Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, as it is commonly known is a digestive disorder that is caused primarily due to intestinal distress. GERD is caused in the muscle that lies between the oesophagus and the stomach, when the acid is produced in the stomach, it starts to flow backwards.

Maintain a healthy weight
Stop smoking
Elevate the head of your bed- Wood or cement block (6-9 inches) or wedge below mattress to raise the body from the waist up. Adding a pillow is not effective.
Don t lie down after meal (for 3 hours)
Eat food slowly and chew thoroughly (put down your spoon or fork after every bite and pick it up again once you have chewed)
Avoid foods- fatty and fried food, tomato sauce, alcohol, chocolate, garlic, onion, mint, caffeine, etc
