If your toenail turns black, it's most likely a bruise under the nail, technically called a subungual hematoma. You can get it from stubbing a toe or from footwear that cram your feet into the front of the shoe.

In most cases, pus will drain on its own after soaking the infection. You may need to apply a bit of pressure by gently rubbing or squeezing the area with a damp cloth or cotton swab. If this does not work, then see your doctor. You doctor may take a small needle to open up the affected area and drain the pus.

You may be referring to beau's lines, which are grooves that run horizontally across the nail plate. They usually develop when nail plate growth, which begins in the nail matrix (located under the cuticle), is temporarily disrupted.

I am an 18 year old female. I have had toenail fungus for as long as I can remember, possibly stemming from very poor blood circulation. Poor blood circulation is genetic and my siblings have it too, but they don’t have toenail fungus. It’s very likely that I have raynaud's phenomenon. I don’t have any other health conditions and I have a strong immune system, but my diet is extremely poor. I really want to get rid of this toenail fungus as it makes me self conscious and i’m worried about the fungus possibly getting worse or entering my bloodstream. They are brittle, yellow, deformed, curved and broken. It’s worrying too that when I cut one of the nails it starts bleeding. Like the inside of the nail begins to bleed out, as if there’s a blood clot behind it or something. I’m freaked out that it’s something serious. I really don’t want to take oral medication so if there’s any applicable medication to put directly on the nails or any home remedies especially, I would appreciate that. I really need help. I’d like to know why it starts bleeding, and how I can stop this. Thanks zoe.

If you let a nail fungus infection go for too long, several problems emerge. The infected nail can become misshapen and increasingly separated from your nail bed. Itching and pain are unpleasant side effects; if they're too severe, you can have trouble wearing shoes or walking.

It is common for a nail to turn black after an injury. The black or purple-black colour is caused by blood under the nail and will go away as the injury heals.
