Low Sugar Questions

I am 24 years old female. I have been suffering from frequent bouts of hypoglycemia which arises after exercising or fasting since last 5-6 months. The readings in glucometer have always been from 23 to 57 during such episodes. Eating something immediately relieves the symptoms but tiredness remains for whole day. Please give some advice? Also, I have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis since april, 2018 and I am taking mesacol 60 ml enema 3 days per week since then.

Thanks for your Query. My advise to you is that you take some light snacks before doing exercise, secondly take small easily digestible meals at regular intervals. Secondly I would like to advise you to take a Pre Probiotic on daily basis which will help in your colitis also. For further information and advise you can book an online consultation with me on Lybrate. Thank you. Take care till then.

When you are sick, the sugar levels may fluctuate more drastically than normal times. So please consult your doctor and let the doctor examine you and see the test results (fresh reports) to assess your present condition and then adjust the medicines. Please read from the internet about hypoglycemia episodes in diabetes patients and (also about complications and it's management ). Take necessary precautions (ensure you eat properly when you take the medicines) and be prepared for such situations.

Suggestionn Read food labels. If possible, choose low-sodium alternatives of the foods and beverages you normally buy. Eat fewer processed foods. Only a small amount of sodium occurs naturally in foods. Most sodium is added during processing. Don't add salt. Just 1 level teaspoon of salt has 2,300 mg of sodium. Use herbs or spices to add flavor to your food. Ease into it. If you don't feel you can drastically reduce the sodium in your diet suddenly, cut back gradually. Your palate will adjust over time.

Hope you have informed this to the doctor who is treating her. A thorough review during the followup - consideration of the history of events and the reports (previous and new reports) along with physical examination will help the doctor to fine-tune the treatment. Please discuss with the doctor about the precautions to be taken to avoid hypoglycemia (and if needed even adjust the dosage of the insulin or change it etc ). Learn more about hypoglycemia from the internet and educate everyone how it can be avoided by following simple steps of precaution and by being vigilant all the times. Also take care of her diet and inspire her to be active physically. Train your mother and other family members who attend to her to be vigilant and understand the signs and symptoms and how to communicate to the doctor. A healthy lifestyle and regular follow-up will help her to come out of this situation very soon. You can also take a second opinion if you are not convinced by the doctor or things do not get better.
