Currently there is no medical treatment for hernia. All you can do is to minimize precipitating factors such as chronic cough, bhp, constipation etc. When swelling becomes large and symptomatic then surgery is the only treatment.

If you have a hiatal hernia, your doctor may diagnose it with a barium x-ray or endoscopy. These tests both allow your doctor to see the internal location of your stomach.
Whether or not you need treatment depends on the size of your hernia and the severity of your symptoms.
Open surgery requires a longer recovery process. You may be unable to move around normally for up to six weeks. Laparoscopic surgery has a much shorter recovery time, but the risk of your hernia reoccurring is higher...more

Laparoscopy surgery is a very vital component of the hernia repair. Studies have shown that many patients have a better outcome when they opt for laparoscopic surgery. Candidates eligible for this mode of surgery include those with bilateral inguinal hernias, ventral hernias, and recurrent hernia. People associated with athletics and other outdoor sports prefer to go for a laparoscopic hernia surgery as it ensures a speedy recovery and minimal tissue invasion (due to small incisions).

This weakness or increase in pressure ...more
