Piles - Ayurvedic Ways To Avoid Surgery!

Piles are the tortuous veins which bulge out in the anal canal. There are so many factors responsible for this engorgement of the anal veins. The most common cause is chronic constipation. In such condition patients have to strain for defecation which puts pressure on the veins leading to congestion & engorgement.

When these veins get ruptured by passing hard stools or due to straining it initiates characteristic painless bleeding. Bleeding may be in the form of fresh blood drops or spurts of fresh blood. At this stage bleeding is the only symptom that patients complain of. This is known as 1st degree hemorrhoid. When these congested rectal veins increase in size, the pile mass may protrude out during defecation. After passing stool, the pile mass reduces by itself and sometimes patients have to reduce the pile mass manually. This stage is labeled as 2nd degree piles. When these pile masses further increase in size they may protrude out during walking or sitting etc this is known as third degree piles.

Types of piles-

Piles also known as hemorrhoids are dilated, engorged veins carrying blood in the anal canal. In simpler words, these are dilated blood veins that are located near the areas of anus. Piles are mainly of two types in nature namely

1. Internal hemorrhoids and

2. External hemorrhoids.

The internal ones are more common in occurrence in the human body than the external ones. Most often, these appear around two centimeters above the opening in the anal canal. As the name suggests, the external piles occurs on the outside area of anus. Whereas the internal piles are present inside the anal canal. Here are different stages of internal piles.

  1. In First stage patient complains of painless bleeding during defecation.
  2. In 2nd stage- There is painless bleeding along with mass protruding out per rectum during defecation which gets reduced by itself or manual reduction is necessary.
  3. In 3rd stage; pile mass could not be reduced back or if reduced by force; these come out even on coughing, walking or sitting.
  4. Some classify piles differently as when manual reduction is required; it is the 3rd stage while when pile mass is not reducible; it is the 4th stage of internal piles.

Symptoms of piles-

Following are the symptoms commonly seen in patients of Piles:.

  1. Blood drops with the passage of stool. Blood spurts may also be noticed while passing stools.
  2. Moreover, there are instances when there is unbearable itchiness around the anus specialty in ext. piles.
  3. A soft mass or lump may be noticed coming out through anus during passing stools which is reduced spontaneously & if it is large in size then it may be manually inserted back in the anus.
  4. Acute cases when the pile masses get infected or inflamed there may be symptoms of acute pain

Treatment of piles without surgery!!!

Yes; It is possible to treat piles without having to undergo the knife of doctor. Ayurveda is well known for treatment of piles without surgery.

A. In the first stage of piles, Kshar Karma therapy (application some kshar or medicine on the pile mass that cause shrinking of the mass) is performed which leads to arrest of the bleeding & regression of the pile mass. No surgery is required.

B. In the second & third stage of piles, the pile mass is ligated by the Ksharsutra as an opd procedure. After ligation pile mass shed off in some days. Usually hospitalization or bed rest is not required & patients can go home after the treatment. It is not advisable to ignore the problem as it will only aggravate with time. Earlier is always better to treat pile. Even at first stage; it is very important to see the doctor because the blood loss during passing stools may lead to anemia. .

Home remedies for Piles

1. Piles are the resultant of putting too much strain while defecation or sitting too long for defecation. So these should be avoided.

2. Avoid fast foods, spicy and too much oily foods.

3. Increase consumption of fibrous foods like green leafy vegetables, fruits and salads;

4. Increase intake of fluids and butter milk etc.

5. You should exercise regularly.

6. If the pile mass protrude out during defecation these should be reduced and it is better to keep them inside.

The most obvious symptoms of piles are bleeding and pain at the time of excretion or passing of the stool. For most of the patients with piles, sitting or standing becomes a tedious task.

Piles - How To Get Rid Of It?

Are you feeling an excruciating pain in the anal region? Is there a lump around the area that you can feel? Commonly called Piles, hemorrhoids, is a phenomenon where the blood vessels are inflamed or expanded in the anal canal. Veins in and around the anus and rectum are comparatively weak than the arteries which are quiet intense. This is because the walls of the veins are pretty thin and pain or discomfort arises when there is too much pressure on the walls. There are two kinds of Piles the internal piles and the external piles; the discomfort and severity depend on the kind of piles you are suffering from.

Causes behind it
The causes of hemorrhoids are not certain and anyone can get affected by the condition. It is more prevalent in elderly people and pregnant women. Sometimes, the condition is also hereditary, so if your parents or grandparents suffered from piles, there is a possibility that you may develop it too. When the veins in the anal region are subjected to pressure, the veins swell causing painful hemorrhoids.

The common symptoms associated with the condition are:
- Bleeding from the anus
- Painful lump or swell near the anus
- Anal itching
- Tenderness or pain during bowel movements
- Mucus Anal discharge

Treatment options for piles
In few cases, the Hemorrhoids can be treated with home remedies like a change in diet, warm sitz baths, and avoiding foods that may lead to constipation. For hemorrhoids of the first, second and third-degree, medications, home remedies and manual methods are preferred approaches. However, when the condition persists for an extended period with severe pain it is best to consider your physician.

The piles can be treated with:
- Injection or sclerotherapy: Treats internal hemorrhoids
- Banding: Treatment for prolapsed hemorrhoids
- Coagulation: Treatment using laser
- Surgery: Opted for in severe cases of hemorrhoids

Surgery is suggested when no other remedies for piles have responded. In the case of prolapsed hemorrhoids, or the fourth degree and higher degree, surgical methods need to be implemented. In common, surgery is deemed as the last option for piles treatment. Piles surgery is prescribed particularly by the surgeons in the situation where pain becomes unbearable.

The surgical treatments
Hemorrhoidectomy: This is the surgery done to remove piles. The physician performs a few minute cuts around the anus to remove them away. The area which is under operation is put under local or general anesthesia. Hemorrhoidectomy is often a procedure for the outpatient case, and you are typically discharged on the same day itself. The patient usually takes about two to three weeks, to recover fully but then it can even take as long as five to six weeks to get back to normal pain-free life again.
PPHAnother surgical method is PPH. It is also known as stapled hemorrhoidectomy. In this surgery, the physician uses a device which looks like a stapler to reposition the pile and struck off their supply of blood so that they eventually shrink and die out. This surgical procedure is less painful than traditional hemorrhoidectomy as it removes hemorrhoid to where there are fewer nerve endings, so it hurts less. There will be faster recovery, few or no complications, minor itching, and bleeding.

Piles - How Can Ayurveda Treat It?

Piles or haemorrhoids refer to a condition when the veins of the rectum or the anus get abnormally enlarged and causing significant bleeding and inflammation. Generally, there are two types of piles that are found in the human body. One is internal haemorrhoid which is generally painless and occurs in the inner layer of the anal region. The other is external haemorrhoid which occurs in the external layers of the rectum making it easily visible and extremely painful.

The causes of Haemorrhoids are obesity, a desk-bound lifestyle, untreated chronic gastric conditions like dysentery, diarrhoea, constipation, hereditary factors, pelvic tumours and significant increase in the weight of the uterus at the time of pregnancy.

The symptoms of piles include severe pain in the anal region followed by blood discharge with the faecal materials along with extreme irritability in the particular region and abnormal enlargement around the anal region.
In Ayurvedic treatments, piles are referred to as Arsha Shoola which means extreme painful conditions that resemble needle piercing. However, this intense sensation of pain can be eradicated by Ayurvedic treatments as it concentrates on the elimination of the symptoms.

Some essential Ayurvedic remedies for piles are as follows:

  1. Haemorrhoid is a medical condition that largely occurs due to a bad digestive system. A prescribed dosage of haritaki and jimikand might help in the overall improvement of your digestive system.
  2. According to the Ayurvedic scriptures, piles can be treated, if you can maintain a healthy dietary regime that should include amalaki, papaya and jamrul, but not excessive starch-containing foods like potato and pumpkin.
  3. A mixture containing radish and milk can be applied in the entrance of the anus twice a day to cure piles.
  4. A juicy extract of mint leaves and ginger along with a pinch of lemon juice and honey can be consumed twice a day to get rid of piles.
  5. If the bleeding is continuous a prescribed dosage of the herb nagakesara might provide adequate relief.

Piles - Know Surgical Ways Of Handling It!

For some people, lifestyle changes along with a healthy diet cannot do the needful when it comes to hemorrhoids, commonly referred to as piles. There are numerous options like the laser that can shrink the swelling and inflammation in non-invasive ways. But even though it takes lesser time and involves much lesser complications, surgical intervention can be the best way to achieve a long-term solution. It is particularly suitable for those who are suffering from intolerable pain and discomfort along with occasional bleeding.

What are the different surgical options for treating piles?
Surgery is the best way to treat piles in those who have failed to recover through other modes of treatment. In other words, you should consider getting piles surgery done in case you have hemorrhoids that cannot be treated through non-surgical means. There are numerous surgical options available for piles, and the primary types are mentioned below:

Hemorrhoidal artery ligation: This operation is used for reducing the flow of blood to the hemorrhoids. It is normally carried under general anesthesia while a tiny ultrasound probe is inserted into the anus. The probe then produces high-frequency sound waves which let the surgeon detect the vessels that are supplying blood to the affected area. Each of these vessels is stitched for blocking the supply of blood to the piles that eventually leads to shrinkage after a few days or a week. It is also suitable for treating hemorrhoids that prolapse and hang down from the anus.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the hemorrhoidal artery ligation is an effective procedure which can be used for treating piles. It causes lesser pain than other surgical options, and a higher level of satisfaction has been reported as well. The recovery time is also shorter in the case of hemorrhoidal artery ligation. There is minimal risk of bleeding and pain while passing stools and there is little chance of hemorrhoid prolapsing after this procedure. It can thus be concluded that this process is best suited for most people suffering from hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoidectomy: This is yet another way of treating hemorrhoids through surgical intervention. It is typically carried out under general anesthesia which indicates that you will be unconscious during the entire procedure and won’t feel any pain or discomfort. A conventional process of hemorrhoidectomy involves opening up of the anus to scrape out the hemorrhoids. It takes about a week or two to recover from the process, and you are likely to experience a significant amount of pain after the process. Even though you will be given painkillers, it is important to consult an expert if the pain continues for a long span of time.

Piles - How Can Homeopathy Handle It?

Piles or haemorrhoids cause severe bleeding (coupled with severe pain and blood in the stool) in the anal region because of sudden increased pressure in the concerned area due to an abnormal enlargement of the rectal veins.

The haemorrhoids, which grow on the outer part of the anus, are more painful as compared to the internal haemorrhoids (which are generally not visible on the outside and grow on the insides of the rectal area).

Primary Causes-

The major causes of haemorrhoids are hereditary factors, excessive alcohol consumption, weight gain, lack of regular physical exercise, undiagnosed and chronic gastric disorders such as dysentery, diarrhoea or constipation, tumour in the pelvic areas and a significant enlargement of the uterus during pregnancy.

Some of the most common homeopathic medicines for piles are-

Hemorrhoids - Know Forms Of Tackling Them!

Hemorrhoids can be very painful and are impossible to ignore. They can be defined as internal or external swollen veins. In some cases, making a few lifestyle changes such as eating fiber-rich foods and drinking plenty of water may be enough to relieve the problem. In other cases, surgery may be required. Surgery for hemorrhoids depends on the severity of the case. There are many different types of surgeries that may be performed.

Banding
Banding or rubber band ligation is a surgical process used to treat internal hemorrhoids. This involves placing a tight band around the hemorrhoid base to cut off its blood supply. This procedure does not involve the use of anesthesia.

Sclerotherapy
This is also used to treat internal hemorrhoids. It involves injecting a particular chemical into the hemorrhoid that makes the hemorrhoid shrink and keeps it from bleeding. This procedure does not involve the use of anesthesia.

Coagulation therapy
Coagulation therapy is also referred to as infrared photocoagulation. The procedure involves the use of infrared light and extreme heat and cold. The aim here is to help the hemorrhoid shrink and retract. It may be performed with an anoscopy. An anoscopy is a procedure that allows the doctor to look inside the rectum with the help of a scope. This procedure does not involve the use of anesthesia.

Hemorrhoidal artery ligation
Hemorrhoidal artery ligation (HAL) or transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD) is often used to remove hemorrhoids. It involves using an ultrasound to locate the swollen blood vessels and then closing these off. This procedure does not involve the use of anesthesia.

Hemorrhoidectomy
Large external hemorrhoids can be treated with a hemorrhoidectomy. Internal hemorrhoids that have prolapsed and are not responding to other forms of treatment can also be treated with this procedure. The procedure is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia or local anesthesia. The hemorrhoids are then cut off surgically. Hospitalization may be required for a few days after this procedure.

Hemorrhoidopexy
This procedure is also known as stapling and may be performed while the patient is under local or general anesthesia. It is typically used to treat prolapsed hemorrhoids. During the procedure, the doctor staples the prolapsed hemorrhoid to the walls of the rectum and cuts of the blood supply to the affected vein. By doing this, the tissue is allowed to shrink and be reabsorbed into the body. As compared to a hemorrhoidectomy, stapling is less painful and has a quicker recovery time.
