Lifestyle Changes Can Help In Managing Portal Hypertension

The portal vein is responsible for carrying blood from your stomach, pancreas, and other digestive organs to your liver. You liver plays plays an imperative role in the circulation process. And, when the blood pressure in the portal vein is too high, it then results in portal hypertension.

Diagnosing this condition on time is important for timely treatment. Often, cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) is said to be the main cause of portal hypertension. 

Symptoms of portal hypertension include:

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding marked by black, tarry stools or blood in the stools, or vomiting of blood because of spontaneous rupture and hemorrhage from varices.
  • Accumulation of fluid in the abdomen.
  • Encephalopathy or confusion and poor memory caused by inefficient functioning of the liver.
  • Reduced levels of platelets, blood cells that help form blood clots, or white blood cells. 

Can lifestyle changes help in managing portal hypertension?
With healthy eating habits and adopting healthy practices you can not only manage but avoid portal hypertension. Follow these simple things to lead a healthier life:

  • Stop alcohol abuse and even smoking should be strictly avoided.
  • Eat a low-sodium diet. Ideally, not more than 2 grams of sodium per day is recommended. 
  • You will need to keep a check on your protein take, if confusion is a symptom of your condition. The best thing is to approach a dietitian, he/she will be able to prepare a proper meal plan for you.
  • Avoid taking over the counter medicines as some of them might worsen your liver disease. Take medications only after consulting your doctor.
