There is no exact answer to this question because menstrual flow and the number of pads you need depends on various factors and conditions. A rough estimate suggest that four to five pads a day can be used and it won't be considered abnormal, assuming that you are having a 7 hours of sleep at night.

For recovery from this condition and the medication that you have taken like certain non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, it may take about 4 to 6 weeks of time. If you are having surgical removal of the uterus to get rid of the problem of the heavy period, you will take around 6 weeks to recover.

The result totally depends upon the treatment that you opt for, like if you go for hysterectomy you will never even experience the menstrual cycle again and other treatments are temporary.

You should go to a hospital, when you are changing the sanitary pads more frequently than normal which means changing pads in less than 2 hours of time. Also if the size of your clot turns bigger when you are experiencing heavy periods, you must see a doctor immediately.
