Once damaged, your auditory nerve and cilia cannot be repaired. But, depending on the severity of the damage, sensorineural hearing loss has been successfully treated with hearing aids or cochlear implants. There is, however, the possibility that your hearing loss isn't reversible.

A preauricular pit is a small hole or cyst just in front of your ear above your ear canal. This hole marks a sinus tract under the skin that's in the wrong place. These tracts can vary in size. Some people have a short tract while others have a longer one with lots of branches.

Depending on the cause of your muffled hearing, it might last only a few seconds or minutes. However, some conditions may result in a recurring sense of hearing loss. If you fear that what you are experiencing will not go away on its own, then you should seek medical attention.
