Lichen planus is a disease of the skin and/or mucous membranes that resembles lichen. The cause is unknown, but it is thought to be the result of an autoimmune process with an unknown initial trigger. There is no cure, but many different medications and procedures have been used to control the symptoms.

Lichen planus occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks cells of the skin or mucous membranes.
On skin, lichen planus appears as purplish, itchy, flat-topped bumps. On mucous membranes, such as in the mouth, it forms lacy, white patches, sometimes with painful sores.
Lichen planus usually goes away on its own. If symptoms are bothersome, topical creams and oral antihistamines may help.

The skin is the most exposed organ to irritants, and when the body recognizes something as foreign, the immune system kicks into action. It produces what is known as antibodies against the foreign bodies (antigens). However, in many situations, the body produces antibodies against its own cells or tissue or components, causing an autoimmune reaction. One such autoimmune reaction is lichen planus, which is a skin rash caused when the body produces antibodies against its own skin or mucous membran...more

Psoriasis and Lichen Planus are both autoimmune diseases. These occur when the body s immune system accidentally attacks healthy cells of the skin. Both the diseases are chronic and inflammatory medical conditions that manifest themselves on your skin, nails, hair, scalp and mucous membranes. Neither psoriasis nor lichen planus is contagious.
