Tourette's Syndrome - Let The 'Hichki' Not Be A Hitch To A Successful Career!

Let’s face it! Nothing gets us more excited than watching a character who faces several roadblocks, fights several hurdles to help underprivileged children become part of society. This movie “Hichki” is about a young woman who suffers from Tourette’s syndrome and fights against all odds to become the teacher she always knew she wanted to be.

Providing viewers with a wonderful story about the roller coaster of emotions that the protagonist goes through, the makers put the focus on Tourette’s syndrome, the stigma associated with it and the emotions of a person suffering from it goes through. While coming to terms with such a syndrome is one’s struggle, the uphill task is to get people around them to accept it!

Understanding What Is Tourette’s Syndrome

Tourette’s syndrome is attributed to involuntary and repetitive movements and sounds produced in a body. These are uncontrollable actions and at present approximately 1 million people in India suffer from this syndrome. It is neurological problem, first diagnosed by Dr. Georges Gilles De La Tourette in 1885 in a 86-year old French woman.

It is a chronic condition where symptoms can occur as early as in a 3-years old. While the most severe symptoms are presented in the teen years, most of these symptoms improve during the late teens and into adulthood.

Generally, the involuntary movements also known as tics are classified as simple and complex.

  1. Simple: As far as the basic version of this condition is concerned, you will find that it is limited to sudden and jerky movements associated with certain muscle groups. For instance, the simple tics include eye blinking, shrugging, facial grimacing, and vocalizations. The vocalization can be in form of grunting, sniffling or throat clearing where the condition is mild.

  2. Complex: The motor tics in the complex version of this condition may include head twists, violent shoulder shrugs, hops, bending, twisting or even touching objects. As far as the vocalizations go, it may include words and phrases while the dramatic symptoms may present the person using cuss words as well.

Implications and Treatment:

One positive thing associated with this syndrome is that it doesn’t cause an impairment and therefore there is no medication prescribed for it. Tourette’s syndrome does not affect one’s intelligence and hence it need not stop people from seeking a career of their choice.

However, the biggest concern of people affected by it is the social acceptance of their condition.

Also, those who are suffering from it must be provided with an ideal, tolerant and compassionate set-up where they are encouraged to work and learn to their full potential.

Further, as tic symptoms often do not cause an impairment, a majority of people suffering from it do not require any medication for tic suppression. However, effective medications are available for those whose symptoms interfere with their day-to-day functioning. Neuroleptics (drugs that may be used to treat psychotic and non-psychotic disorders) are the most consistently useful medications for tic suppression.

'Hichki' is a thought-provoking story about a young girl suffering from Tourette’s Syndrome who dreams of becoming a teacher. She faces the challenge head-on, triumphs her way into our hearts!"

Treadmill Or Outside Running - Which One Is Better?

Treadmill Or Outside Running - Which One Is Better?

Although both seem similar, treadmill and jogging are very different from each other. The same muscles are used in both the exercises and exactly same body movement is involved while performing these workouts. Both are done for cardiovascular fitness, to decrease the amount of fat in your body, and to tone your legs. However, here are a few pointers which show you the difference between treadmill and jogging:

  1. Treadmill is easy: Running on a treadmill is easier than going out for a jog. This is because a treadmill has a plain running surface with a constant environment. But when you go out for a jog, the surface may not be plain; the environment might not be constant as it can be windy or extremely sunny. The treadmill can also be adjusted according to your requirements, like the inclination or the speed of the belt can be increased or decreased. Also, it has less effects on your joints because you are able to have a flat surface to place your foot every time, unlike the rough surface of the roads and lanes when you jog.
  2. Convenience: Running a mile at home on a treadmill is much more convenient than going out for a jog. You can hop onto a treadmill for a run anytime, but going out for jog whenever you feel like, is difficult and can cause inconvenience. The weather might not be appropriate to go for a jog, or you might have certain things to do which you can while you are on the treadmill.
  3. Motivation: Treadmills allow you to see how much you have run, which will motivate you to work harder and surpass your previous limit. This is difficult when you go out for a jog as you cannot calculate how much you ran.
  4. Burning calories: Jogging outside is much more challenging than jogging on a treadmill. This is because of the various factors which you have to face like weather and terrain while you are jogging outside. This causes you to burn more calories than what you would on a treadmill. However, you can change the inclination and the speed of the treadmill which will also enable you to burn more calories.

Although jogging outside and on a treadmill might have these few differences, you will get the best results if you are able to combine both together. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Healthy Eating - A Guide On How To Eat Healthy And Stick To It!

Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it's about feeling great, having more energy, improving your health, and stabilising your mood. If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition and diet advice out there, you're not alone. It is very common that you come across an expert, advising you to avoid a certain food, and there is another one suggesting exactly the opposite of it.

What you can do

  1. Learn how your diet affects your mental as well as your physical health
  2. Set yourself up for success by making changes gradually
  3. Don't think of food as "off limits"
  4. Reduce your portion size and fill yourself up with more fruits and veggies
  5. Learn to spot hidden sugar in your food and avoid it
  6. Differentiate between healthy and unhealthy fats
  7. Find out how fiber intake can fill you and help lose weight
  8. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water

You all know that eating right can help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid certain health problems. Studies have linked eating a typical western diet filled with processed meats, packaged meals, takeout food and sugary snacks with higher rates of depression, stress, bipolar disorders, and anxiety.

Eating an unhealthy diet may even develop various mental health disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia or an increased risk of suicide in young people. What you eat should be whole, minimally processed, nutritious food, as close to its natural form as possible.

  1. Have a good heavy breakfast
  2. Have smaller frequent meals throughout the day
  3. Avoid eating late at night
  4. Cut back on sugar
  5. Moderation and not feeling stuffed is the key to a healthy diet
  6. You need a balance of proteins, fats, fibers, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to sustain a healthy body

It is not likely to be due to a weak nervous system. I feel that you may not have combined therapy with medication and so you will not completely come out of your depression because you have not developed any coping skills and techniques. It is still not too late to pursue some counseling. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Boils - How To Deal With Them?

Boils - How To Deal With Them?

A boil or a skin abscess is a type of bacterial skin infection that leads to formation of a pus-filled red bump on the skin. It usually starts in an oil gland or a hair follicle on the face, the armpits, the neck or the shoulders. If a cluster of boils appears, it is called a carbuncle and this is a more severe infection than a boil. However, most boils are caused by minor infection and can be healed with simple treatment at home. Listed below are the various ways to deal with a boil:

  1. Boils are not entirely preventable but normal daily hygiene can reduce the frequency of the occurrence of boils.
  2. When you notice a boil formation, you should apply a hot compress on it. The heat helps to prevent the formation of too much pus by helping it drain faster. When the blood circulation to the area is improved by the heat, the antibodies help to draw out the germs.
  3. The boil usually drains on its own. You may try draining it yourself but only when it is soft. Poking a hard boil can be extremely painful; it may bleed and make the infection worse. It is usually best to let it drain by itself.
  4. When the boil starts draining, you can clean the infected area with an antibacterial soap daily till the boil is drained and flattened. You may clean it with some rubbing alcohol in order to prevent the germs in the pus from spreading to other areas of the body.
  5. The infected area can be kept covered with sterile gauze coated with antibiotic ointment.
  6. Penicillin-based antibiotics can be used to treat the boil but only if it is a severe infection.
  7. 7. If the boil is excessively painful, you can use pain relievers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.
  8. Avoid sitting in one particular position for too long because this increases the pain.
  9. It is important to wash your hands every time you touch the draining boil because the bacteria is extremely contagious and can spread to other areas of your skin as well as to other people.
  10. All the articles which have been used to treat the boils like the gauze, cloth, cotton and hot compress should either be discarded or disinfected to avoid spreading of the infection.

Health Tips For Control Of Hair Fall Hair fall is experienced by most individuals in their lifetime. Most of the time hair fall goes unnoticed if the density of hair is good. Patients experience the hair fall though they are taking good diet and infact water intake is normal and even if they do not have any significant systemic disease. 1.Don't go for hair straightening and vigrous heat treatments if you are having hair fall. Its a myth that straightening would prevent hair fall. 2.Cover your hair when you are taking steam, sauana,or hot water bath 3.Treat your hair as a baby and pamper them. Do not use harsh shampoos and soap instead use a mild medicated shampoo and conditioner and infact wash your hair minimum twice in a week 4. Do not comb the hair when they are wet, let them dry a bit before you comb 5. You can oil the hair 1 hr. Before shampooing or washing, no neec to apply oil overnight. 6.Males And females have different pattern of hair loss and needs seperate consideration and treatment. 7. Wash your hair preferrably with luke warm water, avoid using hard water or underground water for washing them. 8.Hair Fall May expose some areas if your scalp, try to change combing pattern and do not tie your hair very tight. 9. Anti hair fall shampoos and serums may be applied after consultation with the dermatologist 10. With age hair starts thinning, this happens because the bodys capacity to absorb nutrients decrease. The hair needs 22 amino acids to grow. Due to lack of amino acids from the diet the hair appears thin. However you can prevent the hair fall due to aging. You need to have soya beans, lean meat, dairy products, fish, eggs and nuts. You can also have fish oil tablets or supplements which is rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Red Grape Seed sand Sprouts also are good along with Pappaya and Carrots 11. Rule out thyroid disorders, Anaemia and other major systemic issues by consulting a good dermatologist 12. Avoid high fat and high sugar diet, like gym anabolic steroids .13. Do not do crash Hair fall or loss is a multifactorial problem where hereditary along with environmental factors and diet play an important role. Iron deficiency along with essential things like biotin, vitamin A along with other nutrients have a major role to play. Serums, tablets along with specified shampoos and conditioners can also help. Most of the time, this loss is progressive and may take 4-6 months to respond to treatment. Sooner the treatment is started better are the results.
