Macular Degeneration is an age-related macular degeneration incurable eye disease, which might result in blurred vision or no vision in the centre of the vision field, which might lead to visual distortions, reduced central vision, decreased intensity of the colours and can make it difficult for the patient to recognize faces, read, drive and to perform other activities.

Types of Macular Degeneration:

1. Dry Macular Degeneration: It is characterized by the presence of drusen and thinning of macula because of a breakdown or thinning of the layer of retinal pigment epithelial cells in the macula.

2. Wet macular degeneration: In this type of AMD, there is an excessive growth of blood vessels, which causes bleeding, leakage, as well as scaring under the retina, which results in a rapid and severe loss of the central vision and might become permanent if not treated.

Causes of Age-related Macular Degeneration:

This is caused due to a problem related to the part of eye known as Macula, which is a spot at the centre of the retina of the eye. The focus point of the incoming ray of light is on Macula, which is responsible for see the things direct in front of us, especially reading and writing.

  1. Age: As the age increases, the probability of developing Age-related Macular Degeneration also increases significantly. The degree of the macular degeneration might vary person to person, but ageing is a major cause of suffering from age-related macular degeneration.
  2. Smoking: Smoking increases the chances of developing the disease in comparison to someone who does not smoke. The longer you have smoked, the more are the chances of developing it.
  3. Family History: The risk of developing the Age-related Macular Degeneration increases if it runs in your family, i.e. if your parents and siblings are suffering from it, then your chances of developing it are quite high as compared to the ones who do not have any family history.
  4. Obesity: The obese people have the higher chances of developing Age-related Macular Degeneration.
  5. Alcohol: Higher alcohol consumption also puts you at the risk of AMD, which is why one should always take alcohol in limited quantity only.
  6. Sunlight: As going out in sunlight without sunscreen is harmful to your skin, the same is harmful to your eyes for longer duration, and one should always wear UV-absorbing sunglasses to protect his eyes from AMD.
  7. Ethnicity: The white and Chinese are more prone to developing AMD as compared to the black people.
  8. Cardiovascular disease: The persons who have suffered diseases that affect the heart and other blood vessel are at higher risk of macular degeneration.

Treatment of Age-related Macular Degeneration

1. Anti-VEGF Drugs: The dry macular degeneration cannot be cured while the wet macular degeneration can be stabilized and maintained with a number of medical treatments to be injected into the eye, such as LucentisAvastin and Eylea. These are not long procedures and continued monitoring of the vision to maintain or improve the vision.

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) refers to a spectrum of eye related problems caused due to continuous excessive use of computers and LED screens. Staring at a computer screen has become a daily routine for many of us. Work and pleasure both include using a computer or a tablet. Working on computers for long periods leads to pain in eyes, strain and headache.

Why does CVS occur?

The mechanism of focus on a computer screen is far different from that of books. Books have to be focused a single time for reading. But the image on computer screen is being refreshed rapidly (40 – 60 times per second). So, the eyes have to focus and defocus every time to see a new image clearly leading to strain. Apart from this main factor, other factors contributing to CVS are:

• Uncorrected spectacle power

• In appropriate glasses

• Reduced blinking rate

• Wrong work posture

Dry eyes

• Job stress

• Age (after forties, the focusing power of eyes decrease)

What are the symptoms of CVS?

Common symptoms of CVS include eye pain, strain, headache, blurred vision (especially when changing focus from near to distance), tired eyes, redness and discomfort.

How to prevent CVS?

Following measures are advised for prevention of CVS:

Workstation ergonomics

• The top level of screen should be at eye level to prevent undue stress on neck

• Dark background behind the computer screen

• Avoid placing any light source immediately behind the computer screen

• Workstation should be placed in such a way that the user is not facing an airconditioner or cooler

• Foot rest on floor

• Maintaining proper posture during work

Tips for user

• Follow the simple rule of 20:20:20, i.e., after every 20 mins of computer work, look at distant target and blink 20 times in 20 seconds

• Regular small breaks after every 45 minutes to one hour of work if working for long hours

• Regular eye examination by ophthalmologist

Depending on where and how they develop, there are many types of cataract. The most common amongst these are:

1. Subcapsular cataract

These occur at the back of the eye lens. Diabetic patients are very susceptible to this kind of cataract.

2. Nuclear cataract

A yellowish-brown cataract that forms in the center of the lens is called nuclear cataract. This is usually seen in cataract caused by ageing.

3. Cortical cataract

Cataract in the lens cortex is known as cortical cataract. These are wedge-shaped and whitish in color. Spokes protruding out of these opaque wedges can be seen moving towards the center of the eye.

4. Congenital cataract

Though they are not common, babies can also have a cataract. Cataract formed at birth or within the first year of a baby's birth is known as congenital cataract.

5. Secondary cataract

Cataract is one of the known side effects of diabetes and glaucoma. Some steroids and medicines are also linked to cataract.

Exercises to improve eye health

There are many common measures people take to improve their eyesight or improve their vision. These include wearing glasses, lenses, sunglasses and many such measures. Here are some effective exercises which prove to be highly beneficial in increasing your eye health:

1. Stretching: This is the most common and also one of the easiest to do. It requires you to just look up, hold for two seconds, look down, hold for two seconds, then repeat this procedure for each corner of your eye, which means top-left, top-right, bottom-left and bottom-right corners.

2. Flexing: This is simply rotating your eyes in circles. Roll your eyes in the clockwise direction for one minute and then roll your eyes in the anticlockwise direction for one minute.

3. Focus switching: This particular eye exercise is used for accommodation and is probably the most useful one. In this eye exercise, you have to hold something at a reading distance and cover the other eye. You then have to find something that is at least twenty feet away and trace its shape with one eye closed. With one eye closed, trace more shapes which are twenty feet away and this may improve your eyesight.

4. Palming: This exercise is also very simple to perform. All you have to do is cover your eyes with your palms. Once you have done this, just wait and see that there are no bright flashes of light. If you see that there is a bright flash of light, just wait till they go. This is used primarily to destress the eyes.

5. Deep blinking: This is also an incredibly useful exercise for distance vision. All you have to do is to place some large letters at a fair distance and then sit on a chair. You have to then close your eyes and tighten all your muscles for 5 seconds. After the gap of 5 seconds, open your eyes and see the letters for a second or two. The more time you do this the more clearly you will be able to see the letters after reopening your eyes.

Finally, a warning has to be given that these eye treatments are not universally accepted by all doctors.

With everything requiring a computer to execute, more and more people end up looking at the computer screen for hours on end. This could range anywhere from a couple of hours to really long hours like 16 to 18. The effect of is a group of symptoms, which are collectively known as computer vision syndrome or CVS (syndrome means a collection of symptoms). The cause of this is the strain and pain resulting from constant staring at the monitor.

It is a type of repetitive stress injury, where a particular organ, the eye here, is subjected to repeated action (staring at a monitor) resulting in a group of symptoms. This is also compounded by age, where the flexibility to adjust to near and far vision is gradually reduced.

Symptoms of CVS:

There is no damage per se, but a constant strain on the eyes leads to:

  1. Blurred vision
  2. Double vision
  3. Dryness of the eyes
  4. Redness of the eyes
  5. Irritation of the eyes
  6. Headaches and neck/back aches

This could be a progressive condition, where the symptoms get worse with time. Treatment is definitely an option once the problem sets in, but this is a condition which can be definitely prevented with some simple, effective steps.

  1. Desk arrangement: Make sure the desk or monitor is slightly below eye level, about 30 inches away from the face. If you are straining the neck or the back to look at the monitor, it requires a change. The chair also can be changed in height to suit the seating. Also, prints can be pinned to the workstation when something is being typed, so constantly looking up and down while typing is avoided.
  2. Screen type: Move away from the older tube-style monitor with an LCD screen, which is easier on the eye. Check the computer settings so that brightness, contrast, and font size and shape and contrast are altered to suit your convenience. Ensure you are not requiring to strain to read.
  3. Alter the lighting: Look around you, and ensure there is adequate lighting with no glares on the monitor from surrounding windows or bright lights. A glare filter on the monitor is an effective way to manage this.
  4. Rest your eyes: Follow the 20-20-20 rule, with a 20-second break every 20 minutes where you look at something 20 feet away.
  5. Keep them moist: Blink your eyes constantly to ensure there is enough moisture. Eye drops can be used if required additionally.
  6. Frequent breaks: Not just your eyes, this also reduces strain on the neck and the back.
  7. Regular eye checkups: An annual visit, especially after 40, is a must for optimal eye health.

1. Blinking - Your eyes get strained due to long hours of sitting at the computer or television and you tend to blink less. Whenever you blink, your eyes stay in darkness for a few microseconds that help to keep the eyes fresh, while reducing eye strain.

2. Palming - This exercise involves three steps:

  • Taking a few deep breaths before beginning the exercise
  • Make yourself comfortable by resting your elbows on your knees and slowly closing your eyes
  • Cover your eyes with the cup of your palm, place your fingers on the forehead and the heel of your hand on your cheekbone
  • This exercise helps in achieving inner peace and calm and also helps in resting your mind.


3. Figure of eight - This exercise helps in strengthening the eye muscles and provides flexibility. In this exercise, you need to imagine a huge eight in front of your eyes. Slowly turn the 8 on its side. With the help of your eyes slowly trace the figure of 8. Repeat it the other way after a few minutes.

4. Near and far focusing - This exercise helps in strengthening the eye muscles and improves the vision of your eyes. It involves the following steps:

  • Either sit or stand in a comfortable position for 2-3 minutes
  • Bring your thumb about 10 inches in front of your eyes and try to focus on it
  • Now try focusing on an object that is about 10-20 feet in front of your eyes
  • Try switching between focusing on the other object and your thumb on each deep breath
