It is possible to test positive for hsv 1/2 without any symptoms. In the test, we check for the presence of immunoglobulins (immunity proteins) against hsv in the serum. It remains positive almost lifelong after an hsv exposure, even when there are no symptoms. But, in absence of active herpes lesions, it is rare to spread the infection; even though the test is positive.

The mode of transmission of herpes is by direct fluid tranfer by the blister of infected person to the non infected person. As your query suggest you had herpes 6 years ago. The chances of your partner get infected by your herpes infection is negligible.
