Yes, if it is hyperthyroidism, it can be cured permanently by removing your thyroid through a surgery. Thyroid can also be destroyed through medications depending on the severity. There is no cure for hypothyroidism but treatment can keep the condition in control and you can lead a normal life. Treatment of hypothyroidism has only one option which is thyroid replacement medication (synthetic drug for example levothyroxine). Meanwhile there are few various options for treating hyperthyroidism. These include: anti thyroid drugs such as propylthiouracil and methimazole, beta blockers, radioactive iodine, surgery (thyroidectomy).

Hypothyroidism can be checked easily through a simple blood test. Your doctor will check your hormone levels to determine if you have hypothyroidism. However, in case of hyperthyroidism, your doctor will examine your thyroid gland to find out if it is bigger than the usual size. Your fingers might also shiver when you hold them out straight.
