Osteoporosis is a condition wherein the rate at which new bones form cannot match up to the worn out bones, thus making the bones fragile. Osteoporosis mainly affects the wrist, hip or spine and can result in a stooped posture accompanied by height shrinkage and back pain caused due to a collapsed vertebra. 

Reasons Behind Osteoporosis Hormones: 
Lowered estrogen level in women and testosterone in men as a result of ageing or other treatments can result in this condition. Menopause is a condition that marks the end of the menstrual cycle. It is a normal phenomenon that women experience with age. Menopause affects the bone health adversely. Bone health is directly tied to oestrogen, the hormone responsible for reproductive cycles, pain sensitivity. As a woman moves out of her fertile years there is an internal change in the reproductive system and the consequences can be seen and felt all over the body, including the bones.

The years just preceding menopause, with their hormonal fluctuations can set the stage for later health issues like bone weakening. As the oestrogen level drops, the bone density starts to decline which continues for a long period of time. The bone loss can become significant during perimenopause (the decades making up to menopause) and will speed up in the first few years of menopause.

The oestrogen level directly affects the process known as bone remodelling; the constant breakdown and the remodelling of the bone in the skeleton. With less oestrogen in the body cells called osteoclasts are able to absorb bone at a faster rate than osteoblasts (bone-building cells) are able to regenerate new bone. Thus the bone remodelling equation is no longer equal and the bone density continues to decline.

The osteoporosis risk after menopause is a serious one, yet so many women refuse to pay it much attention. Perhaps it’s because the bone damage isn’t visible, or that bone loss continues so gradually for so many years. While the bone loss cannot be completely halted, there is plenty that can be done to slow it down. Here are some ways to take care of your bone health before or after menopause.

  1. Stay active: Adopting an active lifestyle after menopause helps in protecting the bones. It's recommended that adults between 19 to 64 years of age should do moderate to intense activity. This could include activities such as cycling or brisk walking. Sitting for long hours should be avoided. Weight-bearing exercises and resistance exercises are particularly important for improving bone strength and helping to prevent osteoporosis.
  2. A balanced healthy diet: A healthy, balanced diet that includes calcium and vitamin D will help maintain healthy bones after the menopause. Good sources of calcium include green, leafy vegetables (but not spinach), nuts, seeds, dried fruit, tinned fish with the bones in, and dairy products like milk, yoghurt and cheese. Good food sources of vitamin D include oily fish, eggs, and fat spreads or breakfast cereals
  3. Hormone replacement therapy: HRT can be an effective treatment for common menopausal symptoms like night sweats, sleep disturbance and achy joints. It works by replacing oestrogen, which naturally begins to lower post menopause. HRT can also help to maintain bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which a person experiences bone mass or bone density deterioration to a significant degree. Now, despite the fact that an erect penis is commonly referred to as a "boner," there are in fact no bones in the penis, so osteoporosis should not be considered a penis health issue. But that doesn't necessarily mean the reverse is true - that an erect penis problem should be ruled out as an indicator of a bone health issue. In fact, some studies suggest just the opposite.

About osteoporosis

When a person experiences deterioration in their bones, they are said to have "low bone mass." This occurs when the body either loses too much existing bone, makes too little new bone, or a combination of both. When the loss reaches a certain point, a person is said to have osteopenia; when it reaches a further point, the diagnosis becomes osteoporosis.

If a person were to look at a bone under a microscope, they would see that healthy bones have a "honeycomb" structure to them. When they have low bone mass, the holes in the honeycombs become much, much larger. This weakens the bone, making it much more likely to fracture or break when put under undue stress. In severe cases, even "regular" stress may result in bone damage.

Some 54,000,000 Americans have low bone mass, and although it is thought of as a woman's disease, that is not at all the case. An estimated 25% of all men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is expensive, ringing up costs of about $19 billion every year - and that cost is expected to climb precipitously.

The erect penis connection

So if the penis is essentially boneless, why should there be some connection between osteoporosis and a guy's manhood?

A Taiwan study from 2016 looked at this issue. It examined more than 4400 men who were 40 years of age or older who experienced erect penis issues. It matched them with more than 17,000 men who did not report bouts of erectile dysfunction.

It then looked to see how many people in each group developed osteoporosis. According to this study, almost 6% of the men with erect penis problems went on to develop osteoporosis. Among the men without erectile dysfunction, there was still osteoporosis - but only about 3.7%. When they looked at the number of years in which there were osteoporosis incidents, the men in the former group were three times as likely to suffer as the men in the control group.

Why?

The scope of this study did not allow the researchers to determine why men with erect penis issues are more at risk of osteoporosis than those without. However, one theory the scientists put forth is that men with erect penis issues often have lower than normal testosterone levels. Testosterone is associated with erectile function in general. Lower testosterone is also associated with bone mass issues. In addition, men with erectile issues often have lower levels of vitamin D, which is associated with increased bone health.

Men with erectile dysfunction may want to consult with a doctor to determine if they need to be doing anything to help ward off osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis and the link to an erect penis emphasize again the wisdom of maintaining overall penis health. Osteoporosis is an age related condition characterized by low bone density and fragile bones. Lack of calcium and vitamin D are the most common triggers of this condition. These are vital elements for healthy teeth as well. Osteoporosis has a direct relationship with oral health and can trigger a number of issues such as loss of teeth and gum and periodontal disease. The effects of osteoporosis on oral health are seen more in women than in men. 

This risk increases when talking about menopausal women. 

The jawbone is one of the areas which bear the brunt of osteoporosis. The loss of bone density in this area can make teeth loose and cause tooth loss. It can also affect the gum ridges that hold dentures in their place. This can result in ill fitting dentures that need to be frequently changed. 

Medication for osteoporosis is also linked to dental health. In rare cases, antiresorptive medicines that are prescribed to strengthen the bones can lead to a condition known as osteonecrosis. This refers to the death of a bone due to poor blood supply. Antiresorptive medication can be administered orally or intravenously with the latter having a higher risk of triggering osteonecrosis. Though it affects the hips and shoulder bones in most cases, it can also affect the jaw bone. It is marked by pain, swelling, infection and exposed bone. Loose teeth, gum infections and numbness or heaviness of the jaw are also symptoms of osteonecrosis of the jaw bone. 

 The risk of suffering from osteonecrosis cannot be determined beforehand. Hence it is a good idea to see your dentist before or just after starting antiresorptive treatment for osteoporosis and to schedule regular checkups for the duration of your treatment. Dental problems if any should be treated before starting medication for osteoporosis. Osteonecrosis of the jaw bone is most commonly seen after undergoing a dental procedure that affects the jawbone and associated tissues such as a tooth extraction. Ideally, invasive dental procedures should be avoided if you are taking antiresoptive medicines. However, it can also occur spontaneously. 

Biophosphonates are also commonly prescribed to treat osteoporosis. This type of medication slows down the breakdown of bone tissue. However, this can lead to the development of new bones. This is not a troublesome issue when it comes to bones like the hip, leg or arm bones but can be very disruptive if it affects the jawbone. This is because the jaw bone is constantly reforming and reshaping itself.

Osteoporosis is a disease where decreased bone strength increases the risk of a broken bone. It is the most common reason for a broken bone among people who are old. Bones that commonly break include the back bones, the bones of the forearm, and the hip. Until a broken bone occurs there are typically no symptoms. Three important factors to keep your bones healthy are:

1.Adequate amounts of calcium intake

2.Adequate amounts of Vitamin D
