Fiber - 5 Ways To Boost Its Intake!

The human body is designed to process foods with the help of fiber. The benefits of fibers are being recognized widely, and people are being advised to increase the fiber content in their food. On an average, our body requires 25 to 30gm of fiber per day. 

The body requires two types of fibers, soluble and insoluble. The soluble ones absorb water during digestion, contribute to stool bulk, and are believed to reduce cholesterol levels. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, oats and barley are good sources of soluble fibers.

The insoluble ones are required for good movement of food through the intestines. These are also found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains like wheatrice, barley, oats, etc. It takes a little planning to ensure your food is fibrous, but the benefits are a lot and long-lasting.

Follow some of the simple steps and you will see them for yourself:

  1. Vegetables: On a lighter note, make sure each meal of yours is as colorful as possible. Include good amount of carrots, radish, greens, legumes, tomatoes, cabbage and any other vegetable that you like in each meal. This ensures that you get all the fiber and nutrients that you want in a meal. Baked, boiled, raw choose any form, that you like.
  2. Fruits: It is advisable to eat a raw fruit as compared to having its juice. The fiber content gets reduced when you convert it to a juice. Try not to discard the peel, unless it is not edible at all, pineapple or jackfruit for example. Fruits, along with vegetables, form the most natural and best source of fiber. About 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day will get you all the fiber you need for a day that is 25 to 30gm per day. Berries, pears, prunes, figs, apples, oranges, apples, pears, mangoes, pineapples - take your pick.
  3. Whole grains: Whether you are picking up bread, noodles, cookies, or a packet of pasta, make sure they are made of whole grains and not refined flour. Include one cereal in your breakfast. Oats, barley, wheat germpowder, flax seeds can all be good sources of fiber. Replace white rice with brown rice to get more fiber.
  4. Legumes: Incorporate fiber rich legumes in your daily meal, such as beans, lentils, peas or puree them for interesting dips. Adding legumes help you with the required amount of fiber intake for your body along with regular and smooth bowel movements.
  5. Water: Though not a direct contributor to fiber, increasing the water intake makes the fiber from the above mentioned foods more effective. It promotes better food passage through the intestines and contributes to better stool. It also reduces the bloated feeling that you get with increased fiber. 

Try to gradually make these small changes to your diet and you will see the benefits almost immediately. Try including more fibrous foods to also prolong your hunger pangs, breakfast being the best way to start.

Not everyone can conceive a baby easily. The inability to conceive a baby despite having intercourse during the fertile window in a woman’s menstrual cycle for over a year is termed as infertility. When it comes to women, FSH stimulates the ovarian follicles into releasing an egg without which it would be impossible to conceive a child.
  3. Fight stressOne of the effects of stress is reduced libido. Prolonged exposure to stress is often a major factor that contributes to infertility. When it comes to women, stress makes a woman ovulate less regularly. In men, stress can affect the sperm production and affect testosterone levels. To fight stress, try deep breathing exercises like alom vilom or keep a little time aside each morning for a walk or light exercise.
  4. LodhraThis herb is very beneficial in treating women with infertility. It stimulates FSH and luteinising hormones (LH) and lowers the risk of a miscarriage. It also increases chances of conception. Lodhra should be taken twice a day along with honey and milk.
  5. Satavari: It is also a very effective herb for treating woman infertility.
  6. Vasaka: It also playes a vital role in treating infertility among women.
  7. Lifestyle changes: Ayurveda is not only about herbal medicines but also following the right lifestyle. Water intake is a must in winters too. Like summers we don't feel thirsty. Symptoms of dehydration in winters are having dry mouth, dry eyes, cracking of lips, low blood pressure, excessive weakness and lethargy (this leads in poping up multivitamin pills).

With the third trimester (from the 7th month to the time of delivery) of pregnancy, you move a step closer to welcoming the happiness that you have long been waiting for, braving so many complications and pregnancy woes. While all the trimesters are crucial, stepping into the third trimester, a pregnant woman needs to be extra careful. Be it her diet, medications, or health check-ups, proper care and precautionary measures should be followed to ensure both the mother and baby stay healthy and disease-free.

Health check-ups: No matter how healthy you or the baby are, do not skip even a single health checkup or doctor's appointment. Incidences of Gestational Diabetes, Preeclampsia, Anemia, can be observed in many pregnant women during the later stages of pregnancy, which, if left unattended can complicate the pregnancy. Thus, any uneasiness or discomfort, no matter how small, should be brought to the notice of your attending physician. When it comes to the well being of the baby, taking chances is just not an option.

Rest, sleep and relax: With all the hormonal changes and the growth and development of the fetus, body aches, fatigue (physical as well as mental), and tiredness are inevitable, especially during the third trimester. Stay happy and relaxed as much as you can. While a sound sleep and proper rest are vital, listening to soft and soothing music or meditation can work wonders to keep you relaxed, thereby uplifting your mood.
Try and avoid climbing too many stairs during this stage. Avoid bending too much or doing strenuous and physically and mentally exhausting work (household chores or professional commitments).

Exercise: Many pregnant women in their third trimester have benefited immensely from exercise (specially designed for the third trimester) and physical activities. However, what works for one may not produce similar results for another. Exercise only when you are physically and mentally up for it and most importantly when you are advised by a physician.

Dietary Requirements: The nutritional requirements change with each trimester and so does the diet. Proteins, vitamins, calcium, iron, folic acid, DHA or omega-3 fatty acids are all essential for the overall development of the baby.

Enrich your diet with avocados, kiwi, melon, strawberry, nuts, seeds, wholemeal toast, bacon (lean), salmon, Brussels sprouts, lean beef, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, eggs, pork, milk and dairy products during the third trimester.

Processed and fast foods, raw papaya, uncooked or raw vegetables and meat, aloe vera, fenugreek, pineapple, unpasteurized milk, can, however, trigger complications and are best left avoided during the third trimester.

Overeating just because you are carrying a life within does not make any sense. Instead, it can trigger heartburn and acidity. Having small meals at regular time intervals will be more beneficial. To deal with heartburns, one should also avoid retiring to bed immediately after a meal. Increased intake of dietary fibres goes a long way to prevent constipation (common during the third trimester).

A Keloid is an extensive hard growth of a fibrous tissue (also called as scar tissue), which is formed when your body attempts to heal an injured skin even when it is already healed. It is actually a thick skin or tissue generated due to excessive production of collagen of Type - I in the dermis of humans. Normally, such fibrous tissue is formed in a controlled manner, when the skin is injured and needs repair. When it is produced in more quantity than actually required, it takes the form of a keloid.

The shape of the keloids is irregular and may float around the wound itself. The size of a keloid could be more than that of the original injury or wound. You will be able to see keloids mostly on the shoulders, chest, earlobes, and cheeks. But those are not specific to these body parts and could occur at any part of the body with an injury. However, it is noticed that keloids are least likely to appear on the face of its patients.

The keloids do not impose any kind of harm to your health. However, those are the cosmetic concerns for almost all its patients. The only difference between the normal scars and keloids is that the keloids do not regress on their own, as the normal scars do.

Symptoms
Since the keloids are the result of the overgrowth of fibrous tissues, their symptoms arise at the skin position of some prior injury. Following are the general symptoms of keloids:

-  Turning of the normal skin colour to flesh-coloured, either pink or red

-  Slightly up-raising of some area on or near to the previously injured skin

-  Slight and continual growth of the skin area of prior injury over the period of time

-  Itching in the skin area of prior injury

Note that the keloids could spread over a larger area than the initial wound area over the skin. Those may continually grow further over several weeks or even months.

Generally, keloids do not cause any severe harm to your skin, other than the itchy temptation. Rest than that, you would be experiencing uneasiness, sensitivity, or irritation, when those keloids are rubbed with the clothes that you would be wearing. In some rare cases when keloids spread over larger areas of the body, the hard-fibrous tissues may impact your normal and usual routine tasks.

In fact, keloids do not impose any health issues by their own, its patients may feel a little awkward or conscious, when those are larger in a well visible area, like on the wrist or face. When exposed to the sunlight, keloids tend to tan or darken as compared to its surrounding skin, which at times makes its patient feel a bit awkward in going public.

Additionally, children and people with older age are less likely to have keloids on their skin as compared to those in the years of their young age. It is recommended to the patients of keloids to keep those covered in the sunlight to avoid discolouring.

Causes
The primary breed places for a keloid are various types of skin injuries, such as:

-  Burn

-  Acne Scar

-  Chickenpox wounds

-  Scratch

-  Ear piercing

-  Surgical areas

-  Vaccination spots

As per the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, around 10% of global individuals suffer a keloid at some point of time in their life. Both the males and females are equally prone to have keloids on their skin injuries. However, the individuals with a little dark or yellowish skin (like those African-Americans), are more likely to have a keloid on their skin. They have the tendency of up to 15 times of developing the keloids on their skin as compared to those with fairer skin.

Some other factors with which individuals are more likely to get the keloids on their body include being:

-   An Asian origin

-  A Latino origin

-  Pregnant women

-   Individuals with age below 30

Keloids are also associated with the hereditary inheritance. It means that those individuals whose either one or both parents have ever faced this problem are more orient to have keloids. Based on the studies and researches, the AHNAK gene plays a crucial role in assessing the probability of developing keloids in the individuals. It means that those individuals who have AHNAK as part of their gene system are more prone to get the keloids on their skin injuries over the others. So, it is recommended that such people should prevent themselves from getting unnecessary piercing, surgery or tattoo on their body.

Note: It is very rare to see patients have both keloids and psoriasis at the same time.

Prevention
There are certain measures that you must take care after getting an injury over your skin to prevent the formation of keloids. Those include:

-  Take complete care of the wound in order to get it healed at the earliest. You may use the silicone gel pressure pads on the area impacted by injury for a quick recovery and avoiding the chances of getting keloids.

-  Consume food rich in vitamin E and minerals in good quantity when you have any kind of skin injury. This would ensure faster healing of the wound.
