Hi lybrate-user, gynecomastia, the appearance of large male breasts, generally results from an imbalance of the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone. This can be the results of life changes, such as hitting puberty or middle-age, prescription medications, drug use, or illness. Please mention your son's height and weight also.

In the majority of cases, gynecomastia goes on its own and it does not require any treatment. There are, however, surgery options available if the symptoms become severe. Surgery includes liposuction (breast fat is removed without removing the breast gland tissue), and mastectomy (breast gland tissue is removed by making small incisions. This involves less recovery time).

Generally, gynecomastia does not need any medical attention as it usually goes away on its own. The male breasts become normal again within a few months to a couple of years. If it becomes severe, your doctor will prescribe you medicines. There are also surgeries to reduce the size of the breast. Surgery options include: 1) liposuction- this helps in removing the extra fat from the breast but not the breast gland tissue. 2) mastectomy- the surgery is performed to remove the breast gland tissue. ...more

No, gynecomastia usually is not a condition with serious complications. It is noncancerous. However, it becomes tough to live with it as men and boys may feel embarrassed while staying in the group of people. There might be pain in the breasts and nipples become sensitive when it rubs against clothes.
