Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Weed and alcohol addiction comes under substance abuse and addiction. Deaddiction treatment is best suited for such addictions. Medically assisted drug detoxification or alcohol detoxification alone is ineffective as a treatment for addiction. The national institute on drug abuse (nida) recommends detoxification followed by both medication (where applicable) and behavioral therapy, followed by relapse prevention.

Hello and welcome to Lybrate. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. You will need de-addiction therapy to quit your chewing tobacco addiction.
I suggest telephonic counseling and online psychotherapy for you.
You can contact me for further advice and treatment options. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user,
For someone smoking 4 - 5 cigarettes, if you motivate him to quit smoking continuously for 12 weeks, he will be able to quit fully. You can also give him appreciation for not smoking and continue your friendship.
If he faces withdrawal like headache, irritability, less concentration, memory lapses and increased hunger, then only he needs nicotex. He can take nicotex 2 mg whenever he has craving or withdrawal symptoms, Though he can take 12 gums in the first week, he ma...more

Dear user. I can understand. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Smoking can affect your mouth, throat, lungs, heart, stomach and brain in many ways. Cancer is one among the potential diseases smoking can cause. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like nicotine replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. Nicotine chewing gums too help as an alternative for cigarettes. But still...more

Dear Shyamal,
Your father can use Nicotex gum for maximum 12 weeks to quit smoking. With high BP, diabetes and age, smoking adds to risk for heart diseases. Quitting smoking reduces the risk even after many years of smoking. Nicotex will not be useful to quit alcohol. He may need other treatments for alcohol withdrawal.

Distract yourself. Turn on the tv, take a shower, or call a friend. The activity doesn’t matter as long as it gets your mind off smoking.
Remind yourself why you quit. Focus on your reasons for quitting, including the health benefits (lowering your risk for heart disease and lung cancer, for example), improved appearance, money you’re saving, and enhanced self-esteem.
Get out of a tempting situation. Where you are or what you’re doing may be triggering the craving. If so, a change of sce...more
