Kidney Stones - Can Ayurveda Tackle Them?

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that focuses on improving your overall well-being, rather than just focusing on the symptoms of the disease. Being a complete natural based method, it has no side effects. Ayurvedic remedies for kidney stones emphasize on improving your lifestyle and diet to keep the energy balance in your body.

The causes of kidney stones range from factors such as an imbalanced diet, sedentary lifestyle and spicy food. Less water consumption is also a major cause of kidney stones. These factors cause problems in the various doshas in the human body, leading to diseases. It leads to toxin formation in the body called ama. These toxins trickle down to the urinary tract, causing crystals to form, thus leading to kidney stones.

Ayurvedic remedies consist of using diuretic herbs to dissolve the stones. Once the stones are dissolved, it is then recommended to use various cleansing techniques such as Panchakarma, which helps in strengthening the body. It is recommended to drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water daily and urinate whenever the urge occurs.

If the bladder stores the urine for a long time, then it leads to kidney stones. You need to cut down on foods that contain salt in excess. Add more green vegetables to your diet as they provide the body with essential nutrients such as calcium.

A comprehensive list of the changes you should make are:

1. Avoid eating dry and heavy foods
2. Limit consumption of coffee, tea, pickle based foods and cold drinks
3. Restrict consumption of non-vegetarian foods such as meat and poultry
4. Drink adequate water regularly
5. Consume parboiled rice, brown rice and ginger
6. Consume lots of fruit juices, soup and water
7. Increase water consumption during the summer months
8. Don’t suppress the urge to urinate

Some herbal remedies to control kidney stones are combining “mehendi” with water to form a decoction and then consuming it. Increase consumption of horse-gram as it decreases risk of kidney stones. Make sure you exercise on a regular basis as it improves your overall well-being and keeps you healthy.

Sciatica - Panchakarma Therapy To Heal It!

The pain in the lower extremity of the body caused by the irritation of the sciatic nerve (the large nerve running down from the lower back of the body to each one of the legs) is referred to as Sciatica. Sciatica is caused by injury, inflammation or compression of the sciatic nerve and causes pain or numbness spreading to leg, buttocks, and hips. In Ayurveda, Sciatica is known by the name of Gradhrasi. It is believed to be aggravated by the imbalance of Vata Dosha.

Causes -

Sciatica can be caused by strenuous physical activity such as heavy weight lifting, or to exposure to extreme cold. Pressure on buttocks due to sitting or lying continuously for long hours, injury due to a fractured pelvis or trauma to thighs also damages the sciatic nerve.

Symptoms -

Pain in the back and the lower extremity of the body is the primary symptom of Sciatica. Also, there is a burning or tingling sensation in the affected area. It can also become numb. One may even find it difficult to walk. In severe cases, it becomes impossible to bend the knee or move the foot.

Treatment Through Ayurveda -

Through Ayurveda, Sciatica can be treated internally and externally by balancing the energies involved in the doshas:

  • Internal methods of treatment: Yogaraja Guggulu is the herbal pill consisting of Guggulu resin, twenty-five types of herbs and ghee effectively treats all types of pain associated with the nervous system. Dashamula Arishta, an elixir having sixty-three herbs, jaggery, plums, honey, and water has anti-inflammatory properties which help in toning up the affected nerve.

  • External methods of treatment: Application of Sarshapadi medicinal oil (made up of camphor, mustard oil, and vegetable turpentine as a base) on the affected area helps in relieving pain.

Panchakarma therapies are very effective in the treatment of this condition. They aim to relieve inflammation and release nerve compressions and spasms for strengthening the entire spine and the surrounding tissue. Generally, treatment through the Panchkarma therapies takes four to five weeks depending upon the severity of the condition. Following are some of the processes involved in treatment through Panchakarma:

  • Kativasti and Elakizi, Naranga Kizhi, Navarakizhi are very important in the treatment of sciatica.

  • Sarwang Abhyang is the full body massage with medicated warm oils for lubricating and nurturing the body for the pacification of Vayu.

  • Swedana refers to steaming the body for detoxification.

  • Vasti refers to the administration of medicated oils and decoction through anal route for treating the vatic disorder that is Sciatica as per Ayurveda. It pacifies dryness and strengthens intestines and is one of the permanent cures for most of the vatic disorders.

  • Siravedha is the venous puncture or venesection.

  • Agnikarma is the Cauterisation or burning the affected part.

  • Raktamokshan is the process for Blood purification.

Take Away-

Sciatica refers to the pain in the lower body due to an irritated sciatic nerve, caused due to nerve compression or trauma or injury. Through Ayurveda, Sciatica can be treated through internal or external methods as well as through Panchakarma therapies.

Obesity - How Can Ayurveda Subdue It?

Obesity - How Can Ayurveda Subdue It?

It is a wrong notion that only overeating makes a person obese. Many people are overweight even after eating within limits or restricting the intake of unhealthy foods. A person is often considered obese when their BMI or Body Mass Index is 30 or more. For a person to be severely obese (Morbid obesity), the BMI should be 40 or higher. From backaches to heart ailments, obesity, of late, has become a serious threat, which if not controlled or treated can trigger a myriad of health problems.

Complications associated with obesity

In addition to the physical discomfort, obesity can trigger several complications some of which include -

  1. Obesity increases the risk of Type-2 Diabetes (a condition where the cells of the body fail to utilize the insulin produced by the pancreas resulting in an elevated blood sugar level, also known as Insulin Resistance) by many folds.
  2. There is a direct relationship between obesity and heart problems including a stroke and heart attack (myocardial infarction).
  3. In some cases, obesity can give rise to a complication whereby the affected individual is found to suffer from three health conditions namely high blood pressure, high blood glucose, high levels of triglycerides with a dip in the level of the good cholesterol or HDL (a condition termed as a Metabolic syndrome).
  4. The incidences of psychological stress, anxiety, and depressions, sexual disorders (low libido, erectile dysfunction), menstrual problems, infertility, sleep apnea, cancer (pancreas, breast, kidney, uterus, esophagus, prostate, colon, gallbladder, ovary, liver), are also relatively higher in obese people.

Ayurvedic approach to treat obesity

With a holistic and comprehensive approach, Ayurveda plays a pivotal role in treating obesity and associated health complications.

  1. According to Ayurveda, there are seven vital tissues or Dhatus in our body- Rasa Dhatu (the useful and nutritious part of the food being digested), Rakta Dhatu (blood), Mamsa Dhatu (muscle), Meda Dhatu (fat), Asthi Dhatu (bone), Majja Dhatu (bone marrow), Shukra Dhatu (reproductive system including the sperm and ovum)
  2. In obesity, the conversion of Meda Dhatu to Asthi Dhatu does not take place. There is also a disruption of the balance between the three doshas (vitiation of the Vata dosha with an elevation in the Kapha Dosha)
  3. Thus, the treatment aims at treating the diseased condition through the restoration of the balance between the doshas and eliminating the toxins from the body
  4. Kashaya Basti, part of Panchakarma therapy where an enema (medicated decoction) is used to carry out the detoxification can work wonders to restore the dosha balance
  5. The Vamana therapy is equally effective where the toxins are eliminated using an Ayurvedic emetic herb (induces vomiting)
  6. Further, the various body massages using herbal and medicated oils goes a long way in flushing out the toxins
  7. The diet also undergoes a modification. Fruits, vegetables, foods rich in good fats need to be consumed more while spicy and oily foods or those rich in bad fats (pastries, doughnuts, cookies, margarine, ice creams), are to be avoided
  8. Yoga and meditation are equally helpful
  9. One needs to have a sound sleep for at least 6-8 hours daily

Panchakarma Therapy - Know How Can It Help In Joint Pain!

Panchakarma Therapy - Know How Can It Help In Joint Pain!

Joint pain is considered to be one of the first few signs of ageing. According to the science of Ayurveda, joint pain is triggered mainly by an accumulation of toxins in the body. These toxins can create an imbalance in the doshas which in turn can cause pain and inflammation on the joints. Along with joint pain, a person is likely to experience a loss of flexibility, weakness, tenderness and enlargement of the joints.

Unlike some popular forms of medication that focus on relieving the pain, Ayurveda addresses the root cause of the issue. Panchkarma aims at cleansing the body of toxins and clearing blockages in the body’s digestive and circulatory system. This helps the Vata dosha flow easily through the body and reduces pain associated with arthritis etc. Panchakarma can be defined as a collection of five ayurvedic techniques. These are:

  1. Vamana (Emesis): The oral drug administered induces emesis and eliminates the vitiated and morbid doshas from the stomach.

  2. Virechana (Purgation): Here the oral drug administered induces purgation and purifies the alimentary canal.

  3. Anuvasana Vasthi: Medicated oil is administered in the required dose through the anal canal.

  4. Nirooh Vasthi: Mixtures of medicines is to be applied as enema in which decoction is a major ingredient which expels the vitiated doshas and cleans the intestines. Vasti aims at removing toxins and waste products from the body through the colon. In doing this, it cleanses the digestive channels and improves circulation of air or the Vata dosha in the body. With better circulation, joint pain is effectively reduced. An enema also nourishes the body and gives it the strength to rebuild tissues while boosting the immune system.

  5. Nasya: Medicines as liquids(decoction, oil, etc) or powder (Choornnas) expel the vitiated doshas from nasal cavity and then pacifies the doshas of head.

Pre - Panchkarma Measures includes Snehana (oleation) & Swedna (Sudation). These various preparatory measures are :

a) Abhyanga or Full Body Massage: This technique helps in the removal of toxins from deep tissues within the body. It pacifies the Vata and nourishes the body while simultaneously reducing stress and enabling better quality sleep. A full body massage also helps calm the body both physically and mentally.

b) Potli or Poultice Massage: As the name suggests, a potli involves massaging the body with medicated herbs tied together in a tiny bundle that has been warmed with medicated oils. This potli is then used to massage the entire body. This technique helps relax the muscles of the body and soothes the aggravated Vata dosha. It is very effective when it comes to providing relief from joint pains caused by arthritis, spondylitis, muscle cramps, etc.

c) Pizhichil or Rich Oil Massage: A rich oil massage involves subjecting the body to streams of lukewarm oil that has medicinal properties while simultaneously softly massaging the body. This type of massage helps relieve tension and stress and is a very effective remedy against joint pains. It is highly recommended in the case of rheumatic diseases.

d) Svedana or Steam Bath: A steam bath helps cleanse the body both physically and mentally by aiding in the removal of toxins through sweat and calming the mind. It also helps soften the muscles and tissues and dilates the channels in the body.

Memory - Know Ayurvedic Remedies For It!

If you're suffering from weak memory or memory loss, Ayurveda might be able to solve your problems. Ayurveda uses natural remedies to cure many diseases, and even though forgetting where you put your glasses or cell phones may not sound discrete enough, it may be early signs of dementia. Before it escalates to that level, here are 5 foods that you may try to curb it as the first signs appear.

* Ayurvedic herbs, like rosemary, brahmi, ashwagandha, shankha pushpin, liquorice plant, etc, are all known to have medicinal properties that improve your brain power. Regulated incorporation of these herbs in your diet in requisite amount relaxes your mind, and thereby improves its functioning capacity.
