Abdominal Pain & When To Consult A Doctor

Abdominal pain can be triggered by a number of factors. Sometimes, it's mild enough to be overlooked while at others, the pain can be debilitating. Most abdominal problems start with the same symptoms and hence the cause of this pain can be a little difficult to pin point. In many cases, the location of the pain can help understand the factors that are triggering it.

  • Generalized pain can be simply be triggered by indigestion. On the other hand, it could also be a symptom of a number of illnesses like irritable bowel syndrome, appendicitis, viral gastroenteritis and intestinal obstructions etc. However, the former are more common. This type of pain resolves itself without medical intervention.
  • In other cases, abdominal pain can be localized to the upper or lower abdomen on the right or left side or in the centre of the abdomen. This sort of pain is usually sporadic and comes and goes with great intensity. In most cases, this sort of pain is a symptom of a serious problem and should not be ignored. One of the most common examples of localized abdominal pain is the pain caused by appendicitis in its later stages. Severe pain that is located just above the centre of the belly button could be a sign of pancreatitis. A burning sensation and severe cramps in the center of the stomach could point towards stomach ulcers that could cause perforations if left untreated. Other causes for this type of pain include endometriosis, ovarian cysts, angina, kidney infections and a spleen infection.
  • Mild stomach pain whether localized or general can be relieved using home remedies and does not often require medication. However, if the pain is severe or if it comes on suddenly, you must immediately consult a doctor. Another reason to consult a doctor is if the pain persists for more than 24 hours. If the pain is accompanied by black or bloody stools or vomiting and nausea, do not ignore it. Black stools are often an indicator of the presence of blood in the digestive tract. Abdominal pain that worsens with movement or is tender to touch is also something that should be shown to a doctor. Other reasons to consult a doctor are abdominal pain with persistent vomiting following meals and unexplained weight loss and a loss of appetite.

Bloating: The Causes & Solutions

Bloating: The Causes & Solutions

Bloating isn't a medical condition. It doesn't necessarily mean that a person has eaten too much. It can be a case of eating wrong food which has not been digested by the body. Bloating occurs when air and water get trapped inside the stomach or intestine. As a result, the stomach gets swollen well past its normal level. (Learn more about stomach problem)

Culprits of bloating:Bloating can result from a number of cases. Fatty or junk foods are one of the biggest culprits of bloating. It hinders the digestion process and doesn't let the stomach empty on time. Carbohydrates too can cause bloating. Even carbonated drinks can play spoilsport. It creates bubbles in the stomach leading to indigestion and bloating. Some food items related to gas include cauliflower, lettuce, hard candy, beans, Brussels sprouts, broccoli etc. Apart from this, consumption of excessive junk food and soft drinks can lead to bloating.

Steps to avoid bloating: The best way to avoid bloating is to refrain from bloat causing foods as mentioned earlier. If you wear dentures (know more about dentures), it should be ensured that it fits properly. There are instances when excess air gets inside the stomach due to an improper fixture of denture leading to bloating. Eating or drinking slowly is another good way of staying away from bloating. When you eat slowly, there are fewer chances of extra air getting inside the stomach. In the case of beverage consumption, avoiding the straw is a good idea. This way the unwanted air cannot make their way inside the tummy and play foul.

Taking a small walk after every meal is another good way of staying away from bloating. This way the gas inside the tummy cannot rise above the surface. The practice of calming technique such as yoga, deep breathing and meditation also goes a long way in giving relief from bloating.

Some home remedies to get rid of bloating include:

  • A cup of ginger, lemon and honey in a cup of hot water once everyday
  • 1 cup of herbal peppermint tea freshly prepared in boiled water
  • In the case of regular stomach bloating, intake of one caraway seed on a daily basis fetches immediate results
  • Consumption of a cup of baked pumpkin twice a week
  • Consumption of warm lemon water before you start your day is another good way of keeping bloating at bay.

Bloating can also be a symptom of other intestinal related problems as well. If the general method of control and measured diet doesn't suffice, it is time to visit a doctor to find the underlying cause of your problem. Doctors perform a series of tests to understand the problem and prescribe the required medicine to control or cure the problem.

Treating Stomach Aches and Pains in Kids

Stomach aches and pains are common in babies, infants and parents are always in search of quick fixer to help their little ones get a relief instantly. Though instant reliefs do not come always, and there are colicky infants and babies with common stomach problems, yet some remedies and treatments always help.

Stomach pain in older kids:
The common home remedies in not so serious pains are as follows:

  • Let the child rest and lie down. This may help to ease the pain in 20-30 minutes.
  • Give the child some liquid to drink, which is soothing, like light tea, soup, water or diluted fruit juice.
  • Let the child go to the toilet and encourage him or her to pass stool. This may help ease off the pain sooner.
  • Avoid any bulk food intake in one meal and divide it into smaller meals through the day until symptoms go away.
  • Don't give oily and fried food. Give easy to digest food, mostly boiled or light fried.
  • Avoid giving a medicine without medical advice.

These steps generally help and the pain goes away without going to a doctor immediately. If the pain is severe and is persistent in any one part of the abdomen, then it may require immediate medical attention. Common causes may be appendicitis or gall stone problem or may be a case of acute jaundice, diarrhoea, food poison, etc. Pain on pressing one part of the belly, or high body temperature with pain, and serious vomiting are serious symptoms which you must not ignore and take the kid immediately to a medical centre or doctor.

Stomach pain in infants:
Stomach pains in infants are caused due to extra air entering the stomach while feeding. This can be avoided by burping the baby manually. There are a few burping techniques which your paediatrician and baby care giver will show you.

If you are with a colicky baby, then you would try administering the baby's nursing bottle first. There are new age nursing bottle designs, which keep off extra air from entering the stomach. The extra air mainly causes the stomach pain, and therefore, the bottle which prevents mixing of air with milk or water keeps the baby safe from colicky pains. Keep baby colic pain syrups at home ready, and give the baby a dose as and when required. It will eventually give the pain a relief.

4 Natural Ways To Treat Tummy Aches In Children!

4 Natural Ways To Treat Tummy Aches In Children!

Stomach aches or abdominal pains are one of the most frequently reported health complaints faced by children. Children below the age of twelve are known to suffer from recurrent stomach pain. While pains such as these lead to momentary discomfiture, they also lay the path for graver worries if neglected for too long. Your child may feel sick and bunk school for two days; rest and home care can restore his or her health, but that in no way, is the best suited way of dealing with the situation. If tummy aches resurface over a certain period of time, parents should be cautious enough to look for the root cause and should try to eliminate it accordingly.

Widely noticed causes of stomach aches in children:

  1. Unhygienic food can affect the child’s digestive system.
  2. Intolerance to a certain food item should not be overlooked.
  3. Perpetual anxiety can make the tummy twist and turn.
  4. Urinary Tract Infections can also lead to acute abdominal pain.
  5. Serious factors such as gallstones or appendicitis could also be present. Immediate expert consultation is advised in such a case.
  6. Caffeine and packaged soft drinks can be harmful.
  7. Butter, ghee and other greasy products can trigger tummy aches.

Ways to treat tummy aches in children:

  1. Keep children away from gas producing food items: Food that is hard to digest should be avoided. Lentil soup or dal should only be consumed in limited amounts to prevent the formation of gas. Don’t let your child have too many nuts regularly.
  2. Keep them hydrated: Fluid intake should be monitored. A child should drink at least six to seven glasses of water per day. Fruit juices or soups can also be given to them alongside main meals. This helps digestion.
  3. Do not stack up food in one go: Eating a lot in one meal is a bad way of satisfying hunger. Have smaller meals in more numbers. Six to eight meals will keep your child full and will also eliminate chances of acid reflux which happens either due to an empty stomach or too much piling up of greasy food.
  4. Timely check - up with the doctor: If tummy aches refuse to go away, take your child to a doctor for a thorough check- up. Administer medicines as prescribed by the physician. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

My friend is tensed these days. Due to work pressure and personal problems. He is feeling some weakness and stomach irritation and anxiety. Can this turn out to be worrisome or just home remedies will do?

When certain negative emotions are suppressed, they get internalised and start affecting our body. I think this is what is happening to your friend and that is why he is having stomach irritation and weakness, he is under stress and have a few suppressed emotions. Encourage him to share and discuss his worries/problems with you or any one else whom he trusts. He needs a healthy outlet for his emotions. By talking to others, his problems may not be resolved, but he will get a different perspective, he will know a few other options to handle his issues and most importantly, he will be relieved of his troblesome thoughts.

My wife is in her fourth month of pregnancy. She often vomits whatever she eats or drinks. Moreover she is having continuous stomach pain also. Kindly suggest any home remedy to get rid off this or to control this?

Hi Jitendra. Try taking a very simple diet without oils and spices. Simple food like dahlia, khichdi, curd, cucumbers etc should decrease the problem. Also you can try taking juice of 1/2lemon with a pinch of salt undiluted twice a day before meals. Research even indicates taking ginger juice to effectively decrease the vomiting. But i see you have only tried taking Raciper medicine. Try taking Dominate or ondem tablets. They will surely give you relief. Hope you find this helpful. All the best

Acidity - Causes & Remedies
Hello!

I am Dr. Malvika Pandey. Ayurveda doctor. Working in Bnchy Wellness Medispa.

Here I am to discuss something about a very common health problem that is acidity. In Ayurveda, this is understood as Amlipitam. This diseases is very common in today s generation because of the common issues which are propounding it lari vari shari kari. Acidity is due to more excess, excess of acid production in gastrointestinal tract overs. Normally the pH of stomach remains acidic. But in hyper acidic condition it gets escalated. For this it results in the conditions like heartburns, dyspepsia, belching and sometime bloating of stomach. Which can be easily seen and felt by the patient as symptoms and doctor can examine in the form of science.

The basic reasons for acidity is stressful conditions, we are living in, and insufficient sleeps, irregular way of taking meals. And also the suppression of our urges. These all conditions lead to aggravation of dosha, basically the pita dosha. And the stomach which is basically concern with the pita dosha is affected the most. And also the first part of intestine that is the duodenum which is very much involved in this. And the basic symptoms which occur in this diseases are belching. Heart burn, bloating heaviness of the stomach itching. Headache and even in the later stages it can seen as ulceration.

So how can we cure this disease? The thing which is very important in Ayurveda is prevention is better than cure. So better to prevent it. Better to get into the things which can check the excess of pita dosha which is known as the pit prokap ahar vehar. We should check it on. For this in Ayurveda we are getting two ways. It can be saan shodhan chikatsha, it can be sanshaman chikatsha. In sanshaman chikatsha which is basically concerned with suppression of the aggravated doshas. In this the pit shamak oshadi like, the yashti madhu, the shadang pani of course they are included in the diet of the patient. And vehara the things which areegated pita like kordha, kama. All the thing which increases the pita should be contained. And in the saan shodhan chikatsha, we do the eradication of dosha. In sanshaman, we suppress the dosha. In saan shodhan we eradicate the dosha out from the body by the usage of panchakarma chikatsha. Which is compressing of sneehan sheden waman geychannan basti.

For this pit dosha. It is basically concerned with the verachan chikatsha. In this the proper procedure of sneehan sheden. Then vaman is given to the patient. Vaman is, means incorporated. And later on lastly the verachan chikatsha is done. It is best for the pita shaman.

Stones: Remedies To Dissolve Kidney Stones
I am Dr Waheed Zaman principal consultant neurology and renal transplant Max Shalimar Bagh and Max Pitampura. I have got clinic in Rohini Sector 13 that is Care Multispeciality Clinic and we are dealing complete urology specially pertaining to all urology problems specially stone disease, prostate problem then genitals urinary tract, cancers we are dealing, then infertility and about the importance and male infertility specially we are doing in our centres and my main topic of interest is renal transplant.

I have got experience of more than 1000 transplant and I am very much interested and I helped in people, I have given many lectures for cadaveric transplant and we try to promote it. But today I am discussing on different topics that is stone disease, this is very common in India, especially in North India. We get large number of kidney stone patient they usually present with the brain in emergency with a flying plane, radiating down, blood in urine and majority of the times in emergency severe colic pain. So immediately we give pain Killers, we settle this patient and we ask for ultrasound, urine test and kidney function test. On Ultrasound majority of the stones can be detected or indirect evidences maybe there are life dilatation of the kidney, kidney me sujan ho sakta hai or yadi doubt ho toh definitely hum log CT-SCAN karate hain, plain CT-SCAN se 99% stone detect kiya Ja sakta hai. Ek bar stone detect hua phir uske size pe cocern hota hai, jaise general public mein thinking hoti hai ki sab stone nikal jate hain dawai se ya pani se, yeh sahi nahi hai yadi aap dekhenge ki char millimeter se kam size ke jo stone hote hain almost 80 to 90% nikal sakte hain medicine pani se, mainly pani se aap nariyal pani le, pani piye kafi aur nimbu pani, shikanji yeh 3 apne indian drinks jo hain woh best drinks maane jaate hain, wo chote stone ko aaram se flush kar deta hai. 4 se 7 millimeter ke jo stone hote hain almost 50-50 chance hota hai nikalne ka, 7 millimeter se 10 millimeter ka jo stone hota hai around 10 to 20% chance hai or 8 centimetres se jayada 10 percemt se bhi kum chance hota hai ki nikale, par hamare log jayadatar yehi galat dharna bani rehti hai ki nai medicine se sab nikal jayega even ek-daid centimetre ka stone nikal jayega, yeh commonly hamhe OPD main kuch log puchte bhi hain log, sir aap toh medicine do bade se bade stone mein aur galado usko. Aise stone bahut kum hai jo medicine se galte hain specific uric acid stone wagairah hote hain, jo aur excess pani peene se chhote stone to niklenge hee, definitely. Ab ek baar yadi diagnosis ho gaya ki stone kis level pe hai kidney mein kya changes ho rahi hai yadi back pressure changes jyada hai kidney even phat jati hai itna back pressure rehta hai, infection ho jata hai, bleeding hoti hai, toh aise condition bukhar rehta hai infection ki wajah se, toh hum patient ko salah dete hain ki better hai aap operation ki ke liye jaiye aur wait mat kariye. Kyunki yadi do hafte se jyada yadi kidney block rehti hai stone ki wajah se toh reversible kidney damage start ho jata hai. So we have to be very careful, very judicious, listen to your doctor and there are many myths associated with the kidney stone disease, so try to be more judicious. Kidney stone nikalne ki kai padhatian aajkal adhunik lithotripsy ho sakti hai par ab utni popular nahi rahi hai, uske alawa ureteroscopy hai jisse ureter ke stone nikale ja sakta hain. Kidney stone hum log keyhole surgery se karte hain PCNL, mini PCNL techniques hain, aur aaj kal jo latest aagaya RIRS, that is Retrograde Internal Surgery, aaram se hum log peshab ke raste se hi bahut hi patle sukshm yantra aagye hain jisko flexible urteroscope bolte hain, woh peshab ke raste se bladder hote huye ureter or wahan se kidney per pahunchte hain, aur aise even ded-do centimetre ke stone hum log laser se tod sakte hain, aur ekdum dhul ke kann jaise ho jate hain aur woh peshab ke sath nikal jate hain. Bade kann hum log retreat karte hain, uska stone analysis karte hain aur based on that hum log ye plan karte hain ki aage kya treatment diya jaye. So iska follow-up bahut zaroori hai ek baar kisi ko stone banna hai to 70% chance hai ki dubara banega apna lifestyle change kijiye, salt kam le, fast food kam kare, pepsi wagera bilkul minimum karde, it is full of obsolete chai kam kare, coffee kam kare, chocolate band kare aur pani jyada piyen din mein barah se pandrah glass pani peena chahiye, shkanji piye, ek nimbu daily piye, shikanji uska istemal kare uske alawah anaras hai, kele hain inka sevan kare, karele ki sabji zaroor le isse kidney swasth rehti hai, kuch fruits hain jaise especially maine bataya banana and pineapple yeh kafi useful hota hai, jo sabjiya kam leni hai umne bhindi hai, baingun hai, gobhi, palak inka kam kare istemal band nahi karna hai. Sabse badi dawa pani hai, pani piye one lemon day keeps the stone away , aur iska sahi upchar kare otherwise kidney stone may lead to kidney failure even. So aap bade sachet rahey issme, doctor ki sune mein baar baar request karta hoon, hum log daily yrh a problem face karte hain hum log sahi salah denge aapko koi misguide nahi karta hai, yddi kidney damage ho raha hai toh definitely intervene hona chahiye otherwise medical management bhi possible hai chote stone ke liye.

Dhanyavad.

Increased Anxiety In Expectant Parents || Causes & Remedies
Hello friends!

I am Dr Nisha Agarwal working as Head of the department in obstetrics and gynaecology at VPS Rockland Hospital, Manesar. As an obstetrician, I routinely treat pregnant ladies.

In last few years I have realised that there is a lot of increase in the anxiety of expecting parents, what about my pregnancy what about medical complications, whether it would be a vaginal delivery or caesarean sections and lot many more. I don't blame them, actually we are living in a digitalised where lots of information is available and we read them and interpret them accordingly. I feel most of us have actually forgotten the true meaning of pregnancy and childbirth, to relieve all this anxiety and to make them independent to tackle are their delivery and pregnancy related issues I teach birth prep classes to my parents. In these classes, I teach them about birth Psychology, after attending these classes expecting parents especially husbands they understand their rule during these 9 months and they are able to make this beautiful journey, as a smooth and peaceful as it should be. As a gynecologist I come across problems like menstrual disorders, ovarian cyst, uterine fibroids and many more, many of times we need to do surgical procedures for these kinds of problems. Here I would like to say the progress in medical science is a boon to humanity and especially for women. Gone are the days when you have to be at the month of open surgery, these days we do all gynaecological procedures by a laparoscopic technique. We all know in laparoscopy we do not cut open your abdomen in fact, we made two or three small holes through which we pass our instruments and complete the procedures via these pores only. In the laparoscopy we get a very magnifying view because of which the injury to adjacent discharge is very much reduced, blood loss is quite minimised and in all these ultimately lead to very short stay in the hospital, the post of pain is very less and the recovery is very fast and you can resume your routine activities very soon. In fact, in few surgeries, we do it as a day care procedures, where we admit you and discharge on the same day and you can resume your all routine activities from the very next day. Here at VPS Rockland Hospital, I do all ovarian cyst removals, fibroid removal, hysterectomies and even gynaecological Cancer Surgery via this technique. We also treat couples who are not able to conceive for these kinds of patients I do detail consultation and then try to find out the cause and then treat them accordingly. Here at this hospital, we are doing all procedures like oblation destruction, intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization too. But many of times we found there is no cause and actually it is your dietary pattern, your lifestyle changes and day to day stress in your life which is leading to all these problems.

So whenever you go for these treatments please work on these issues also along with heart treatment for any further queries or enquiries you can contact me on lybrate. Thank you.
