Here are 3 powerful ways to get rid of snoring.

1. Steam: Nasal congestion is one of the biggest reasons behind snoring. The best solution for reducing congestion is to inhale steam.
- Pour hot boiling water in a large bowl/ You can also use a steamer.
- Add three or four drops of eucalyptus essential oil or tea tree essential oil.
- Hold a towel over your head and inhale the steam deeply through your nose for 10 minutes.
- Follow this remedy daily before going to bed until your congestion clears.

2. Ghee: Ghee, also known as clarified butter, has certain medicinal properties that can help open up blocked nasal passages. This in turn will help you snore less and sleep better.
- Slightly warm a small amount of ghee.
- Use a dropper to put two or three drops of lukewarm ghee in each nostril.
- Do this daily before going to bed and again after waking up the next morning.

Does Your Wife Wake You Up at night With Her Snore?

Snoring can frustrate the people who share your home and it likely leaves you feeling tired in the morning.

Snoring is when you sleep, the muscles of your throat relax, your tongue falls backward, and your throat becomes narrow and "floppy." As you breathe, the walls of the throat begin to vibrate - generally when you breathe in, but also, to a lesser extent, when you breathe out. These vibrations lead to the characteristic sound of snoring.

Causes of snoring: age, being overweight or obese, drinking too much alcohol, blocked nasal passage, etc.

It’s not a condition to ignore. Reasons to take snoring seriously:

· Leads to poor night sleep.

· You may not realize how disruptive your snoring is, but it may have a serious impact on your spouse.

· Snoring can also cause you to have a dry mouth or sore or irritated throat when you wake up.

· Snoring leads to feeling of tiredness all the time, less focused, etc.

Tips you can follow which will help you to prevent it:

  • Change Your Sleep Position. Lying on your back at night causes your tongue and soft palate  to collapse back into your airways causing you to snore. Hence, try to sleep on your side rather than your back.
  • Go to bed at the same time every night and get plenty of sleep. Regular sleep patterns help you sleep better, and more restful sleep may reduce snoring.
  • Elevate your head with pillows to improve airflow through your nasal passages and to help you breathe easier.
  • Keep your nose clear, so that you breathe in through your nose rather than your mouth.
  • Sinus can be one of the causes for snoring so including Vitamin C in diet for immune system. E.g.papaya, bell peppers, broccoli, pineapple, etc.
  • If overweight or obese then reduce your weight.
  • Drink plenty of water. Stay well hydrated.
  • Eat healthy like complex carbs (whole grains, oats, etc), lean protein (lean chicken, fish, etc) and healthy fats like Omega-3 (fish, flax seeds, olive oil, etc).
  • Exercise daily. Yes it helps to reduce snoring.
  • Avoid eating heavy meals just before bedtime.
  • Avoid saturated fats in diet like red met, mayonnaise, etc.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol as they relax the muscles in the throat and interfere with breathing.
  • Quite smoking.
  • Talk to your doctor about your problem.

Snoring

Snoring is the production of upper airway noise via breathing during sleep.
• Snore- during sleep, the noise produced while breathing through the mouth.
• Snoring is a sound a person makes during sleep when his or her breathing is disrupted.
Aetiology /pathogenesis-
Snoring originates in the parts of the upper airway which have no rigid support to counteract compression from outside or collapse from inside. This narrowing leads to local acceleration and turbulence of the breathed air. This, in turn, causes vibration of the pharyngeal wall.
The structures concerned are-
• Soft palate
• Uvula
• Tonsils
• Base of the tongue
• Pharyngeal muscles and
• Pharyngeal mucosa.
Factors contributing to snoring-
The palate, tongue and pharyngeal muscles play a part in keeping the airway open during the inspiration. If, during the deep sleep phase, and especially during REM sleep, the muscle tone is insufficient, the tongue can fall backward due to gravity, and vibrate against the soft palate, uvula and pharynx. This occurs particularly in the supine position.
Anatomical abnormalities can limit the passage of air in the oropharynx and the hypopharynx. Such abnormalities include-
• Enlarged tonsils and adenoids
• Fatty tissue in the pharynx (due to obesity)
• A relatively large tongue (in the case of retrognathia, micrognathia and acromegaly).
• A narrow nasal passage causes an increase in negative pressure during inspiration, which increases the effect on the flaccid pharyngeal tissue. A particularly long palate and uvula also narrow the nasopharyngeal opening during inspiration. This explains why people who normally do not snore may do so when they have a cold or allergic rhinitis.
• Septal abnormalities, nasal polyps and tumours can also contribute to constriction.
• Hypothyroidism, neurological disorders, alcohol and hypnotics can intensify the overall effect.
Signs and symptoms-
• Unexplained tiredness or sleepiness during the day.
• Disrupted social activities and relationship problems (and even divorce). The snoring noise can sometimes be as loud as 50–70 db, which is similar to the noise of a low-flying jet plane.
• Sometimes, temporarily stopped-breathing (sleep apnoea), which can be very alarming.
Examination-
Very careful examination of the ear, nose and throat area, particularly the tonsils, palate, uvula and tongue is made. Nasal polyps, swollen turbinates, septal deviation, hyper reactive nasal mucosa, and abnormal anatomy of the lower jaw (relatively too small or recessed) is evaluated. Weighing the patient and blood pressure is next step. If hypothyroidism is suspected, the thyroid stimulating hormone level is checked.
Management-
The average snorer is a person more than 40 yrs old. While he inhales or exhales during sleep, the soft palate vibrates noisely. Snoring is usually caused by a condition which hinders breathing such as a cold, an allergy, a nasal polyp, tumor or deviated nasal septum. The cause must be removed to stop snoring. Snoring can also be diminished by reducing weight, stopping smoking and drinking alcohol in evening before sleeping.
Option 1-
If no abnormalities are found on the history or examination, no treatment is required.
Option 2-
If further investigations are found, general measures can be suggested. These include-
• Losing weight if necessary
• Avoiding lying on the back if the snoring is position-dependent and
• As appropriate, discouraging smoking, alcohol consumption and the use of hypnotics.
• Any underlying causes or contributory factors, such as hypothyroidism or allergies are treated.
• Mechanical devices placed in the nose and mouth only reduce snoring to a limited extent.
• If, in the case of habitual snoring, the patient temporarily stops breathing and/or the patient reports that he is sleepy and tired during the day, sleep apnoea syndrome must be considered.
• Snoring can also be cured about 80% by surgery. The operation is called uvulopalato-pharyngoplasty.
Prevention
Attention to weight, smoking, alcohol and hypnotics, and avoiding sleeping on the back are effective preventive measures. Reassurance is sometimes appropriate, particularly if there are groundless fears about sleep apnoea.

Home remedies

Anything that is easily available in or around your home, and has a medicinal use, may be used as a home remedy. Most ayurvedic home remedies are a blend of commonly used herbs and spices to cure common symptoms or prevent any ailment.

Substances such as clove, cinnamon, black pepper, cumin, fennel, rock salt, turmeric, coriander, ginger, honey, licorice, garlic, onion, basil and mint are generally regarded as effective home remedies. Ayurveda also prescribes some exercises, massaging techniques, aromas and cleansing therapies as natural home remedies.

Simple home remedies can be very effective in relieving symptoms, and preventing further development of a disorder. However, once a disease has fully manifested and reached the final stage of development, specific treatments are required. Home remedies may also support treatments prescribed by a physician. In some cases, even a proper diet can be a home remedy as it reduces the severity of symptoms experienced and avoids unintended aggravation of the condition.

Snoring Problem In Children - What Causes It?

Snoring Problem In Children - What Causes It?

When there are vibrations in the top airways of the respiratory system because of obstruction to the air movement during the time of sleep, it leads to the sound of snoring. When a child gently squeaks or snores at night, it could be a warning sign of an underlying sleep disorder.

Common Reasons for Snoring in Children

Infection in the Respiratory System- If the child suffers from a stuffy nose or from chronic allergies or cold then there is a chance that the snoring is brought on about by a blockage to the sinuses. The blockage to the nasal canal makes it difficult for the child to breathe normally and instead has to breathe through the mouth leading to the sound of snoring.

Inflamed Tonsils- Enlarged adenoids, as well as tonsils, are the primary reasons for snoring in children. It is also a strong indicator of sleep apnea. The inflamed glands block the airways and the child finds it difficult to breathe during the night.

Diverged Septum- When the airway of the nostrils is offset, it leads to the condition of a diverged or deviated septum. This again makes breathing through the nose quite a difficult job. This is because the passage is smaller as compared to others, lowering the quantity of airflow.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea- Obstructive sleep apnea is a severe condition where the airflow becomes obstructed completely via the respiratory system. This makes breathing difficult through the nose and can lead to other associated health issues.

Symptoms of Various Snoring Problems in Children

Each of the disorders stated above is characterized by a number of symptoms that lead to the problem of snoring in children. These may include-

• The child continues to snore almost regularly

• The breathing is brought to a halt by snorts, gasps or pauses that extend longer than ten seconds

• The child suffers from restless sleep or tends to sleep in awkward positions especially with the head tipped backwards. Remedies After observing your child’s symptoms there are a few remedies you can try on the recommendation of your paediatrician.

• Give the child some medications for allergy or congestion

• You can put your child’s head up with the help of a pillow.

This can clear up the blocked nasal passage and bring the child some relief. Aside from these, your paediatrician might feel that you take your child and go see either an ENT specialist or a sleep specialist to figure out if the child suffers from obstructive sleep apnea.
