An abscessed tooth is an infection caused by tooth decay, periodontal disease or a cracked tooth. These problems can let bacteria enter the pulp (the soft tissue of a tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue) and can lead to pulp death. Dear lybrate user, tooth abscess is usually accompanied with swelling, sensitivity to hot and cold and throbbing pain in the tooth or foul smell and salty taste in the mouth. The cause of abscess is tooth decay so the tooth involved is never healthy, it is decayed. The abscess needs to be drained and proper root canal treatment is required to prevent the infection from spreading to the jaw.
