Common Types Of Cancer You Don't Know!

India is slowing making its way towards the top listed countries with the maximum number of cancer patients. It actually ranks third in the world after China and the USA. The statistics are alarming. While genes play a part in determining who will contract cancer and who won’t, you can still reduce your chances of getting it, if you spot the signs early on and seek treatment right away. Read on to learn about the most common types of cancer in the country and some of their symptoms.

Breast Cancer

The incident rate of this disease is 25.8 among 10,000 women in India. And the mortality rate is around 12.7 in 10,000.

The symptoms of breast cancer are-

  • A lump in the breast

  • Change in the shape of the breasts or nipples

  • Pain in the breasts

  • Retraction of the nipple

  • Discharge of blood from the nipples

If you notice any of these symptoms, consult a doctor who will recommend mammography. A woman who has reached her 40s should opt for regular mammography. And every woman should perform self-examination as soon as she turns 20.

Oral Cancer

Of all the reported oral cancer incidents around the world, 86% of the cases are from India. The chief reason why so many cases of oral cancer arise in India is due to the inclination of Indians for tobacco consumption. Alcohol too contributes to it. Detected in the early stages, oral cancer may not be fatal. Here are some signs you need to watch out for-

  • Ulcers in the mouth

  • Teeth falling out prematurely

  • Voice becoming harsh

  • Pain while swallowing saliva and food

Kicking the habit of smoking and excessive drinking is suggested. But if you cannot quit, make sure you regularly check your mouth for abnormalities.

Cervical Cancer

The cervix is present at the lowermost part of the uterus. And cancer of this organ is shockingly common. Some of the symptoms of cervical cancer are-

  • Bleeding between periods

  • Unnatural discharge

  • Bleeding after sex

  • Pain the lower abdomen

Cervical cancer can be detected through a PAP smear test.

Lung Cancer

It is one of the leading causes of death in India. Both first hand and passive smoking can lead to it. some of the symptoms are-

  • Breathlessness and hoarse voice

  • Pain in the chest

  • Blood while coughing

Try avoiding smoking at all costs. Wearing a pollution mask will help. Cancer can be lethal. But the right action at the right time can save you.

I want to ask for lungs cancers treatment which surgery was best laparoscopic or robotic surgery. Asap.

Dr.Rakshith Das 90% (318ratings)
General Physician, Bangalore
1. By laparoscopy if you mean minimally invasive thoracic surgery. It is better. 2. Selecting procedure for surgery is all about customizing it for the type and extent of lung cancer and according to patient compliance. 3. Without knowing disease burden, its hard to select what's best for your patient.

Hello doctor my mother is suffering from metastatic lung non small cancer. She is completely normal apart from severe pain in hip pain. Please suggest what we can look for tumor in hip and pain. We don't want to go radiotherapy and etc.

Dr.Rachana Soneji 93% (494ratings)

General Physician,
As your mother is having metastatic lung cancer she would have had primary site if her cancer somewhere else in her body which after treatment or with no treatment now has reached her lungs. The ideal treatment for your mother is to go for radio or chemo therapy but as a family member if you have decided not to go for that there are palliative treatment options available for her which will not treat the cancer but can give her some relief from her severe bone pain. Thanks and kindly feedback and you can consult anytime.

Hello, I am a metastatic lung cancer patient and I have been having reddish blood colored bumps or knots on my arms, back, and legs for the last 3 months. They are very painful and have a very hard bump inside of the red area. Could these be a sign of bone cancer?

I am sorry to hear about your concern but will be happy to assist you. Organ toxicities may be more problematic in the elderly, but in most tumours, the efficacy of chemotherapy is not age dependent. Chemotherapy, where indicated for advanced cancer, can therefore be safely and effectively used in selected elderly patients. Managing advanced cancer in the elderly is an increasing problem. A friend told me a child can get lung cancer if he inhale smoke of even one party popper (those small fireworks that kids use at birthday parties) is this true?

Dr.Sharyl Eapen George 93% (1176ratings)
General Physician, Ooty
Dear user, it is not necessary that only exposure to smoke causes lung cancer. There have been cases where people who are not exposed to smoke or cigarettes in any form but they have lung cancer. It is completely based on genetics and the body's immunity. You can consult me for more doubts regarding this online by clicking on my photo and booking an appointment however, if you found my answer helpful, please leave a positive feedback as it helps me with my practice. Thank you.
