The pain in the lower extremity of the body caused by the irritation of the sciatic nerve (the large nerve running down from the lower back of the body to each one of the legs) is referred to as Sciatica. Sciatica is caused by injury, inflammation or compression of the sciatic nerve and causes pain or numbness spreading to leg, buttocks, and hips. In Ayurveda, Sciatica is known by the name of Gradhrasi. It is believed to be aggravated by the imbalance of Vata Dosha.
Sciatica can be caused by strenuous physical activity such as heavy weight lifting, or to exposure to extreme cold. Pressure on buttocks due to sitting or lying continuously for long hours, injury due to a fractured pelvis or trauma to thighs also damages the sciatic nerve.
Pain in the back and the lower extremity of the body is the primary symptom of Sciatica. Also, there is a burning or tingling sensation in the affected area. It can also become numb. One may even find it difficult to walk. In severe cases, it becomes impossible to bend the knee or move the foot.
Treatment Through Ayurveda -

Internal methods of treatment: Yogaraja Guggulu is the herbal pill consisting of Guggulu resin, twenty-five types of herbs and ghee effectively treats all types of pain associated with the nervous system. Dashamula Arishta, an elixir having sixty-three herbs, jaggery, plums, honey, and water has anti-inflammatory properties which help in toning up the affected nerve.
Panchakarma therapies are very effective in the treatment of this condition. They aim to relieve inflammation and release nerve compressions and spasms for strengthening the entire spine and the surrounding tissue. Generally, treatment through the Panchkarma therapies takes four to five weeks depending upon the severity of the condition. Kativasti and Elakizi, Naranga Kizhi, Navarakizhi are very important in the treatment of sciatica.
Sarwang Abhyang is the full body massage with medicated warm oils for lubricating and nurturing the body for the pacification of Vayu.
Swedana refers to steaming the body for detoxification.
Vasti refers to the administration of medicated oils and decoction through anal route for treating the vatic disorder that is Sciatica as per Ayurveda. It pacifies dryness and strengthens intestines and is one of the permanent cures for most of the vatic disorders.
Siravedha is the venous puncture or venesection.
Agnikarma is the Cauterisation or burning the affected part.
Raktamokshan is the process for Blood purification.
Sciatica refers to the pain in the lower body due to an irritated sciatic nerve, caused due to nerve compression or trauma or injury. Through Ayurveda, Sciatica can be treated through internal or external methods as well as through Panchakarma therapies.
Sinusitis, also known as a sinus infection, is defined as an inflammation of the mucous membrane that lines the paranasal sinuses. Sinusitis can be caused by infection, allergies, air pollution, or structural problems in the nose.
Signs & Symptoms:
Headache/facial pain or pressure of a dull, constant, or aching sort over the affected sinuses is common with both acute and chronic stages of sinusitis. This pain is typically localized to the involved sinus and may worsen when the affected person bends over or when lying down. Pain often starts on one side of the head and progresses to both sides.
Acute sinusitis may be accompanied by thick nasal discharge that is usually green in color and may contain pus (purulent) and/or blood.
Often a localized headache or toothache is present.
Fever may be accompanied.
Halitosis (bad breath) may be there in certain cases.
Poor sense of smell in certain cases or there may be complete loss of smell.
According to Ayurveda ,the disesase has kapha vata dosha dominance.The treatment principle incorporates increasing the immunity of the paient and treat the underying pathology with medicines and panchakarma.
Avoid the cause ie dust,allergens,sour and cold food items,damp conditions.
Oral medicines to balance the aggravated doshas.
Panchakarma procedures-Primarily nasyam has wonderful role in treating the disease. Nasyam is a process wherein herbal oils and medicated ghrits are administered in the nostrils. Since nose is the gateway to the head, it is believed that this therapy is highly effective in curing a number of diseases related to the head. The therapy cleanses and opens the channels of the head, thereby improving the process of oxygenation which has a direct influence on the functioning of the brain. In this process, the imbalanced doshas are removed through the nasal openings.In certain cases vamana and basti karma are also given.
Rasayana for improving the immunity of the patient so that the disease doesn’t reccur.
All these procedures act in totality and in maximum cases patient gets good relief and can maintain themselves without medicine after the course.
Some Home Remedies:
Roast one teaspoon cumin seeds and crush them. Add one tablespoon honey to it and mix well. Consume this every day.
Add one teaspoon fenugreek seeds in four cups of water. Boil the mixture till the water level reduces to half. Strain the liquid. Drink four cups of this liquid every day. This helps in relieving fever and eliminating toxins.
Boil one glass of water with 8-10 basil leaves, 8-10 crushed powder of pepper, 15-20 grams of sugar candy, small piece of crushed ginger. Boil this till it reduces to half. Strain the mixture through a sieve and consume this warm two times a day.

Anuvasana Vasthi: Medicated oil is administered in the required dose through the anal canal.
Nirooh Vasthi: Mixtures of medicines is to be applied as enema in which decoction is a major ingredient which expels the vitiated doshas and cleans the intestines. Vasti aims at removing toxins and waste products from the body through the colon. In doing this, it cleanses the digestive channels and improves circulation of air or the Vata dosha in the body. With better circulation, joint pain is effectively reduced. An enema also nourishes the body and gives it the strength to rebuild tissues while boosting the immune system.
Nasya: Medicines as liquids(decoction, oil,etc) or powder (Choornnas) expel the vitiated doshas from nasal cavity and then pacifies the doshas of head.
Pre - Panchkarma Measures includes Snehana (oleation) & Swedna (Sudation). These various preparatory measures are :
a) Abhyanga or Full Body Massage: This technique helps in the removal of toxins from deep tissues within the body. It pacifies the Vata and nourishes the body while simultaneously reducing stress and enabling better quality sleep. A full body massage also helps calm the body both physically and mentally.
b) Potli or Poultice Massage: As the name suggests, a potli involves massaging the body with medicated herbs tied together in a tiny bundle that has been warmed with medicated oils. This potli is then used to massage the entire body. This technique helps relax the muscles of the body and soothes the aggravated Vata dosha. It is very effective when it comes to providing relief from joint pains caused by arthritis, spondylitis, muscle cramps, etc.
c) Pizhichil or Rich Oil Massage: A rich oil massage involves subjecting the body to streams of lukewarm oil that has medicinal properties while simultaneously softly massaging the body. This type of massage helps relieve tension and stress and is a very effective remedy against joint pains. It is highly recommended in the case of rheumatic diseases.
d) Svedana or Steam Bath: A steam bath helps cleanse the body both physically and mentally by aiding in the removal of toxins through sweat and calming the mind. It also helps soften the muscles and tissues and dilates the channels in the body.
