You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check up to as...more

There are some people who are on a reactive mode and will quit only after they have got a disease or reach the worst condition in their abuse. In addiction parlance this is called ‘Hitting Rock Bottom’, that is, you will cease the abuse only when you have suffered the worst affect of the substance. Sometimes that stage may be a terminal stage and there is no turning back: it has become too late. You must live by the adage that ‘Prevention is better than cure’. To quit do the following: When quit...more

Loss of control over the addiction is not surprising since that is a major part of the enslavement to substances. That also means that if you want you can give it up anywhere, anytime. But the better reason to give up smoking is to relate to the harmful effects of tobacco. Also the peer pressure is very great while in college and in the hostel, and it appears that you are not able to say ‘no’. To be ‘in’ with the crowd you may hesitate to refuse to join them and go along with the flow. But this ...more

When you smoke you damage your lungs: when you smoke more you damage your lungs more: and if you smoke less you damage your lungs no less – well may be a little less. Your desire to smoke less is most welcome but it is not enough. You must quit your smoking completely and you must do it now, seriously. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. There are no health benefits of smoking. Smoking causes lung and oral cancer as well as interstitial lung disease. It affects peripheral blood vessels adversely and can cause respiratory and circulatory issues. It is advisable to quit immediately. Consult a psychiatrist with experience in deaddiction.
With the right medication and counseling it is likely that you will be able to quit smoking successfully.

Detailed assessment is needed. Like the reason behind smoking, number of cigarettes and comorbid medical condition. Next you should be assessed for withdrawal from smoking and for reducing further craving. Thre are medications to reduce nicotine craving too. If you consult a psychiatrist they will be able to help you. All the best.

That is called tolerance and dependence: that is, over a period of time the body adjusts to the dose and wants more cigarettes for the same effect. You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting a reduction in smoking. You are obviously lacking self control and need external restraints from your family perhaps to contain the smoking when visiting home. Loss of control over the addiction is not surprising since that is a major part of the enslavement to substances. That also means that if you want you can give it up anywhere, anytime. But the better reason to give up smoking is to relate to the harmful effects of tobacco. Also the peer pressure is very great while in college and in the hostel, and it appears th...more
