For people who need to keep an eye on their blood sugar level, a glucose meter is a handy thing to keep around. There are many different types of glucose meters available with continuous glucose monitor being one of them. Unlike other glucose monitoring devices that merely detect the amount of glucose present in your system, a continuous glucose monitoring device also detects trends and patterns thus, gives your doctor a more comprehensive picture of your condition.

Thanks for the query.
You are right about low insulin production in diabetes. There are usually two main types of diabetes - T1 DM where there is totally No Insulin production. This happens due to destruction of beta cells present in pancreas, due to an autoimmune process. Type 2, which more common variery is due either to lack of insulin or increased resistance to its action, mainly due to increased fat and inactivity.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
T2 diabetes is usually treated with oral drugs initially. In some cases if blood glucose control is not adequate, then Insulin injections are added. So there are many patients who are given both oral tablets and insulin to achieve proper control of blood glucose. Thanks.

Lantus insulin is long acting insulin. If patients fasting/PP Sugars are not under control and and Hba1c is persistently above 8 % then some times it is advisable to go for premix insulin like humalog + NPH insulin for better glycemic control and maybe twice in a day injections. If you have recent post heart bypass surgery then it is very important to maintain Hba1c below 7%.
