Kidney Stones - What Is The Best Possible Way It Can Be Treated?

Kidney stones are often small enough and pass through urine without much bother. Most kidney stones are smaller than 4 mm in diameter. Having said this, even the smallest of kidney stones can be really painful until they pass through urine. It typically takes a couple of days for the body to get rid of it. While medication and self-care are the foremost options, there are a range of other options as well available for treating kidney stones.

Admission to a Hospital

You must get admitted to a hospital if the stone moves to the ureter, thereby resulting in severe pain. Typically kidney stones which are more than 6 mms in diameter need to be surgically removed through procedures such as ureteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), open surgery and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). A doctor takes a call on any of the above procedure if:

  1. The patient is inching towards a kidney failure.

  2. The pain doesn’t go away even after taking pain killers.

  3. If the patient is pregnant.

  4. If the patient is more than 60 years.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)-

ESWL is one of the simple and most preferred stone removing procedures. It involves the usage of ultrasound shock waves to break the bigger stones into smaller ones. The latter is then passed through urine. A patient is given a few painkillers since this mode of treatment could be a little uncomfortable. A patient might need multiple ESWLs to successfully get rid of all the stones.

Ureteroscopy:

If a stone gets stuck in the ureter, a medical procedure known as the ureteroscopy is performed. In this procedure, a thin telescope is passed through the urethra and bladder to the ureter. Either a second instrument is used or the telescope itself has laser energy to break the bigger stone into smaller ones. This procedure is ideal for stones that have a diameter more than 15 mm.

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)

PCNL is an alternative to ESWL for removing big stones. This procedure involves the usage of nephroscope that is routed into the kidney through a small incision made behind the back of the patient. This procedure requires general anesthesia and is effective for breaking stones that have a diameter of 20 mm or more. It has a success rate of 86%.

Open Surgery:

This is one of the older methods to eradicate kidney stones. Unless the stone size is abnormally large and other procedures cannot be performed, open surgery is generally avoided. An open surgery involves making an incision and getting access to the ureter and the kidney. The surgeon then removes the stone from the kidney. This procedure requires general anesthesia and the patient needs to be under observation for at least 24 hours, post surgery.

Kidney Stones - Can Ayurveda Tackle Them?

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that focuses on improving your overall well-being, rather than just focusing on the symptoms of the disease. Being a complete natural based method, it has no side effects. Ayurvedic remedies for kidney stones emphasize on improving your lifestyle and diet to keep the energy balance in your body.

The causes of kidney stones range from factors such as an imbalanced diet, sedentary lifestyle and spicy food. Less water consumption is also a major cause of kidney stones. These factors cause problems in the various doshas in the human body, leading to diseases. It leads to toxin formation in the body called ama. These toxins trickle down to the urinary tract, causing crystals to form, thus leading to kidney stones.

Ayurvedic remedies consist of using diuretic herbs to dissolve the stones. Once the stones are dissolved, it is then recommended to use various cleansing techniques such as Panchakarma, which helps in strengthening the body. It is recommended to drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water daily and urinate whenever the urge occurs.

If the bladder stores the urine for a long time, then it leads to kidney stones. You need to cut down on foods that contain salt in excess. Add more green vegetables to your diet as they provide the body with essential nutrients such as calcium.

A comprehensive list of the changes you should make are:

1. Avoid eating dry and heavy foods
2. Limit consumption of coffee, tea, pickle based foods and cold drinks
3. Restrict consumption of non-vegetarian foods such as meat and poultry
4. Drink adequate water regularly
5. Consume parboiled rice, brown rice and ginger
6. Consume lots of fruit juices, soup and water
7. Increase water consumption during the summer months
8. Don’t suppress the urge to urinate

Some herbal remedies to control kidney stones are combining “mehendi” with water to form a decoction and then consuming it. Increase consumption of horse-gram as it decreases risk of kidney stones. Make sure you exercise on a regular basis as it improves your overall well-being and keeps you healthy.

Recurrent Kidney Stones - How To Avert Them?

Recurrent Kidney Stones - How To Avert Them?

Kidney stones are salt and mineral deposits that accumulate inside the kidneys. Your treatment may depend on the severity of your condition; ranging from medications to surgery. Once you have had kidney stones, there is an increased chance of you experiencing the problem again. Preventive measures can help in reducing your risk of kidney stones.

Prevention of kidney stones
Medical recommendations about preventive measures can help you keep kidney stones at bay. Here are top tips to prevent recurring kidney stones.

  1. Hydrate Well: Drinking sufficient water is an extremely important kidney stone preventive measure. The amount of urine your body produces depends on your consumption of water and other liquids. If you exercise quite often or live in a place with a hot or arid climate, you may further need to increase your water intake. Ideally, drink enough water for your body to produce 2 to 2.5 litres of urine every day. You can also include lemon juice mixed with water or fresh orange juice in your diet. These juices contain citrate, which can prevent the formation of kidney stones.
  2. Take Dietary Precautions: Altering your diet may be necessary to prevent recurring kidney stones.
    • Oxalate is a naturally-occurring compound in foods, which may bind with calcium to form kidney stones. To prevent kidney stones, you may need to stop or limit the intake of foods high in oxalate, such as beets, soy products, spinach, sweet potatoes, rhubarb, peanuts etc.
    • However, you don’t need to cut calcium from your diet. In fact, if you eat calcium and oxalate foods at the same time, you can further reduce your risk of kidney stones. Calcium binds with oxalate inside the digestive track, thereby, lowering the chances of kidney stone formation. Though use calcium supplements only as per your doctor’s recommendations.
    • Reduce your intake of salt. Excessive salt can increase the amount of calcium in urine and form kidney stones.
    • Eat animal protein in moderation as meat is acidic in nature, as too much uric acid in urine can cause both uric acid stones and calcium oxalate ones.
    • Foods and drinks high in sugar can also increase uric acid in urine. So, it is better to limit their intake if you have a history of kidney stones.
  3. Take Medications: If you are a kidney stone patient, you also need to take medications to prevent recurrence of the problem. Without medicine use, the risk of kidney stones in patients may increase.

Once you have had kidney stones, you need to take caution for life. Without proper medicines and diet precautions, not only you increase your risk of kidney stones but also of other kidney diseases. Heed the recommendations of your doctor or consult with a good nephrologist.

Kidney Stones - How Can Homeopathy Handle It?

Stones in the urinary system are referred as 'Renal Calculi'. These kidney stones are not exactly stones, but are actually hard deposits of minerals that can form anywhere within the urinary tract - kidney or the bladder. There are many conventional forms of treatment available to eradicate a stone, but Homeopathy medicines offer a much more simpler and efficient way of taking care of the kidney stones. Let us have a look at how effective these are.

Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are known to form when the urine becomes too concentrated. The primary reason for such a condition could be dehydration. Kidney stones are extremely painful. Pain can be felt in the lower back or, the lower abdomen. There can be a heaviness in the urinary tract often followed by bleeding. It also changes the colour of the urine to a pinkish brown. The patient may also experience nausea and vomiting.

What causes kidney stones?
As stated earlier, lack of water can be a major reason for the formation of stones. The chances of kidney stone reoccurring in a person multiplies several times if a person is not in the habit of drinking water. There are also a few food products that are high in salt that may help in the formation of stones. In conventional medications, there is no foolproof method to dissolve the stone and it often involves surgery. The operation has to be followed by months of post-operative recuperation that can be physically daunting for the patient. Also, there are chances that the stones can reoccur at any point in time. This is where homeopathy differs drastically from conventional methods.

How does homeopathy help in renal calculi?
The biggest advantage of using homeopathy is that it treats the body as the whole. The physician would understand the patient first before imparting the treatment. The latter’s lifestyle, his food habits and his stress factors are discussed in detail to get the complete picture of the type of medications to give. The other biggest advantage of using homeopathy is that there is no surgery involved. They treat the symptoms by naturally dissolving the stones, and the chances of reoccurrence are next to nil. There are several homeopathic medicines for different types of stones. There are even different types of medicinal products for left side kidney stone, and right side one. A type of medicine - Canthari, is widely used for treating kidney stones with a burning sensation. The homeopathy physician would be in a better position to diagnose once the causes are identified. However, care should be taken that the medicines should be taken only in the prescribed format and as per the guidance of the physician.

Homeopathy is safe
Of all the important functionalities of homeopathy, the biggest is undoubtedly that it does not cause any side effects and are very effective. Since it treats the condition and symptoms from within, the chances of getting a stone in the urinary tracts are minuscule when using homeopathy medicine.

Green Tea For Kidney - Is Green Tea Good For Kidneys?

Nowadays green tea has become highly popular among people not only because of its nutrients but also it’s capacity to fight chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Surprisingly green tea also protects the progression of kidney disease. If a moderated amount of green tea is consumed on a regular basis then it is helpful for the people suffering from any kidney problem.

Green tea extracts are proven to solve kidney problems and give life extension by preventing kidney damage. There are various benefits of drinking green tea such as antioxidants, catechins, and ECGC which are known for showing beneficial effects on the problems related to kidney.

Is green tea good for the kidney?

It has been investigated that green tea the effects of antioxidants mainly polyphenol present in green tea prevent hyperuricemia which is responsible for chronic kidney disease and preglomerular arteriopathy. The progression of kidney disease is also stopped with the help of green tea as it activates the Jagged1/Notch1-STAT3 pathway.

Green tea also has a high level of epigallocatechin gallate which also creates a hindrance in the formation of kidney stones. Doctors also recommend green tea to prevent kidney damage and end-stage renal failure.

Green tea contains ECG (Epicatechin gallate). A potent anti-oxidant preventing kidney damage. It also reduces inflammation and cell death. Thus proves to be a potent anti-cancer therapy. Green tea also prevents oxidative stress caused during malaria infection that leads to impaired renal function, which is a common reason for death among malarial patients.

Green Tea for Kidney Stones:

  • Green tea has been proven effective for kidney stones and green tea extracts help to prevent its formation. If you already have stones in your kidney then also green tea is helpful as it also helps in the removal of stones.
  • The green tea extracts bond itself with calcium oxalate thus enabling crystals to take different shapes and also prevents them from pilling up together in the kidney to form stones.
  • According to research, green tea extracts make calcium oxalate flatter thus forming flat stones, which are not strong and breakdown easily.

Is green tea good for dialysis patients?

As it is well known that green tea consists of antioxidants and if 1 decaffeinated green tea capsule is taken by the patient going through dialysis then it can help to improve many things which include:

  • Green tea capsules are helpful if consumed regularly for 6 months. It works by reducing inflammation and also lowers down the oxidative stress.
  • Green tea also shows a positive impact on the patients going through atherosclerotic dialysis.
  • Green tea also helps to improve certain things regarding kidney disease which include blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, creatinine levels, and glucose excretion.

Green Tea Side Effects on Kidneys

Green tea can be possibly unsafe if it is consumed in a high quantity that is 7-8 cups a day because it also contains caffeine, which is not good for kidney diseases but there are very few instances of this.

If green tea is taken in larger quantity then it may disrupt kidney function by diminishing anti-oxidant enzymes and expression of heat-shock proteins. This happens due to the toxicity of polyphenols present in green tea.

People suffering from high blood pressure should consume green tea in less quantity due to the presence of caffeine in it. As it enhances the chances of the risk of kidney disease and even declines the rate of kidney functions. Thus leads to a sudden increase in blood pressure.

Hence, green tea has many potential benefits and can also be consumed during kidney problems. But if you have any doubts or you face any complication then you can consult your healthcare expert and can know more about it.

Urinary Stones - Can Homeopathy Help?

Many theories and as many reasons are given, but in most of the cases, cause of stone formation in the kidneys is not clear. Biochemical dysfunction seems to be the only possible explanation. Stones generally develop very slowly.

The tendency to stone formation may be hereditary. Stones may vary in size from sand particles to large stone. Urinary stones may be present for many years and may give rise to no symptoms. When a stone obstructs the urinary passage, mild pain to severe renal colic occurs. There may be restlessness, sweating, pallor, vomiting, frequent urination, blood in urine etc during pain. Attack of pain may last few hours to few days, varying in severity time to time. In many cases, urinary infection is a common occurrence.

Homeopathic Approach

Homeopathic treatment plan comprises of:

  1. Ultrasonography at regular interval of three to four months to monitor
    • The size of the stone
    • Movement of the stone along the urinary passage.
  2. Kidney function tests should be done to evaluate the function of kidneys.
  3. Urine examination may be helpful to treat the accompanying urinary infections.
  4. Parathyroid hormone and serum calcium level should be considered if the stone formation is recurrent.
  5. It is a well-known fact that some stones can pass naturally. But often they may cause severe pain and at times obstruction. But with homeopathic treatment, even moderate-sized stone can pass absolutely painlessly.
  6. Though the use of painkillers and antispasmodics can relieve the pain and spasm, but in the process can actually hamper or suspend the onward and outward movement of the stone. With homeopathic treatment, body's natural reactions are stimulated that helps throw out the stone without much discomfort.
  7. At times, it is seen that with homeopathic treatment stones gradually dissolve into sand particles and get eliminated from the urinary system without being aware of it. This can be monitored by subsequent Ultrasonograms watching the gradual reduction in the size of the stones.
  8. As stone formation is just a bye-product of body's biochemical dysfunction at deeper levels, only removal of the stone by natural or surgical means is not enough. Homeopathic treatment not only removes the stone, but can also modify the tendency to form stones by improving body's natural balance in general, and biochemical dysfunction in particular.
  9. In bilateral, multiple and recurrent stones, constitutional homeopathic treatment is far-more superior than surgery or any other therapy as it has the potential to help the body, not only throw the stone out but also improve the biochemical dysfunction to check the recurrence of stone formation.
  10. Surgery can be helpful only when the size of the stone is very large, causing damage to kidney by back- pressure. Even then, homeopathic treatment is of significant importance to improve the basic biochemical defects.
  11. Constitutional Homeopathic treatment can also help avert the complication of surgery. With constitutional homeopathic treatment, accompanying urinary infections are also relieved.
  12. AND, the added advantage is that with constitutional homeopathic treatment, general health also improves.

Dietary Restrictions:

  • Large number of dietary "take and avoid" is known to the masses, but their role is doubtful. With good constitutional homeopathic treatment and proper monitoring by ultrasonography, dietary restrictions are not mandatory.
  • Increased amounts of fluid intake are advisable.

Kidney Stone - Its Symptoms & Prevention Tips!

The pair of kidneys that human beings have forms an important part in the excretory system. They perform specific and important functions. They excrete urine as well as help in eliminating the toxins which accumulate in the body. Kidney stones occur when the minerals present in the urine without being discharged, keep on accumulating. This gives rise to an extremely painful and uncomfortable situation. Though sometimes the situation gets revoked all by itself, many times it requires medical intervention. Some of the symptoms of kidney stones are-

1.  Excruciating pain in the back
2.  Pain while urinating
3.  Tendencies to vomit
4.  Dizziness
5.  Fever

However, there are several preventive measures which you can undertake in order to avert the situation. Some of them are-

1.  Drink lots of water
Kidney stone is one of those rare conditions that once occurred, always carry the latent threat of recurring again. Therefore drinking water, in large quantities becomes essential. The more you drink water, the more frequently you would urinate, thereby curbing the chances of the minerals settling in the kidneys.

2.  Avoid certain food
Food like beets, spinach, those which are replete with calcium oxalate should be avoided in order to minimize chances of having kidney stones.

3.  Change your diet
If you are trying to avoid the eventuality of developing kidney stones, it is imperative that you change your diet a bit. It is recommended that you exclude animal protein as much as possible and assiduously avoid the intake of salt as much as possible.

4.  Take less calcium supplements
Calcium generally is considered a nemesis to your kidneys and is prescribed by doctors to be avoided. However recent research has thwarted this claim. Calcium does not pose a threat to kidneys. However calcium supplements definitely do and therefore should be avoided.
