6. Prepare a paste of lemon, kalaunji (seeds of fennel flower) and milk. Apply it on your face on a regular basis before going to bed. Wash your face with lukewarm water in the morning. This remedy ensures speedy disappearance of acne.

7. Make a mixture of nimbu (lemon), extracts of tulsi (basil) and black kasundi (coffee pods), dry it in sun and apply the mixture on face. It is a powerful remedy that is known to cure the problem of acne.

Besides these home remedies, a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle will also enable you to reduce the risk of recurrent acne.

Endometriosis - A Possible Therapy In Ayruveda!

Endometriosis is a painful disorder wherein, a tissue that normally belongs to the inside of a woman’s uterus, starts to grow out of the uterus. It common involves a woman’s ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue, which lines the pelvis. In case of endometriosis, the displaced endometrial tissue continues to act like normal, becomes thick, breaks down and leads to bleeding with each menstrual cycle. Endometriosis can lead to pain, which might be severe especially during a woman’s period.

Causes of Endometriosis:

  1. Embryonic Cells Getting Transformed: Hormones like estrogen might transform the cells, which are in the early stage of development, into implantation of endometrial cells at the time of puberty.
  2. Surgical Scar Implantation: After undergoing a surgery like a hysterectomy or C-section, the endometrial cells might get attached to the incisions done for conducting the surgery.
  3. Transport of Endometrial Cells: The tissue fluid system or the blood vessels might transport the endometrial cells to different parts of the body.

Let us take a look at some of the symptoms of endometriosis:

  1. Periods which become painful
  2. Pain suffered during or after the intercourse.
  3. Feeling of pain during bowel movements
  4. Excess bleeding
  5. Infertility

Possible location of endometriosis:

  1. Ovaries(the most common site)
  2. Fallopian tubes
  3. Back of the uterus
  4. Front of the uterus
  5. Uterine ligaments such as the broad or round ligament of the uterus
  6. Pelvic walls
  7. Intestines
  8. Urinary bladder and ureters

Investigations Required in Endometriosis
The investigations required in endometriosis are as follows:

  1. Pelvic Exam – In this exam, a doctor manually tends to feel certain areas in pelvis for any kind of abnormality like cysts or the reproductive organs or scars behind the uterus.
  2. Ultrasound High-frequency sound waves are used to create certain images inside the body, through capturing them via a device known as transducer and getting it pressed against a woman’s abdomen.
  3. MRI MRI by way of magnetic field and radio waves help to get detailed images of the tissues and organs in the body.
  4. Laparoscopy Endometriosis through the eyes of ayurveda: The signs and symptoms mentioned in endometriosis are described in ayurveda under the heading of vataja yonivyapadh and udavartha.
    • Apana Vata is considered as the main functioning agent to maintain normal menstruation.
    • This is vitiated due to sedentary life style, lack of exercise, sleep, irregular sleep, stressful professional atmosphere, mental tensions and unhealthy food habits.
    • The deranged apana vata causes retrograde menstruation leading to endometriosis. Along with this, the other two doshas-pitta and kapha are vitiated leading to hormonal imbalance and abnormal growth of endometrium respectively. Hence, the first and foremost step is to restore the physiology of these doshas.

What are shodhanas?
Shodhanas are detoxifying procedures like snehana, svedana, vamana, virechana and basti. Benefits of shodhana in female reproductive system:

  • Biological systems return to normalcy.
  • Revitalizes body tissues
  • Potentiates pharmacological actions of internal medicines
  • Removes toxins
  • Improves physiological functions and gut absorption.

Also, improper metabolism is corrected

  • Mental faculties, strength and vitality are enhanced
  • Fine tunes the endocrine system (hormonal balance correcting hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis).
  • Promotive-promotes fertility, preventive-prevents recurrence and curative- cures from the root and rehabilitative too.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Endometriosis
Endometriosis’s treatment in Ayurveda requires an anti-Pitta diet and regimen, where there would be complete avoidance of all spices, except coriander, turmeric and saffron. One must also refrain from having

  1. Salt
  2. Alcohol
  3. Refined sugar

Good herbs might get included in the form of:

  1. Shatavari
  2. Kumari Saar
  3. Kanchanar
  4. Ashoka
  5. Lodhra
  6. Pradranta Churna

As per Ayurveda, Endometriosis happens as a result of more Kapha due to increased growth of the uterine membrane. Anti-kapha, anti-tumor and general detoxification can be helpful along with some typical herbs like Guggul, Myrrh, Turmeric and Dandelion

How can Diet and Yoga help to improve Endometriosis?
Modifications in diet by switching to the intake of healthy foods and Yoga can help to a great extent in improving Endometeriosis. Some of the diet tips include:

  1. Avoiding foods like cakes, donuts and fries that contain trans fats.
  2. Cut down on consumption of red meat
  3. Have lots of fruit, vegetables and whole grains
  4. Put a check on consumption of caffeine and alcohol
  5. Reduce the intake of processed foods.

Impact of Yoga

  1. Yoga, with its structured approach towards the body help reduce the symptoms of emdometriosis, while improving the general functioning of the body & oxygenation to the organs.
  2. Women, who have tried out Yoga in order to decrease pain, also observed that there has been an improvement in their condition through healing.
  3. Control in the breathing exercises decrease anxiety and a general sense of well-being is promoted.
  4. Yoga helps to ease out menstrual pain, improves fertility and helps in bringing about hormonal balance.

Irregular Periods - How Ayurvedic Remedies Can Help?

In an incredibly fast paced and unhealthy lifestyle of the modern world, irregular menses aren’t exactly an unusual situation. The length of a monthly cycle may either last longer than usual or end earlier than usual, only to begin in a short while again, accompanied by greater abdominal pain and blood loss. Irregular cycles may vary from 8 to 21 days or more. The variation of 21 days or more is considered highly irregular and abnormal. A woman may face some menstrual irregularities at both ends of menstrual life, (onset- menarche and end of cycle- menopause) which is normal and in most of the cases, it is self-establishing.

Causes of Irregular Menstrual Cycle:

The cause of irregularities in menstrual cycle is basically hormone imbalance. The altered levels in the body lead to irregular cycles. There are many factors in routine life which affect hormonal balance. Some of them are:

  1. Poor diet or wrong dietary habits
  2. Stress and anxiety, thoughts and emotions
  3. Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity and exercise, too much physical exertion, stress and strain during menses.
  4. Illness: Long-term illness like fever, tuberculosis, thyroid problem etc.
  5. Medication: Certain medicine if taken for a long time, like oral contraceptive pills, hormonal therapy etc., alters hormonal balance.
  6. Imbalance of Tridosha (vatta, pitta and kapha) in body, leads to irregularities of reproductive system.

As per Ayurveda, Vatta is the main culprit in menstrual irregularities.

How To Deal With Menstrual Irregularities:

With the sudden acceptance of eastern concepts of yoga and organic and indigenous medicines around the world, Ayurveda has gained importance in treating irregular menses, gynecological and obstetric problems.

  1. Lifestyle and Food- There is no alternative for lifestyle and food habits correction. Eating healthy and nutritious food, regular exercise, yoga, physical activity, outdoor games lead to good physical health.
  2. Meditation and Breathing: Exercise is good for taming hormones. It keeps a person physical and mentally healthy.
  3. Avoid heavy physical work during menses.
  4. A good oil massage over body keeps Vatta in balance (one of the important tridoshas of body: vatta, pitta and kapha).

Ayurveda has proven to be much helpful in regulating the menstrual cycles. According to certain studies, Ayurveda came in rather handy while tackling PCOS, a disease distressing 1 in 3 women today. It is certain that Ayurveda medicines work better in certain scenarios and definitely have fewer risks in comparison to allopathic medicines and surgeries. Over a period of time, they have proven much more beneficial in overcoming the irregular menses and the irritation along with the accompanying pain and PMS symptoms. Ayurvedic medicines use herbs and roots and almost everything found in nature to discover a rather organic cure for diseases. Certain plants like Shatavari are used to reduce the much spoken about mood swings or PMS symptoms during periods which can only worsen in case of an irregularity. The bark of the Ashoka tree has proven to be quite helpful in relieving menstrual pain and excessive bleeding. Other plants and their parts like the Lodhra, Guggul, Guduchi and Amlaki, Jatamansi etc. are useful in regulating periods and reducing the stress and irritation accompanied by it.

Panchkarma- Basti therapy (Enema- administration of medicines through rectal route). In this treatment, decoction of different herbs and medicated oils are used for giving enema. Basti has proven its efficacy since centuries, for treating Vatta. A course of 5, 8, 15, 30 or 60 basti, as per person’s requirement can be given for menstrual problems. Irregular periods, although are faced by a large chunk of women, pose different symptoms for different people and hence individualized treatment is advised.

Infertility - How Ayurvedic Remedies Can Help?

Not everyone can conceive a baby easily. The inability to conceive a baby despite having intercourse during the fertile window in a woman’s menstrual cycle for over a year is termed as infertility. Infertility does not affect only the physical health of a woman, but also her mental and emotional well-being as well as the couple’s social health.

In some cases, infertility can be treated with Ayurveda. According to Ayurveda, a couple needs to be both physically and mentally strong and healthy. Ayurveda believes that a lack of nutrition in the shukra dhatu or the person’s reproductive tissue is the cause of infertility. This can be triggered by indigestion, anxiety, depression, insomnia and the presence of toxins in the body. Some of the ways ayurveda can be used to treat infertility are as follows:

  1. Eat cool foods: Spicy food can affect the quality of shukra dhatu and lower the quality and quantity of both sperm and ovum. This is because shukra dhatu requires a cool environment to promote fertility. Hence, eat food that is easy to digest and which has a cooling effect on the body. Men can benefit from foods like asparagus, dates and almonds, while foods like quinoa and pineapples can help a woman conceive easily.
  2. Shirodhara therapy: Shirodhara involves the movement of liquid over the forehead in a rhythmic manner at specific points. This stimulates the hypothalamus, pituitary and pineal glands and aids in the secretion of hormones including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). When it comes to women, FSH stimulates the ovarian follicles into releasing an egg without which it would be impossible to conceive a child.
  3. Fight stressOne of the effects of stress is reduced libido. Prolonged exposure to stress is often a major factor that contributes to infertility. When it comes to women, stress makes a woman ovulate less regularly. In men, stress can affect the sperm production and affect testosterone levels. To fight stress, try deep breathing exercises like alom vilom or keep a little time aside each morning for a walk or light exercise.
  4. LodhraThis herb is very beneficial in treating women with infertility. It stimulates FSH and luteinising hormones (LH) and lowers the risk of a miscarriage. It also increases chances of conception. Lodhra should be taken twice a day along with honey and milk.
  5. Lifestyle changes: Ayurveda is not only about herbal medicines but also following the right lifestyle. Bad habits like smoking, drug usage and alcohol not only affect a person’s overall health but also interfere with fertility. Hence, when trying to conceive a child, quit these bad habits and try following a healthier lifestyle that involves following a routine, eating right and exercising regularly.

Dysmenorrhoea - How Ayurveda Is Beneficial In Treating It?

Dysmenorrhoea is the term used to describe painful periods. Normal ovulatory menstruation can be painful, but when it affects one’s routine for example absence in school or office or unable to do day-to-day activities, it has to be investigated and treated. Women of any age can experience painful periods. Some women find periods are no longer painful after pregnancy and childbirth

Symptoms of dysmenorrhoea

  • Pain low in the abdomen that can spread to the lower back and legs

  • Pain that is gripping or experienced as a constant ache, or a combination of both.

  • The pain starts when the period starts, or earlier

  • The first 24 hours is the most painful

  • Clots are passed in the menstrual blood mostly pain is relieved after the passage of clots.

Dysmenorrhoea can be associated with:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Headache

  • Digestive problems

  • Fainting

  • Premenstrual symptoms, such as tender breasts

Types of Dysmenorrhoea:

  • Primary
  • Secondary

Causes of Primary dysmenorrhea

Normal menstruation that happens to be painful is known as primary dysmenorrhea. In primary dysmenorrhoea, it is thought that the muscles of the uterus contract harder than normal to excrete the thickened lining (endometrium). These contractions may also reduce blood flow to the uterus which makes the pain worse. The hormone-like compounds that prompt these contractions are prostaglandins. The reason for the increased prostaglandins is not known. This type of dysmenorrhea diminishes with age. It is mostly seen in the adolescent period due to low pain threshold, tension and anxiety.

Causes of secondary dysmenorrhoea

Ayurvedic view

According to Ayurveda, there is no pain without vata. Apan vayu is the subtype of vata dosha which is responsible for excretion of waste, cell division and any movement in the body. When there is vitiation of vata, instead of proper direction, apan vayu works in opposite direction. As reproductive organs are under influence of apan vayu, there is colicky pain and the discharge is thrown out with difficulty and becomes frothy. When the position of the uterus is distorted due to faulty positions and excessive coitus, the mouth of the uterus becomes curved and uterus falls back which is responsible for painful intercourse and painful menses. When along with vata, pitta is also vitiated then there are symptoms like chronic backache, painful menses, painful intercourse and periods with excessive bleeding; which can be corelated with PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease).

Treatment: Correction of Apana Vata vitiation is the main objective of the treatment. The site of Apana Vata is last part of the intestines. Etiological factors which lead to Apana Vata provocation need to be strictly avoided.

SNEHANA

  • Generally, snehana or oleation is done with medicated oil or ghee.
  • It may be administered orally (shatavari ghrit) or externally (sesame oil).
  • Local massage with sesame oil and hot water bag fomentation or nadi sweda are
  • helpful in painful condition.
  • Oleation help in pacifying vitiated Apana Vatha.

Virechana-Medicated purgation

  • Purgatives or laxatives are useful here for, example gandharva haritaki.

Basti

  • As basti is the primary treatment of vitiated apan vata, it is of prime importance during painful episodes as well as to prevent dysmenorrhea.
  • Enema with medicated oils is used to pacify Apana Vata.
  • Uttarbasti with bala taila, Dashamool ksheer basti and decoction basti, sahchar oil matrabasti are helpful.

Diet:

  • Take Fresh fruits and vegetables

How Ayurveda Helps Manage Infertility?
