What are the alternatives to the treatment?

What is the Nosebleed Treatment?

Nose bleeding is quite common and by itself is not a major problem. However, the bleeding can be indicative of other underlying issues in the body. There can be several kinds of nose bleeding, generally classified as mild, moderate or severe. While most mild nose bleeds do not require any medical treatment, moderate and severe cases may require a trip to the hospital.

Mild nose bleeds can be treated at home by simply applying pressure on the nose for around 10 to 20 minutes. However, if the bleeding persists, or if the bleeding recurs within a 24 hour period, it may be indicative of an underlying issue. If the blood flows down the throat as well, the condition is known as severe nose bleeding.

In most cases, the nose bleeding is simply a symptom of an underlying physical condition. There can be several causes for the nose bleed and some of the most common include a broken nose, common cold overview, deviated septum and allergic rhinitis.

The treatment for the nose bleeding will depend on the cause for the same. For instance, if the bleeding is caused due to a broken nose, doctors will perform a surgery to rectify the bone, which will also bring the bleeding under control.

How is the Nosebleed Treatment done?

Nose bleeding can be caused due to a number of causes. When you visit the doctor with such a nose bleed, he/she will try to ascertain the reason behind the bleeding. An X-Ray or CT Scan may be recommended, which will give a better insight as to what is causing the bleeding. However, if the symptom is a result of a broken nose, a simple examination will be enough to determine the cause.

In case of a broken nose, the bone will be set by the physician and painkillers may be prescribed to deal with any discomfort. However, there may be other causes for the nose bleed. A deviated septum is one of the most conditions that can cause such a symptom. To treat this disorder, doctors may prescribe decongestants, antihistamines, nasal strips and sprays. In severe cases, surgery may be required to rectify the condition. If the medication is unable to treat the condition, the surgery called septoplasty may be performed.

Hay fever is another common cause for nose bleeding. Such a condition is caused when the patient comes in contact with certain allergens. Treatment for such a condition is generally limited to the use of antihistamines. Patients are also asked to stay away from the allergen that is causing the disorder.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

People experiencing moderate or severe nose bleeds should seek treatment. A moderate nose bleed is classified as such a condition where the bleeding occurs at least thrice in the span of 24 hours. Severe nose bleed on the other hand is a condition where the bleeding persists even when pressure is applied on the nose. During such bleeding, the blood may even flow down the throat of the patient.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

People experiencing a mild form of nose bleed will likely not need any medical treatment for the same. This is because remote instances of blood from the nose are considered to be common and not something to be distressed about. Furthermore, such nose bleeds can be easily managed by applying pressure on the nose for 10 minutes.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects depend on the treatment that is being used. If the bleeding is caused as a result of certain allergies, antihistamine is prescribed. Some of these medications may cause dizziness, nausea and restlessness. However, none of the side effects are severe and will likely disappear on their own. If patients develop serious side effects, they should consult the physicians immediately.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Post the treatment, patients should stay vigilant and watch out for other nose bleeds. If the bleeding recurs, the physician should be consulted immediately. Apart from this, patients must also care for the nose and nasal passages. Doctors may prescribe nasal sprays and other medications and it is crucial to follow the prescriptions.

How long does it take to recover?

Recovery depends on the underlying condition affecting the patient. If the condition is caused due to rhinitis, recovery may take a week or two. However, if the condition is caused due to a deviated septum, the symptoms may remain longer, even when the treatment is started.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Price of the treatment depends on the condition affecting the patient. However, in case of mild nose bleeding, no treatment may be needed. For moderate and severe nose bleeding the cost for treatment may be sizable. At any rate, the cost for treatment may be anywhere between Rs. 100 and Rs. 25,000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Results of the treatment are usually permanent, but the bleeding may recur due to an allergy or injury to the nose in the future.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

There are no alternatives to the treatment and the conventional medication may be the best way to cure excessive nose bleeds.
