Some symptoms can include pain and tenderness along the vein and hardening and feeling cord-like. Superficial thrombophlebitis is usually a benign and short-term condition. Symptoms generally subside in 1 to 2 weeks, but hardness of the vein may remain for much longer.

The presence of other symptoms or a bump that's more than a couple of inches across should be examined in an emergency room. A bump that doesn't get smaller within a few days should also be checked out by a doctor. Usually, hematomas disappear on their own and require no treatment.
