A herniated disc also known as a slip disc or prolapsed disc refers to the problem where one of the discs located in between the bones of the vertebrae(backbone) gets damaged and stacks itself upon the nerves. The symptoms caused due to herniated disc can be very severe and can also cause a bit of disability. The disc of the spine is like a cushion and separates the set of bones on the backside. The discs are shock absorbers of the spine and are mainly composed of 2 parts, a soft jelly centre called the nucleus and a tough outer covering called the annulus.

The spinal column supports the entire body. This is made of a number of individual bones stacked together with rubbery discs between them. These discs cushion the bones and act as shock absorbers. In some cases, the soft center of these discs can push through the exterior casing. This is known as a herniated disc. Not all herniated disc cases require treatment. However, in serious cases, treatment may include medications, surgery and physiotherapy. Surgery is usually the last resort for a hernia...more

Rubbery cushions (discs) between the bones (vertebrae) stack up to form the spine. When a nerve between the disc and vertebrae is pressed and inflamed, that condition is called herniated disc. The herniated disc is also referred to as the ruptured disc or the slipped disc. This is caused when the soft jelly is pushed out due to a tear in the exterior. Herniated discs can lead to an irritation of the nerves and result in tremendous pain. It may also cause the arms and legs to become numb and weak...more
