Tips On Post Operative Care!

You probably think many more things can go wrong during a surgery as compared to after a surgery. However, you are wrong. The chances of infection after a surgery are very high and it used to be the highest cause of unsuccessful surgery in the past before it was known just how deadly an infection is. A doctor, however, cannot monitor everything afterwards. Therefore, it is crucial you know and take care after the surgery. Here are some ways in which you can do so:

  1. Keep it dry: It is crucial that you keep the incision dry for whatever period of time the doctor tells you to keep it dry as otherwise the chances of infection increase dramatically. Some of the things you should do to keep it dry is to not take a bath, scrub the incisions or put lotions on it. In fact, you should also not expose it to sunlight.
  2. Keep the incisions: You must trust your doctor as the doctor is trained and usually knows better than you. Therefore, if the doctor tells you to keep the incisions then keep them. Do not scrub, rub or put powder on them either.
  3. Check for signs of infection: This may be the easiest thing to do as there are many symptoms of an infection. These include a change in the color, size, or odor of the incision, fever, redness, hardening or heating of the surrounding area or in extreme cases more bleeding and pain than usual.
  4. Changing a dressing: This is a major cause of infections among surgery patients and the only way to prevent it is to follow the doctor's instructions to a tee. Once again, trust your doctor and remember to wash your hands and put on medical gloves. Do not put alcohol, iodine or hydrogen peroxide either.

Operating A Herniated Disc - Is It Safe?

Operating A Herniated Disc - Is It Safe?

When asked to go for surgery, be it for any problem, it can be really scary. This is pretty understandable!. If you are confronted with such a decision whether to go for surgery for your herniated disc problem, then read on to gain an understanding in this regard.

What is a herniated disc?
The bones which form our spine also known as the vertebrae are cushioned by small spongy discs. When these discs are in healthy condition, they help to keep our spine flexible by acting as a shock absorber for the spine. But whenever a disc gets damaged, it might break open or bulge. This is known as a herniated disc. It is also known as ruptured or slipped disc.

When there is a herniated disc, it does not always show any symptom, but when it presses on the roots of the nerves, it causes numbness, pain, and weakness in that area of the body where that nerve travels. The common cause for leg pain and back pain is a herniated disc in the lower back portion. It can also cause numbness down the leg and in the buttock.

Surgical treatment or non-surgical treatment – Which is better?
In case of a herniated disc, surgery works well for most but not all. In case of herniated disc surgery, patients often experience 6 to 12 weeks of severe numbness in the lower portion of the body caused due to a herniated disc, one group of people was advised to have surgery soon, and the other group of people was asked to go for the non-surgical treatment. After two months, the group of people who had surgery felt better than the non-surgical group. Surgery works best when one opts for it within 6 months after the symptoms show up.

Many people are also able to manage their symptoms by opting for non-surgical treatment as well. It includes changing the way in which they do their activities. For example, if sitting longer worsens the condition, the person is advised to stand and do his/her work. Or one can also switch between standing and sitting. Exercise is also a part of the non-surgical treatment. Aerobic exercises are beneficial to reduce the symptoms of a herniated disc. Steroid injections are also included in the non-surgical treatment.

What are the risks of surgery?
At the time of surgery, there might be a slight risk of damaging the spine or the nerves, but it is very rare. If not cared for properly, the patients have slight chances of infection in the surgical site.

To make an informed decision, discuss the options with your doctor, analyze the pros and cons of your situation and decide accordingly.

Prostate Operation: After Recovery Tips!

A prostate operation involves the removal of a part of the prostate gland or sometimes the removal of the entire prostate gland. Such a surgery is a serious one and several recovery tips must be followed by a patient to ensure quick and successful healing.

Here are some important tips for recuperating from a prostate operation:

  1. After the surgery, you need to spend up to three days in the hospital for initial recovery. You might be given fluids, which go directly into your veins until you fully recover from anesthesia.
  2. After the operation, normal urination will be disrupted in the beginning, as the urethra stays swollen. Urinating gets a little difficult and uncomfortable for a few days after the removal of the catheter.
  3. You may feel fatigued and may feel under the weather for some weeks after a prostate operation. So you must take things easy for at least two months.
  4. Avoid lifting or moving heavy objects for some weeks following the surgery. Do not perform any exercise, which causes strain. You should ask your friends and family members to carry out chores for you.
  5. After becoming slightly stable you should start gentle exercises. Walking is an effective remedy, which helps in blood circulation and lowers the risk of getting blood clots in the legs.
  6. You should drink lots of water during the recovery stage. This will reduce the risk of getting a urinary tract infection and also help in clearing any trace of blood from your urine.
  7. For improving bladder control, you should perform several pelvic floor exercises.
  8. In case of any kind of pain, you can take over the counter painkillers to ease the pain.
  9. It will take you a time span of three to six weeks for total recovery after a prostate operation. You should consult your surgeon about the best time to return to normal daily activities.
  10. You can get back to work soon, but it depends on your nature of work. Office jobs are not much of a problem, but in case of physical labour, more time is needed before you can resume your duties.
  11. Activities such as driving can be started quite soon after initial recovery. However, it varies from person to person. Some people may get back to driving within two weeks while some may need a month.
  12. You have to wait for 6 to 8 weeks after a prostate operation before getting back to sexual activities.
  13. In case you experience high fever, pain during urination or the inability to urinate, you must consult your doctor immediately.
  14. It takes a person several weeks to recover from a prostate operation completely. Initially, total rest is required. But eventually, he can return to normal activities and lead a healthy life.

Tips to Get Well From Cataract Operation

Tips to Get Well From Cataract Operation

A simple, uncomplicated cataract surgery should not take more than 10 minutes to perform. The best part about a cataract surgery is that most people see almost immediate results and improved vision. However, full recovery can take awhile. Each person heals at a different speed but ideally, your eyes should heal completely in a month.

Here are a few tips to help speed up this process and avoid infections and eye injuries:

  • Take it easy: Just because the surgery takes a short time is no reason to underestimate its importance. Do not drive on the first day and as far as possible avoid driving for the next few days as well. Do not put any extra pressure on your eyes by bending, lifting weights etc. This will ensure that your stitches do not tear open. Try to avoid excessive sneezing and coughing as this can jerk the lens out of place.
  • Protect your eyes: Wearing sunglasses is a good idea after a cataract surgery. This will protect your delicate eyes against dust, wind etc. Avoid using community swimming pools and hot tubs immediately after such a surgery to lower the risk of infections. Avoid rubbing your eyes aggressively. For the first week, keep your face out of the shower so as to avoid feeling the need to press or rub your eyes as well as to protect them from bacteria in the water.
  • Lubricate: Your eyes may feel dry and scratchy after a cataract surgery. This is normal and not something to worry about. Your doctor will prescribe eye drops to be taken after the surgery. Use these regularly. Once this is over you may need additional artificial tears or lubricating eye drops. However, do not take these drops without first consulting your doctor. If your eyes are sensitive to the preservatives in bottled eye drops, look for single use ampoules. Ensure that you always wash your hands well before administering the eye drops.
  • Keep the eye clean: Though washing your face is avoidable, you must still keep the eye clean. Use cotton and a sterile saline wash for the first few days. You can later replace the saline with cool boiled water.

If you feel any deterioration in your vision, pain or excessive discharge in the operated eye, you must immediately consult your doctor. Seeing sudden flashes of light or floaters in your vision should also not be ignored.

Adenoid Surgery: Caring For Your Child After the Operation!

Adenoid Surgery: Caring For Your Child After the Operation!

Adenoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the adenoid. The adenoid is a lymphoid tissue which is present on the roof of the mouth; its role is to produce antibodies to protect the body against infections. Usually the adenoid lymphoid tissue diminish during your adolescence and disappear by the time you are an adult. Respiratory and throat infections that are chronic in nature, are the main causes of infection in the adenoid lymphoid tissue.

Adenoidectomy can be performed, one of any mentioned techniques:

  1. Curette technique
  2. Debrider assisted adenoidectomy
  3. Coblation assisted Adenoidctomy

Reason for the removal of adenoids
Throat infections that occur frequently can lead to the enlargement of the adenoid lymphoid tissue. When these lymphoid tissue become enlarged, it results in breathing problems and blockage of the Eustachian tubes. Blocked Eustachian tubes can cause infections in the ear which, in turn, causes severe hearing problems.

The procedure
The surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient mode. The removal of the adenoid lymphoid tissue takes place through the mouth. Initially, a small instrument is put inside the mouth to keep it open. After this, the adenoids are located in the mouth, following which they are scrapped off with a curette or by applying heat to the area by the process of diathermy (a technique to stimulate circulation by heating up a part of the body with the application of localized heat currents). Once the procedure is completed, you will be discharged on the same day.

Post procedure
Post-surgery, you may experience a sore throat for a few weeks. You must drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Keeping yourself hydrated also helps relieve symptoms of post-surgical pain, if any. Oily and spicy foods should also be avoided as it may cause pain inside the mouth. Applying ice can also relieve pain symptoms. However, don’t apply ice directly wrap it in a cloth and then apply it on the neck. Do not undertake any stressful or strenuous activity for 7-10 days post-surgery to further facilitate the recovery process. Post-surgery, the risks of throat and ear infections are greatly reduced. Breathing through the nose also becomes relatively easier.
