eyes. In medical terms it is also known as Strabismus. Dear Mr. lybrate-user The senario you have given of your son, If his squint (I presume Convergent squint most likely) is fully corrected by glasses then surgery is not required. If even with glasses there is residual squint then surgery should be done early as remanent squint can detoriate vision in long run. It can develop lazy eye.
Physical consultation will be ideal.

It has got nothing to do with blindness or become old like 40 years old. Squint correction is very important for binocularity that is two eyes seeing together at one point. And if your squint does not improve with glasses then most likely it needs to be treated surgically .Because you are already 23 years old so not much of gain in binocularity is expected even after surgery. Need complete eye check up by a Ophthalmologist.
