Hormonal Imbalance In Men And Women!

Hormones are important messengers that play a pivotal role in the proper functioning of your body. Any imbalance in the hormonal level can throw life in jeopardy. Hormonal imbalance can affect a person physically, mentally as well as emotionally. In the present competitive world, with so much stress and anxiety, hormonal imbalance is on the rise. It can affect both men and women.

Factors responsible for hormonal imbalance in men and women

Many factors, either individually or collectively can affect and disrupt the hormonal balance in a person. The most common factors triggering a hormonal imbalance include

  1. Physical, mental and emotional stress.
  2. Menopause (in women) and Andropause (in men).
  3. Drugs and alcohol abuse.
  4. Unhealthy eating habits, leading to inflammation.
  5. Lack of any physical activity.
  6. Obesity, Type-2 Diabetes.
  7. The Endocrine gland does not function properly (due to an injury or an infection or old age). Hormonal imbalance may be age related. Certain chemicals (Diethylstilbestrol, DDT, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Dioxin) also have the potential to disrupt the Endocrine function.

Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance:
Some of the characteristic symptoms of hormonal imbalance include

  1. A sudden change in body weight (weight gain or weight loss).
  2. Anxiety, depression, and mood swings.
  3. Hair loss followed by thinning of hair.
  4. Irregular menses.
  5. Infertility.
  6. Erectile dysfunction.
  7. The appetite undergoes a change.
  8. A person may face digestive problems.
  9. Insomnia and extreme fatigue.
  10. Decreased libido.

Doctors may adopt any of the following treatments for hormonal imbalance

  1. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): This treatment helps women to deal with menopause better. During and after menopause, the levels of estrogen and progesterone, particularly, go for a toss. This therapy aims at maintaining the hormonal balance by replacing the hormones your body either fails to produce or synthesizes in very little quantity.
  2. Following a healthy lifestyle go a long way in improving the hormonal imbalance.
  3. Exercise regularly. Meditation, breathing exercise, cycling, morning and evening walks are great stress busters.
  4. Follow a healthy sleeping routine.
  5. Limit your alcohol and caffeine intake. Refrain from smoking.
  6. Avoid taking birth control pills.
  7. Maintain a healthy body weight.
  8. Include avocados, egg yolk, gelatin, carrots, coconut oil into your diet.
  9. People with hormonal imbalance can benefit from Omega-3 fatty. Walnuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, olive oil are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids.
  10. Ayurveda and herbal medicines have helped many people with hormonal imbalance.
  11. Some medications may help to improve hormonal imbalance (strictly on doctor recommendation).
  12. In extreme cases, surgery may be recommended.

Health risks associated with hormonal imbalance:
Hormonal imbalance can have adverse effect on the health resulting in

  1. PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome): PCOS is characterized by irregular menses, infertility, hirsutism, hair fall, acne and weight gain. Women of reproductive age are mainly affected by PCOS.
  2. Low libido, tiredness, weight gain, erectile dysfunction, mood swings, and irritability (due to low level of testosterone hormone)
  3. Thyroid problems (Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism and Grave's disease).
  4. Hormonal imbalance may also cause Diabetes and Adrenal failure.
  5. Irregular periods, mood swings, infertility, decreased sexual desire (low levels of estrogen hormone).

Hello, Irregular period is usually defined as any type of bleeding that's abnormal when compared to your last few menstrual cycles. It can include everything from a late period to early bleeding, and scant bleeding to extremely heaving bleeding. For many women, this can even mean an absent period (amenorrhea) or two periods in one month (metrorrhagia). It's actually a way of your body telling you something is not right and probably your hormones (especially estrogen and progesterone) are imbalanced. Although, in most cases, they are not dangerous, but it is important to figure out what is causing the irregularity (which may require a trip to the doctor). RESAONS/ CAUSES: Some common reasons for irregular periods: STRESS: Stress is the most common cause of irregular periods. Cortisol, the stress hormone, has a direct impact on how much estrogen and progesterone, two sex hormones, gets produced by the body. POOR DIET: Unhealthy eating and being overweight or underweight can cause irregular periods. In order for a woman to maintain a regular cycle, her body fat percentage needs to be at least 17-22 percent. EXCESSIVE EXERCISE: Excessive exercising (or even lack of it) and drastic weight changes can decrease the body fat, being underweight can offset your hormone levels, thus contributing to irregular periods. BIRTH CONTROL PILLS: When some women stop taking the pill, their periods may take one to three months to return to normal. And this can also reveal an underlying hormonal problem that was masked by taking the birth control pills. PCOS: Polycystic ovary syndrome causes cysts to form on the ovaries, interfering with regular ovulation. In fact, PCOS is far more complicated than a missed period. Talk to your doctor about this condition. THYROID: Thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, can cause widespread symptoms like changes in estrogen and cortisol hormones and missed periods. Some home remedies you can try to treat irregular period problem: REDUCE STRESS: Breathe away stress by doing yoga and breathing exercises and meditation in the morning. Also, do kapalbhati and anulom-vilom pranayama for 15 mins each. CHASTE BERRY: The best known hormone balancing herb for women, Chaste berry helps to regulate the female gynecological system. It works by normalizing the secretions of the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, and ovaries, which then appropriately signal to balance the endocrine system. Note – This herb is not recommended if you are taking any fertility drug. It should not be consumed during pregnancy. SHATAVARI: Shatavari is also known to restore the balance of hormones in women. Mix it with equal amount of Ashwagandha and take 1 teaspoon with warm milk at night daily. OTHER HERBS: Some other herbs you can try to regain healthy menstruation: Holy basil (Tulsi), Black cohosh, licorice (Mulethi) root, turmeric, and Evening primerose oil. (If you are on medications, always consult your doctor first). DIETARY CHANGES: Drink carrot juice, aloe vera juice, grape juice. Add ginger, cinnamon, pumpkin seeds, green (unripe) papaya, sesame seeds (with Jaggery), Apple Cider Vinegar and wheat grass to your diet. Also eat other seasonal fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Most women return to healthy menstruation cycle following these remedies. However, if you don’t benefit from the above, you should see your gynaecologist immediately. Hope this helps.

Hormonal Imbalance - How It Leads To Weight Gain?

Hormonal Imbalance - How It Leads To Weight Gain?

Being overweight sometimes has nothing to do with calories in your diet or exercise. For a number of us, mostly women of 35 and above the problem is due to out-of-whack hormones. It’s true that a few hormones in our body enable weight gain as they encourage the storage of fat, like insulin, the body’s sugar metabolizing hormone. There are also weight affecting hormone disorders like thyroid and insulin imbalances, both of which affect your shape, often drastically.

Here are a few other lesser known hormones that can play havoc with your physiology and weight:

  1. Leptin: Leptin is a hormone that signals fullness. It travels from your fat cells to your brain, telling it that you’re full. But this hormone starts swelling your appetite instead due to the consumption of a type of sugar called fructose, found in fruit and processed foods alike. Anything above eating five servings of fruit daily and your liver can’t handle all the excess fructose which is then converted into fats and released as triglycerides into your blood stream. This fat gets accumulated as belly fat mostly and it also increases levels of leptin, your body’s satiety hormone. This means you are unable to feel full and you keep eating and getting fat.
  2. Cortisol: This stress hormone makes you put on some extra pounds too. When its levels rise, blood sugar is converted into fats for long-term storage in your body. Stress triggers cortisol and so does coffee.
  3. Estrogen: Estrogen is a blessing and a bane for women. It makes women feminine and it also makes them fat. Normal estrogen levels actually maintain an ideal body weight as this hormone reduces the production of insulin, a fat storing hormone. Out-of-sync estrogen levels can cause exponential weight gain by directing a bulk of the glucose to be stored as fat, instead of sending it to the liver and muscles to be converted into energy. Your fat tissue can thus expand by as much as four times to accommodate this storage of glucose due to high estrogen levels.
  4. Testosterone: Toxins are entering your body even as you read this article from the air, the food you may be eating, your face cream, drugs, etc. These chemicals mimic natural hormones like estrogen. Higher levels of these ‘xeno’ estrogens can overwhelm the body’s testosterone causing an estrogen overload. Testosterone is an anabolic hormone, it contributes to muscle growth, which in turn supports metabolism, whereas estrogen overload increases insulin insensitivity. This imbalance, thus, adds on the pounds.

So, every time there is a drastic change in your frame size, understand that it could be a sign of an underlying hormonal imbalance, so do something to balance your hormones rather than change your diet once again to cut down even more calories. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Excess Facial Hair? You May Have A Hormone Imbalance!

Excess Facial Hair? You May Have A Hormone Imbalance!

Majority of women like to look into the mirror and find not an extra strand of hair on her face, be it the upper lip or near the ears. While it is not uncommon for women to have hair on these and other areas, most women resort to multiple ways to get rid of this. The pattern of this unnecessary hair growth is very similar to the pattern seen in males normally.

This condition of excessive hair growth is known as hirsutism and can be caused by multiple causes, as listed below.

  1. Genetic or racial: While the European women have a more clean face that is free of hair, the Mediterranean and Indian women are highly likely to have more facial hair growth. There is also a strong family history relation, and it is hereditary.
  2. Androgens (testosterone): This is a male hormone, essential for the development of male sexual characters. Though it is present in very minute amounts in all women, in some, there could be higher than these minimal levels, leading to minor masculine characters, facial hair being one of them.
  3. Hormonal imbalances: There are multiple hormonal issues which can manifest as increased facial hair growth. The two most common ones include polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and adrenal conditions including tumours, Cushing's syndrome, and hyperplasia. In all these cases, there is increased amount of androgens, leading to excessive facial hair.
  4. Medication side effect: Some medications like testosterone, cyclosporine, anabolic steroids, and Minoxidil also lead to increased amounts of facial hair in women. Some other medications used to treat migraines, seizures, schizophrenia, and hypertension can also cause hirsutism. This is indirectly due to increased levels of male hormones in the system, producing these effects.
  5. Birth control pills: These also affect the hormone levels and lead to increased facial hair.
  6. Obesity: Most women with facial hair are also on the heavier side, and most people have a reduction in hair once weight is managed.

Treatment: The underlying cause should be treated for controlling hair growth. If there is an inducing medication, an alternative should be looked at. While hormone levels can be altered, in most cases, not much can be done. These need to be dealt with using one of the following methods - depilatory creams, waxing, plucking, shaving, laser reduction, electrolysis, and weight loss.

When reading through the above, it is obvious that a lot of causes for hirsutism point towards hormones. This helps to identify hormonal disorders in their earlier stages, which are managed with lesser complications. The next time you feel there is more hair on your chin or cheeks, get your hormone levels checked.
