Gardan Dard Ke Liye Yog!

Know How Technology Is Causing Health Problems!

In the technologically advanced era one lives in, it is pretty much easy to use up one’s entire day glued to the digital screens; right from checking the social media updates while commuting to sitting before the computer for everyday work. Yet nobody is aware of the fact that apart from creating a social gap, these electronic gadgets can take a toll on their postures too.

  1. You lean against your desks with your neck leaned forward in an attempt to grasp what is on the computer screen and your hand on your mouse scrunched up on one side. Sadly, human body was never designed to pose in such a consorted way resulting in adverse side effects.
  2. The head usually weighs 10 to 12 pounds on an average when it is balanced evenly over the shoulders. However, with each extra tilt forward, the weight on your spine might escalate up to 60 pounds and even beyond that. Excessive weight on the spine can lead to its subsequent collapse.

  1. Too much use of tablets and smart phones for swiping or texting can cause inflamed index fingers, thumb joints and tendons. You tend to suffer from wrist pain, enfeebled grip or popping sound while moving the fingers. Typing with one thumb without giving considerable breaks in between can also exert stress on the fingers.
  2. Hunched over, shoulders slumped and necks bent down are the ways majority of the people use their electronic gadgets. This can trigger misalignment of the spine aggravating your health. Spine protects the nervous system, coordinating and controlling various functions of the body. Any sort of disruption might render a drastic consequence.
  3. Poor posture impacts the ligaments and muscles in a negative way giving way to a series of complications such as gastrointestinal problems, back or neck pain or severe curvature of the spine, heightening the risk of arterial or pulmonary problems.

Is It Common To Have Neck Pain?

Neck pain is a common medical condition which can be easily treated if proper care and medications are taken. It usually occurs due to strained neck muscles due to a bad posture, though there might be other causes as well. Rarely, neck pain can be a symptom of a more serious problem as the condition is relatively mild in nature. The symptoms of a neck pain are very obvious which refers to any kind of discomfort in moving your neck on a daily basis. Along with this you might also have headache, stiffness of the head and muscle tightness.

Some of the most common causative factors of neck pain are listed below.

A muscle strain generally happen when you exert too much pressure on your neck continuously for long periods. It also happens when you have your neck fixed in the same position for long hours of the day. Muscle strains in the neck may occur when you keep your neck bent in the wrong way while doing activities like reading a book, looking at your mobile phone or working over your laptop for extended hours.

  • Worn joints-

Just like all the other bodily joints, the neck joint also tends to wither and degrade with age. This phenomena is known as the wearing/wear and tear of the joints. The bones of the neck joint tend to wither with time, thereby making your joint frail and exposing it to various pains and medical conditions.

  • Nerve compression-

Nerve compression is a medical symptom whereby there is excessive pressure put on one particular nerve in the body. Herniated discs or bone spurs in the vertebrae of your neck can press on the nerves branching out from the spinal cord, hence causing a long lasting neck pain. Damage caused from a nerve compression may be minor or severe depending on the pressure applied. It may cause temporary or long-lasting problems depending on the degree of damage caused. The earlier you get a diagnosis and treatment for nerve compression, the more quickly you will find relief.

  • Whiplash-

Neck related injuries are common phases of pain and discomfort caused due to an external damage to the neck as a result of a tragic sports related or vehicular accident. A neck injury is also known as a whiplash and it refers to an injury due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip. Whiplash mostly occurs during accidents, physical abuse or other trauma.

Neck Sprains And Strains - How To Cure It?

A neck strain and sprain is not a serious injury. However, they can still cause significant dysfunction and pain.

Causes of Neck Strain

The anatomy of the cervical spine is such that it not only houses, but also protects the spinal cord. Along with this it supports the head and allows it for mobility and motion. But this area, which allows the spine to be flexible can also leave it vulnerable for injury.

Triggers for the onset of neck muscle strain can be:

1. Too much time spent in an uncomfortable position, such as humping over the steering wheel while driving, bending over the computer monitor, talking on the phone while placing it in the crook of the neck.

2. Sleeping on a very high or too firm pillow can lead to an uncomfortable position of the head thus leading to the strain of the neck

3. Carrying heavy objects on one side of the body

4. Any trauma that might have impacted the neck, such as an accident, whiplash or a fall that might have had a head landing

Most events of a neck muscle strain or the soft tissue sprain, such as the tendons and ligaments lead to stiff neck along with pain in shoulders. There is also pain and difficulty in moving the neck or head.

Neck muscle strain remedies

Minor strains in the tendons, ligaments and muscles of the neck usually heal within a day or two. But till the symptoms subside, there are a few self care remedies that are effective in reducing the stiffness and pain. These are:

1. Application of cold or ice packs: The cold reduces the inflammation, which in turn allows the strain to heal. This ice pack should be applied for 20 minutes interval in the first 24 hours.

2. Application of heat: Heat helps in bringing the nutrient rich blood to the affected area in order to stimulate a healing response. Moist heat as well as heat from a hot shower or bath can be used. Some people might find relief from applying heat wraps such as thermacare.

3. Over-the-counter or OTC medications: Anti-inflammatory medication, such as naproxen and ibuprofen reduces inflammation, thereby leading to the reduction in pain. Pain relieving medicines such as acetaminophen can also be taken as this reduces the perception of pain.

4. Massage of the affected area: A gentle massage in the affected area helps in stimulating the blood flow of the area which in turn helps in a quick healing.

Neck Pain & Stiffness - Ways You Can Get Rid Of Them!

Neck pain and stiffness can give you a harrowing time. From children to aged people, the condition is a common problem that can affect all and sundry. In addition to the pain and discomfort, the condition also restricts the head movement. The neck bones and muscles are important as they not only give support to the head but also ensures its free and unrestricted movement.

Stiff neck and neck pain can be an amalgamation of various factors such as -
Our professional commitments often demand spending hours before the computer. The sedentary lifestyle is the main wrecker in chief, giving rise to many health complications, with neck pain and stiffness being one amongst them. Sitting in one position for long often results in muscle pull (tension) and strain. The muscle tension can also be an outcome of incorrect sleeping posture.

  • Neck injury and inflammation sustained during an exercise or due to an accident can also result in neck pain.
  • Neck injury followed by pain and stiffness can also be an outcome of Whiplash (a condition where a person suddenly jerks the head).
  • Stiffness and neck pain can also be triggered by medical conditions such as MeningitisRheumatoid Arthritis (of the neck), Heart attackFibromyalgia(muscular pain particularly in the shoulder and neck area), Cancer (of the spine), Spondylosis, and Spinal stenosis, to name a few.

Seek medical assistance in case

  • The condition aggravates and persists for long.
  • The pain and stiffness are sudden and unexplained.
  • Pain that slowly moves down the arms and legs.
  • In addition to the neck pain and stiffness, a person complains of a headache, nauseavomitingfever, difficulty in eating food, a bowel disorder.
  • A lump (in the neck) accompanied by pain and stiffness needs immediate and thorough investigation.

Diagnosis and treatment
Neck pain and stiffness are often diagnosed by

  • Physical examination.
  • A lumbar puncture can also aid in the diagnosis.
  • Imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, CT scans, Electromyography
  • Blood tests.

Depending on the severity, a doctor decides upon the course and mode of treatment

  1. The use of ice packs or heat pads (avoid very high temperature) on the affected area every 2-3 hours (for 15-20 minutes) can provide great relief.
  2. Gentle massaging can go a long way to relieve the pain and stiffness. It only helps to improve the blood circulation.
  3. Neck exercises and stretching play a pivotal role in strengthening the neck muscles, thereby reducing the pain and stiffness. However, in an endeavour to achieve maximum results, do not overdo yourself.
  4. Medicines such as Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), Tylenol, Advil, corticosteroid injections, come in handy in case of severe pain and inflammation.
  5. Use of a neck collar provides support to the affected area.
  6. Surgery may be recommended (very rare) in the case of serious complications.
  7. Some patients also benefit from Acupuncture and Chiropractic (alternate medicines).

Kati Basti (Pain relief)!

Kati Basti (Pain relief)
When it comes to treating back, neck and shoulder pain and general muscle tension in the body Ayurveda has a very specialized approach.

Ayurveda looks at each person on an individual basis and takes a holistic approach with an Ayurvedic practitioner looking at restoring all the bodily functions when dealing with back pain or musculoskeletal disorders. There are many different causes for back pain varying from stress, poor posture physical trauma, poor diet, and lifestyle to name a few, and for that reason, this approach is essential for a long lasting result.

Kati Basti is a musculoskeletal treatment for disorders that involve muscle (mamsa), ligaments, bones (ashti), vertebrae and nerves (majja). Symptoms associated with such disorders are inflammation, pain, stiffness and restricted movements.

One of the most commonly seen causes in today’s modern world is the increase of sedentary occupations and many hours spent sitting at a computer where the back loses its strength, with the addition of poor body posture, lack of mobility and stress, over the years this can accumulate to severe back issues that need a specific therapy that works on a very deep level other than just a regular massage.

Kati Basti massage is a very beneficial treatment specific for lower back painsciatica, herniated and ruptured discs cervical pain, stiff neck, whiplash, migraines frozen shoulder, shoulder bursitis, RSI, knee pain, ankylosing spondylitisrheumatoid arthritis, dislocated shoulder, thoracic discomfort, knee and wrist problems and giving in the thoracic area for when ones is holding onto a lot of emotions.

In Ayurveda the doshas involved

  • Musculoskeletal disorders are mainly Vata which is aggravated and can create more dryness, stiffness, pain and tightness in the affected areas, this also leads to aggravation in Pitta dosha as there will be inflammation in the area which causes more pain.
  • The nerves are also found throughout the muscles and when they also become stiff and tight the conduction of nerve impulse is also effected known as Vata obstruction.

The Dhatus or tissues involved and how there qualities relate to musculoskeletal disorders

  • Include muscle (mamsa), fat (meda) nerve (majja) and bone (ashti).
  • The qualities in the muscle (mamsa) and fat tissue (meda) are heavy, soft, moist, dense, smooth and flexible and the bone tissue (ashti) are porous, light, hard and rough.
  • When the qualities of Vata (dryness, lack of movement blood and nerve flow ) and Kapha (stagnation) Ama (toxins) manifest in the muscle (mamsa) nerve (majja) and fat tissues (meda) the tissues become stiff, hard, immobile and rigid, this results in pain and discomfort in these areas. This can ultimately affect the bone tissue (ashti) also. leading to array of problems of the spine, joints and muscles.

The treatment:

A well made of dough from black lentil flour, is placed over the problem area and filled with medicated oil heated to a specific temperature and held at this temperature for a specific period of time. This helps to soften the rigid, tight and hard tissue which results in easing pain and increasing mobility of the affected area.

Once the dam is removed a back massage is given followed by a herbal steam treatment to help deepen the overall effect of the treatment.

Benefits of this treatment are many, the use of heat, the oil and the specific technique used to result in a profound healing process, as the treatment not only repairs the damaged tissue but also rejuvenates the area.

The benefits of the warm medicated oil work to

: Soften and loosen dry and tight muscles
: Decrease stiffness and create elasticity in the muscle and surrounding tissue
: Ease muscle spasm and increase range of motion
: The aid of heat from the oil helps to
: Dilate local blood vessels to increase blood flow
: Increase in blood flow can reduce pain
: Heat reduces swelling thereby reducing pressure on nerve endings
: Blood flow aids in the healing process
This treatment is much more than a massage technique it is a specific therapy for musculoskeletal disorders.

Herbal Ayurveda Treatment & Home recommendations Integrative medicine
Many Ayurveda herbs also work to aid the healing process from those suffering from discomfort, in the form of natural, anti pain, anti-inflammatory, anti spasmodic, herbs that stimulate movement of blood to speed up the healing process. These complex Ayurvedic formulations work well in conjunction with treatment and home care using Ayurvedic oils. Home recommendations in the form of Yoga therapy can also be made.

Many sports people can also benefit from this treatment as it helps to strengthen the muscle tissue and increase mobility all of which can enhance an all-around sports performance.

Why Agnikarma Is The Best Option For Pain Relief?

Why Agnikarma Is The Best Option For Pain Relief?

Ayurveda provides safe, holistic and dependable treatments for most ailments that are common in the 21st century, like stress, bad posture, and the pain it brings with it. Several types of pain are common among working millenials, especially pain in the neck, head, back region, eyes, along the spinal cord, and in the region of the waist. The most reliable Ayurveda treatment for healing all of these is Agnikarma. Agnikarma involves the application of heat on the affected area, enough to cause therapeutic burns, but not enough to scald the skin or cause discomfort. The burns are made on the part most affected by the pain, for maximum impact.

When is Agnikarma most effective?
Agnikarma is most effective when removing pain caused by the following:

Benefits of Agnikarma:
Why should you go with Agnikarma over and above other conventional reasons? Here are the reasons!

  1. No downtime: The process is usually completed swiftly, results visible in 2-4 weeks, and assures no recovery period or ‘downtime’. This makes it very convenient for busy professionals on tight schedules and approaching deadlines.
  2. Accessible treatment: Agnikarma is a treatment devised and perfected in India. The treatment is available in most towns and cities.
  3. Diversity: This treatment cures pain arising due to troubles in bones, ligaments, joints, tendons and cartilages, all. Therefore, it is a one-stop solution to all your problems.
  4. No surgery: Nowadays, with the rising number of incidents of invasive surgery, permanent organ damage and formation of lethal scar tissue, the fear of surgery is not unfounded at all. This is where Agnikarma has a huge advantage – it does not involve surgery, and on the other hand, reduces the chance of you ever needing surgery. It may postpone surgery if it can’t altogether remove the need for it.

How is it done?
In Agnikarma treatment, the areas in your body in the most pain are identified and marked. After that, a metallic object called the Shalaka is brought into use. This is heated up and applied directly to those sensitive areas. The heat is transferred from the Shalaka to them, healing them through heat therapy. The process gives long lasting relief from pain, and gives a host of related benefits like improvement of blood supply to the region, reducing joint cramps and stiffness, relaxing muscles and decreasing the chances of infection.

Agnikarma treatment in Ayurveda is the one of the best ones out there for effective pain management. It involves drugless treatment that shows results within a few weeks, that too with zero downtime. If you are suffering from acute or chronic joint, muscle, bone or related organ pain, you should book your session right away!

Shoulder Pain - Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment Of It!

Shoulder Pain - Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment Of It!

Shoulder pain can be a persistent dull and nagging sensation in the upper arm or shoulder area. It can be easily differentiated from neck pain as it is related to the movement of shoulders i.e. it will increase and decrease with shoulder movements, especially overhead activities. The other signs to identify shoulder pain is if your shoulder movements are reduced.

If you find it difficult to scratch / wash your back, comb your hair or reach your back pocket, it clearly shows you are suffering from shoulder pain. Shoulder pain can happen due to various reasons, it varies from person to person depending on the activities he/she is involved in, for e.g. sports, manual job etc. It can be a single major injury or multiple small injuries due to repetitive usage patterns. Also, degenerative changes in various parts of the shoulder can lead to shoulder pain.

In case of middle to old age, injuries that can cause shoulder pain are:

  • Biceps Tendonitis
  • Acromio-clavicular Joint arthritis
  • Scapular Dyskinesia
  • Trapezitis
  • Suprascapular nerve entrapment In young age, injury due to sports or gym activity can cause shoulder pain
  • Superior labral anterior/posterior (SLAP tear)lesion

Also, traumatic or repeated dislocations of shoulder can cause shoulder pain due to:

  • Bankart lesion

Diagnose Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can be diagnosed only after thorough history taking and clinical examination. However, some imaging studies can be very helpful like:

  1. X-rays: Through an x-ray one can view the shoulder in many different views.
  2. UltrasoundWith an ultrasound, you can also check the damaged caused to the tendons and muscles of the shoulder but the quality of reporting depends upon the expertise of the doctor.
  3. MRI: MRI gives a clear picture of the shoulder as it shows everything related to a shoulder joint that is joints, vessels, tendons and muscles that too from different angles.
  4. Diagnostic ArthroscopyA surgical procedure often used by orthopaedic surgeons to diagnose and treat issues inside a joint. Arthroscopy has the big advantage that one can use it to diagnose as well as treat at the same time.

Treatment for Various Types of Shoulder Pain

  1. For Shoulder Impingement or Rotator Cuff tear: Give rest to the shoulder for a few days only Dedicated Physiotherapy Protocol Bursal injections If these fail then, (Surgery)Arthroscopic sub-acromial decompression If Cuff tear is found, then one can go for Arthroscopic/Mini-open repair
  2. Labral Lesions: For anterior Labral lesions (Bankart's) following anterior shoulder dislocation then surgery in the form of Arthroscopic Bankart's repair is the only option to reduce risk of recurrence and degeneration.

SLAP Lesions

  1. Pain relief and physiotherapy as first step If this fails then following surgical options are available
  2. Arthroscopic debridement or repair of labrum
  3. Biceps tenotomy or tenodesis

Arthritis

In this case, the joint is already destroyed and has to be resurfaced for pain relief and to maintain ROM. If Rotator cuff muscles are working, then Shoulder resurfacing hemiarthroplasty (preferred in young people), that has a life of 10 to 15 years, Total shoulder replacement (preferred in middle aged to old people) has a life of 10 to 15 years. But, if rotator cuff muscle are not working then Reverse Geometry Shoulder replacement is recommended, that has a life of 10 years.

It is always advisable to get yourself diagnosed properly in case of shoulder pain as management changes depending on clinical situations. Neglecting shoulder conditions can lead to bigger problems later on.
