Laser Hatching - Know In Depth About It!

Laser Hatching, also known as Laser-Assisted Hatching or LAH, is a technology that assists in attaching the embryo to the uterine walls of woman’s womb. Pregnancy is not possible if the human embryo does not hatch and attach itself to the uterine walls of the womb.

Zona Pellucida is a shell which surrounds the unfertilized egg. It is responsible for ensuring the admission of a single sperm and fertilization of the egg. When the egg gets fertilized, Zona Pellucida holds the embryo cells together. Zona Pellucida becomes harder as the division stages progress and within the In-Vitro Fertilization or IVF of the human embryo as well, probably caused by culture conditions of the fertilization. The egg removed out of its natural setting for Vitro fertilization and micro insemination makes the eggshell harden faster than through natural (Vivo) fertilization.

Women more than 37 years of age or women with excessive dosages of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) are more likely to yield eggs having a harder Zona Pellucida as compared to younger women. With a harder Zona Pellucida, eggs might not hatch or consume immoderate energy to get out and therefore not in a position to attach to the uterus of the women.

Egg hatching is essential for a woman to get pregnant. Laser-Assisted Hatching is a technology which helps the embryo to hatch out of Zona Pellucida and support the implantation within the uterine wall once the embryo is transferred. LAH or Laser-Assisted Hatching involves a greatly concentrated infrared laser beam to eliminate the Zona Pellucida with accurate increments.

Women in Need of Laser-Assisted Hatching -

Researches have shown that women who had previous unsuccessful In-Vitro Fertilization or IVF treatments have escalated chances of conceiving a baby using Laser-Assisted Hatching. Women over 37 years of age, who have a poor quality of the embryo with harder Zona Pellucida or frozen embryos or eggs and women with high FSH levels or low levels of Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) are recommended to undergo the Laser-Assisted Hatching.

Advantages of Laser-Assisted Hatching -

Though there are various techniques for assisted-hatching, Laser-Assisted Hatching is considered to be the most effective and safest of them all. The shell of the embryo is softened using a non-contact laser which means that the laser does not come in direct contact with the embryo. This technique protects the embryo from harmful chemicals which eases the stress during the procedure. This technique is less time consuming and also safeguards the embryo.

Take Away -

Laser-Assisted Hatching is one of the many assisted-hatching techniques. In this technique, a laser beam is used to open the Zona Pellucida to take the embryo out of it. This technique is faster than other techniques of assisted-hatching and therefore the embryo employs small time out of the incubator. One should use this technique only under a skilled embryology lab as not everyone is equipped to use this technology.

Laser Assisted Liposuction - How Can It Be Of Help?

Your genetic background influences where your body fat is stored. In case, your mother or father has fat stored in the abdomen, hips, waist or in the thigh, it is likely for you to develop deposits of fat in the same regions.

Circumstances of Genetic Fat

  • You may have a proper or a balanced BMI (body mass index) but still tend to develop bulges in areas, which are likely to make you look disproportional.
  • You may become obese by development of excess fat accumulation in the lower abdomen region, referred to as pannus. Extra fat may accumulate in your lower back and hips as well, which cannot be lost in spite of taking weight losing measures.

Liposuction to get rid of extra fat:

  • Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery that allows you to remove genetic fat or any extra fat from the body, in order to change the body's shape. Liposuction does not remove cellulites and tightening of loose skin cannot be done.
  • Liposuction removes excess fat from the body by suction. Small, narrow tubes with blunt tips known as the cannulae are inserted through incisions in the skin surface. The tubes are moved under the skin to target the suction of fat deposits.

There are several types of liposuction techniques:

  1. Tumescent Liposuction: In this form of liposuction, a wetting solution such as lidocaine with a local anesthetic is injected into the patient before surgery. This causes the shrinking or constriction of blood vessels due to which it allows liposuction to be performed while the patient is under local anaesthesia. Blood loss and post surgical pains are reduced.
  2. Suction Assisted Liposuction: This mode of liposuction also known as SAL is the most primary form of liposuction. It involves drawing out of fat using a vacuum.
  3. Power Assisted Liposuction: This liposuction technique called PAL in short involves the process of SAL with an extra tool for increasing the motion of the cannula. The process is faster.
  4. Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction: This process (UAL) involves the transmission of energy via a specialized hand piece for loosening and melting of fat. A greater volume of fat can be removed via UAL.
  5. VASER: It is a variation of the UAL method where an ultrasonic cannula with grooves helps in energy disruption to improve removal of fat.

Laser Assisted Liposuction:
LAL is a newly developed liposuction technology where a laser works like an ultrasound for disruption and removal of fat cells. This mode is more efficient and involves less trauma. Liposuction is an effective way to remove unwanted, genetic fat from your body, which may be harming your body image. However, liposuction is associated with severe side effects.

Laser - Know Utility Of It In Urology!

Urology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diseases and disorders of the male and female urinary system and the male reproductive organs. It is a specialized branch of medicine that has been in existence for a long time and has advanced in many ways over the past two decades, courtesy the introduction of the laser technology. Laser technology has helped urologists tremendously and they have been able to treat a number of patients through laser-assisted surgery. The use of lasers has made it possible for the urologists to utilize endoscopic instruments with small-diameter that allow them to see the minutest details of the urinary tract and treat the complex cases with ease.

  • Laser in bladder outlet obstruction: Bladder outlet obstruction is a blockage at the base of the bladder, which slows down or stops the flow of urine to the urethra, causing discomfort to the patient. Most men in their old age suffer from this problem and laser technology helps in conducting the surgical procedure to remove this blockage. It has been found that laser-assisted surgery results in lesser loss of blood as compared to open surgery. In some cases, blood transfusion after surgery is not required at all. Also, the hospital stay post operation is shorter, which ensures more comfort to the patient.
  • Laser in urolithiasis: The formation of kidney stones in the urinary tract is known as urolithiasis. Treatment of these conditions requires surgical intervention and it is nowadays done with the help of endoscopic intracorporeal laser lithotripsy. This technique uses strong beams of laser light to locate the stones, fragment them, and remove them from the urinary tract. The laser technology is safe and can be used in the case of pregnant women too. It can easily access the hard stones present in difficult locations.
  • Laser in benign prostatic hyperplasia: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) refers to the enlargement of the prostate. Some of the symptoms of this condition include a frequent urge to urinate, problems in urination, inability to urinate, and loss of bladder control. It can also lead to UTI (urinary tract infection) and stones. It can be treated with photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) in which the excess prostate tissues are melted away and the prostate shrinks back to its original state. Holmium laser ablation of the prostate (HoLAP) also does the same but holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) cuts the excess tissue blocking the urethra.
  • Laser in bladder cancer and urinary tract strictures: Bladder cancer refers to the abnormal growth of cells in the urinary tract and this is mostly found in the form of tumors. The tumors can be cancerous and transurethral bladder tumor resection (TURBT) laser technology can help in diagnosis, staging, as well as the treatment of malignant tumors. It makes use of cystoscope to remove the tumor. In the case of urinary tract strictures, the urethra becomes narrow, hindering the passage of urine. It can be caused due to an infection or injury. With endoscopic urethrotomy and usage of the cystoscope, the urologist removes the stricture or makes it evaporate with the help of a laser.

Laser technology is of immense value to urologists and offers many advantages to the patients as well. It is more comfortable and with more advances being made in this field, the future looks even brighter for the doctors as well as patients.
