Rosacea - How To Handle It?

Primarily common among middle-aged women, rosacea is a disorder which is characterized by redness and pus-filled bumps and blisters on the chin, cheeks and the forehead. As time progresses, these red bumps can get aggravated and result in other complications. It may also affect other parts of the body such as the back, neck and the chest. If the eyes are affected, then they might appear to be watery and bloodshot. It can also lead to the formation of bumps and pimples on the face.

Causes
The exact cause of rosacea has not yet been ascertained. However, certain factors have been known to act as catalysts in the development of this disorder, such as problems of the blood vessels. It may also be caused by fungus and microscopic skin mites. Though more research needs to go into it, but psychological factors are often considered to be important reasons behind this disorder. Some other risk factors of rosacea are:

  • Gender: It is more common among women
  • Complexion: People with fairer skin are at a higher risk

Symptoms
The symptoms of this disorder can vary among individuals, but they all share a few common symptoms. The major symptoms of this disorder are:

  1. Bumps and pimples: Similar to pimples, pus-filled bumps and pimples are a few common symptoms.
  2. Flushing: A flushed face or a face that appears reddish is one of the most common symptoms indicative of rosacea.
  3. Visible blood vessels: The blood vessels on the face tend to become visible.
  4. Thickening of the skin: The skin tends to thicken and enlarge, caused by the presence of excessive tissue.
  5. Stinging and burning: One may experience burning sensations and inflammation on the face.

Treatment
There are two primary methods of treatment and the required type is decided upon after a thorough diagnosis of the symptoms. They are-

  1. Medications: Topical and oral medications can be administered to treat symptoms of pimples, bumps and the reddish hue on the face. Medications help you manage the symptoms and prevent them from aggravating or resurfacing.
  2. Surgical procedures: Surgical procedures for rosacea are aimed at reducing the excessive facial redness, remedying blood vessels that are visible and correct other deformities if required.

There are certain preventive measures that you can adopt, them being:
1. Avoid direct exposure to the sun
2. Don’t overdo your exercise sessions
3. Avoid eating spicy foods
4. Take steps to minimize your stress levels

Folliculitis - How Can Ayurveda Administer It?

Folliculitis is a specialised type of acne, which is manifested with red rashes, dryness of the skin and inflammation on the hair scalp. This is a common skin issue and can be treated very well with natural medicines. Ayurveda is one natural form of medicine, which is best used to treat such skin problems. The ingredients used in Ayurveda are all very natural, organic and fresh. This means that there are hardly any side effects in this form of treatment. If you want to cure your folliculitis, with naturally occurring home remedies, then Ayurveda is the line of treatment that can be chosen. Here are some tips to help you in recovering from this skin problem.

  1. Coconut Oil: Research shows that daily use of virgin coconut oil on the infected area can reduce irritation and inflammation. This needs to be applied once daily for better results. Coconut oil contains fats, which are not only good for consumption in the dishes but also good for the skin. These fatty acids are absorbed by the skin and help in a speedy recovery.
  2. Neem: The extensive anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of neem leaves are very well known all over the world. Fresh neem leaves can be made into a paste and directly applied over the infected area. Apart from providing a soothing sensation, it also removes all the dirt from the infected area, thereby cleaning it and giving it time to heal faster.
  3. Vinegar: Vinegar has a unique property of reducing rashes and redness that develops on the skin. For instance, apple cider vinegar can be mixed with two parts of water and directly applied to the infected area for about 10 minutes.
  4. Garlic: Eating garlic clove or garlic supplements every day helps in reducing inflammation. It is said that garlic contains sulphur and other supplements, which help in reducing the inflammation that folliculitis causes. Once the inflammation is reduced, the pain subsides to quite an extent. With less discomfort in the affected region, the infection heals faster.
  5. Aloe Vera: The juice of aloe vera, when applied onto the infected area, causes the burning sensation and itching to soothe. This soothing property of aloe vera makes it an important remedy. Once the skin is cool and clean, the infection heals faster.

These are some of the naturally occurring remedies to cure folliculitis faster and to provide immediate relief to those suffering from it.

Seborrheic Dermatitis - Know The Causes & Symptoms Of It!

Seborrheic dermatitis refers to a kind of chronic skin rash affecting the scalp or face of a person. It has symptoms similar to that of eczema. Excess oil and greasiness could lead to this condition. This is a commonly noticed condition among children and adults. Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by red patches, persistent dandruff, and flaking skin. This kind of skin disorder needs immediate treatment as neglecting the upsetting signs can turn out to be fatal; you may face a neurological breakdown after suffering for days together.

Take a look at the causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis

  1. This skin disease could develop in response to psoriasis. Inflammatory responses often result in reddish patches on the skin.
  2. Malassezia could cause Seborrheic Dermatitis. Malassezia is a type of yeast present in the oil secretions of a human body.
  3. Such a condition could be worsened by the predominant weather conditions. Extreme winters or early spring can make your skin peel off.

Symptoms a person may face:

  1. The first and foremost symptom is red colored skin. The skin will appear as itchy and tender.
  2. A stinging sensation is experienced in affected areas. The pain could be serious enough to prevent you from working or resting.
  3. The eyelids of a person are at times under threat. This condition is more popularly known as blepharitis. The skin of your eyelids becomes red and crusted.
  4. Dandruff can be found on your beard and moustache and even on your eyebrows.
  5. Oily, flaky skin can be found on the scalp, ears, face, chest, armpits and also on the scrotum.

Skin disorders are taken lightly by most people. Many fail to realize how important skin is to the rest of our biological system. Skin is the primary barrier to all kinds of infections and diseases. A person should be aware of possibilities that can happen to trigger a skin condition like Seborrheic Dermatitis. Poking acne or scratching the skin of one's face, diabetes or obesity, psychological trauma, and weak immunity as noticed among patients of pancreatitis can actually increase your risk of contracting this disorder.

Acupuncture In Dermatological Conditions - How Can It Help?

Dermatological conditions refer to a range of skin disorders that may be permanent or temporary, painful or painless. Some of the conditions may be caused due to environmental changes or an underlying health issue, while others may be genetic.

Types of Skin Disorders
Here is a list of skin disorders ranging from minor to serious dermatological conditions –

• Acne – Commonly seen on the neck, face, chest, upper back and shoulders, these are characterized by breakouts of pimples, blackheads or whiteheads, nodules, and cysts. Acne usually leaves behind darkened scars on the skin.

RosaceaThis chronic skin disorder goes through cycles of relapse and fading. Symptoms include facial redness, raised bumps, sensitivity and dryness of the skin.

EczemaThese are characterized by white or yellow scaly patches that flake off. The affected areas may appear itchy, oily or greasy, and reddish.

PsoriasisThese are silvery, scaly, sharply defined patches of skin, usually located on the lower back, elbows, knees, and scalp. The condition is mostly asymptotic.

CellulitisA fungi or bacteria entering through a cut or crack in the skin leads to this urgent medical condition. The person observes swelling and redness on the skin that may ooze pus.

Contact dermatitisThe condition results from coming in contact with an allergen. Rashes and blisters appear hours or days after the contact. The skin becomes itchy, scaly, raw, and red in colour.

MelasmaThis refers to a common dermatological condition, which usually causes dark patches to appear on your face and rarely on the chest, arms, or neck.

Keratosis pilaris – This is a minor condition, causing tiny, rough bumps on the cheeks, upper arms, or thighs. They are typically white or red, and usually, do not itch or hurt.

Most of the skin disorders stated above are curable. You could turn to medications but most often, they are accompanied by side effects. Therefore, doctors and medical practitioners are now considering acupuncture therapy for the treatment of certain dermatological conditions.

Acupuncture for Dermatological Conditions-

  • For decades now, the traditional Chinese practice of acupuncture has been effective in treating a variety of ailments from internal health diseases to skin problems such as psoriasis, acne, eczema etc.
  • Ancient Chinese medicine views good health as a balance between your body’s internal systems and the surrounding environment. When the balance between the body’s vital energy or ‘chi’, blood, yang and yin is off, it leads to the development of disorders.
  • A therapist stimulates acupuncture points to increase the production of the endorphin hormones and activate your endocrine and immune systems. Acupuncture points refer to particular nerve points that provide access to the energetic meridians, which function according to its location.
  • For skin diseases, acupuncture points are situated along the torso, legs, and arms. The therapist uses fine needles to stimulate these points. He may leave the needles in for some time – usually ranging from just ten minutes to about an hour – to get the desired results. The acupuncturist may also apply heat using heated needles or small, wired alligator clips attached to the needles, to pass mild electrical charge from a battery.
  • Apart from acupuncture as an alternative therapy, long-established Chinese medicine also recommends dietary changes to get rid of various skin diseases.

How Homeopathy Helps Treat Thyroid-Related Skin Problems?

How Homeopathy Helps Treat Thyroid-Related Skin Problems?

Skin conditions related to thyroid disorders are very common. Thyroid problems arise when the level of TSH goes up or down abnormally, or when something goes wrong with the thyroid gland itself. As a result, the thyroid fails to perform its normal functions such as regulating your metabolism, body temperature, heart rate etc.

The scientific name for skin problems associated with thyroid disorder is Myxedema. Skin disorders are caused when the amount of glycosaminoglycan deposits in your skin is high. This condition is commonly known as Hypothyroidism.

Connection between Hypothyroidism and dry skin-
Hypothyroidism refers to an underactive thyroid gland. Simply put, when your thyroid gland produces insufficient hormones. Due to this condition, hyaluronic acid gets accumulated in your skin, making it dry and scaly.
Thyroid hormone receptors are found in various body parts throughout the skin matrix- skin fibroblasts, epidermal keratinocytes, sebaceous gland cells, hair follicles etc. In simple words, when thyroid hormones are secreted, the receptor sites are notified and retaliate accordingly.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism-
Apart from dry, flaky skin, other obvious signs associated with hypothyroidism are-

  1. Increased sensitivity to cold
  2. Weight gain
  3. Puffy, pale face

Epidermal changes in Hyperthyroidism-
This condition is just the opposite of hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) occurs when the thyroid gland produces excess hormones. This leads to thyrotoxicosis, which causes your skin to become inflamed and thin (like in psoriasis or eczema).

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism-
The symptoms of hyperthyroidism differ from that of hypothyroidism.

  1. Brittle nails
  2. Weight loss
  3. Bulging eyes

How Homeopathy helps treat thyroid-related skin disorders?

  1. As stated earlier, hormonal imbalance is the primary cause of thyroid disorders. Homeopathy rectifies the ‘root cause’ by controlling hormonal imbalance and thus brings about harmony. Homeopathy treats the person as a whole, and thus prevents the condition from recurring.
  2. Homeopathy treats each individual with thyroid-related skin disorders differently. It evaluates the type of skin problem you are encountering, and provides a remedy that directly addresses the condition.

Homeopathy follows a holistic approach. This means, your lifestyle and habits are also taken into account. Moreover, homeopathy medicines are prepared from 100% natural substances extracted from minerals, plant and animal bodies. So they are completely safe to use.

Skin Disorders - Why To Opt Homeopathy For It?

Skin Disorders - Why To Opt Homeopathy For It?

Skin is the most important part of the body when it comes to appearance. It also protects the internal organs from harm caused by an external source. This is why keeping your skin in pristine condition is vital for your overall well-being. However, a host of skin problems afflict people over the course of their life. While some of these are minor issues, others can be serious and even critical. Here is a look at the causes and symptoms of the most common skin conditions.

  1. Urticaria- This condition is caused as a result of an allergic reaction from certain foods and medications. In some cases, a cream or cosmetic product applied on the skin may be responsible for the disorder. This condition is also known as hives and the only symptom is the appearance of red itchy spots on the skin.
  2. Acne- Acne may be caused due to an infection or when the hair follicles in the skin become blocked. The blockage occurs when excess oil, dead skin cells and dirt get clogged in the skin. Even though acne may occur at any part of the body, they are most commonly noticed on the cheek, nose and forehead.
  3. Fungal infection- As the name of the disease suggests, this condition is caused as a result of infection from the fungus. If you have been in direct contact with fungal spores and if you inhale the same, it may affect your skin and nails. Symptoms may differ based on the strain that has caused the infection. However, the appearance of itchy red patches over the skin is one of the common symptoms of such an infection.
  4. Psoriasis- An autoimmune condition, psoriasis causes the body to produce an excessive amount of skin cells. As there is no place for these cells to accumulate, it forms a patchy layer over healthy skin. This patchy area becomes patchy and red.

Role of homeopathy against skin problems
Homeopathy is often the preferred form of treatment for those looking for a natural remedy. Even though the action of homeopathic remedies is slower than conventional medicine, they are nonetheless effective against a host of skin conditions. A range of topical creams, lotions and oral medications are present in homeopathy that can rectify all skin conditions. However, homeopathy addresses the root issue in the body and does not just treat the symptoms.

Vitiligo - Know The Diet & Lifestyle Tips To Manage It Well!

Vitiligo - Know The Diet & Lifestyle Tips To Manage It Well!

Vitiligo or Leucoderma is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin are destroyed. As a result, white patches appear on the skin in different parts of the body. Similar patches also appear on both the mucous membranes (tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose), and the retina (inner layer of the eyeball).

The hair that grows on areas affected by Vitiligo sometimes turns white. The most widely accepted view is that the depigmentation occurs because Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease - a disease in which a person's immune system reacts against the body's own organs or tissues.

Causes:

In Ayurveda, the reason behind autoimmune diseases is mostly virudh aahar sevan, that is, eating foods that are opposite in nature (such as eating fish and milk together). This results in toxin formation inside the body, which ultimately disturbs the immune system due to which the pigment-producing melanocytes cells get degenerated, causing Vitiligo.

Additionally, Vitiligo is said to be associated with certain auto-immune and inflammatory diseases such as ThyroidDiabetesPsoriasis and Pernicious Anemia. Vitiligo may also be hereditary; that is, it can run in families. Children whose parents have the disorder are more likely to develop Vitiligo.

Symptoms:

  • White patches on the skin
  • Premature graying of scalp hair
  • Loss of color inside the mouth

Ayurvedic Vitiligo Treatment:

According to Ayurveda, Vitiligo or Shwitra is caused due to the aggravation of Pitta in the body. Pitta is an Ayurvedic humor that symbolizes fire and is manifested in the skin, along with other organs. Pitta is of five types. One of them is Bhrajak Pitta, which gives coloration to the skin. In the case of Vitiligo, Bhrajak Pitta gets imbalanced, leading to the formation of ama, which consequently impairs deeper body tissues such as rasa dhatu (nutrient plasma), rakta (blood), mamsa (muscles) and lasika (lymph). This ultimately causes depigmentation of the skin.

The disease is deep-rooted and needs specific treatment that includes the right diet and specialized herbal combinations to pacify Pitta and cleanse ama from the body.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice:

  • Whole grains like porridge and whole wheat products are better than highly refined carbohydrates like pasta.
  • Adequate hydration is an important component of a healthy diet which should not be ignored.
  • Foods rich in Vitamin C such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and green tea should either be avoided or consumed in minimal quantities.
  • Avoid eating non-vegetarian foods like fish and red meats, as they may be highly antigenic and may worsen the autoimmune process. Also avoid eggs, milk, and dairy products.
  • Alcoholic and flavored drinks, ice creams, chocolates and any form of junk food is not recommended.
  • Avoid intake of sour foods like pickles, sour yogurt, and sour strawberries.
  • Neem in any form is useful. Mung dal is also good.

Skin Pigmentation - How To Avert It?

Master in Dermatology

Skin Pigmentation - How To Avert It?

Most skin problems develop due to external damage. However, skin problems may also occur due to internal problems, such as an unhealthy diet and lifestyle issues. One of the fairly common problems is skin pigmentation.

What is skin pigmentation?
Skin pigmentation primarily refers to the change in skin color in patches across the body. These could occur all over the body including your face. Skin pigmentation problems primarily include:

  • Hyperpigmentation: The darkening of the skin in specific areas
  • Hypopigmentation: The lightening or development of paler spots on the skin.

Both of these disorders are caused by anomalies in the levels of melanin (the pigment that imparts color to the skin, hair) with either overproduction or underproduction of the pigment.

Primary causes of hyperpigmentation:
Although both problems affect the skin in a multitude of ways, the excess deposition of melanin causing skin darkening is much more common than the hypo-pigmentation variety. Some of the causes of hyperpigmentation are described as follows:

  1. Sun damage: This is one of the obvious factors that will cause skin pigmentation as sun exposure causes melanocytes or melanin-producing cells within the skin to become hyperactive and thus cause dark patches.
  2. Hormonal issues: Another common issues which results in patches are hormonal changes or issues within the body such as spikes in estrogen or progesterone levels or even problems with insulin.
  3. Other factors: Diet and lifestyle are also other factors which may cause internal changes that reflect on your skin. Even using certain skin care products and using certain medications can result in skin hyperpigmentation.

Skin brightening techniques:
Some of the common skin brightening techniques that are used to deal with skin hyperpigmentation are:

  1. Chemical methods to brighten skin: Chemicals such as peels, exfoliates and other brightening products change the skin color by affecting the epidermis or the top layer of the skin. Some of these medications and products are made with retinol and tretinoin and other chemicals which push vitamin A into the skin to lighten the tone.
  2. Prevention of pigmentation: The best method to fight pigmentation is to not let it happen in the first place and sunscreen is a great way to go about it. Sun damage is by far the most common cause for pigmentation issues. Also dietary and other lifestyle changes, such as excessive alcohol consumption may cause skin pigmentation. Keep off tobacco and limit your alcohol consumption.
  3. Use of Mechanical means: Mechanical means, such as dermabrasion (cosmetically removing the skin’s superficial layers), microdermabrasion (removal of dead skin cells from the face) and lasers and other means actually skim away a thin layer of skin to allow for new skin to grow back which results in the elimination of pigmentation.

It is, however, advisable that you visit your dermatologist first and then decide on the best course of action to deal with skin pigmentation problems as well as devise a strategy to halt further skin darkening.
