Women's Facial Hair - How To Deal With It?

Women's Facial Hair - How To Deal With It?

Though most may not admit, all women have hair on their face and body. It is often masked by home remedies or clever make up tricks or frequent visits to the beauty salon. If you see a sudden spike in coarse or dark hair, especially on your face, it can be an embarrassing social condition.  Here are some insights into the condition and what you can do to get rid of it.

Blame it on your hormones:

In most cases, you can easily blame this condition on your hormones. Male hormones called androgens are responsible for the development of certain 'manly' features like deepening of voice or production of sperm. And the one hormone behind all this is called testosterone.

But women produce testosterone too- albeit in smaller quantities. If, for some reason, this hormone's level increases in women, it leads to increased sex drive, irregular menstrual cycle and yes, excessive facial and body hair.

One of the main causes of high levels of male sex hormones in premenopausal women is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a condition which causes cysts to grow around the edge of the ovaries (the organs which produce eggs and sex hormones).  PCOS also results in excessive hair growth, acne and weight gain.

Some women are stuck with this condition in the post menopause stage too, when the hormonal imbalance fails to rectify itself after menopause has passed.

Besides blaming it all on the hormones, here are some other causes you can explore:
a)        Being obese (weight gain is a side effect of PCOS too, so this is a slightly tricky one)
b)        Side effects from blood pressure medication
c)        Hereditary condition: Blame your genes
d)      Cushing's Syndrome or Acromegaly - rare hormonal disorders
e)        An Ovarian tumor

Treatment

Usually, cosmetic remedies are enough to get rid of unwanted or excess hair. So you may not have to go out of your way to handle this problem unless you have a special case. Most cases can be treated with

a)        Shaving: Not the most womanly thing to do, but it is quick and easy. Mind the stubble between the shaves
b)        Waxing: This is a pretty much standard procedure
c)        Bleaching: Can work for areas you don't want to shave
d)        Hair removal creams: Try and test out to see which one suits you
e)        Laser treatment: A powerful beam of single color light is used to destroy the hair from its root

If you are not sure what to do with an excessive facial hair problem, consult our experts today for a quick and easy remedy.

How PRP Therapy Can Help Manage Hair Fall?

PRP is a latest, state of the art technology that employs non-surgical methods to stimulate hair growth in case of hair loss.

Advancements in research have enabled scientists to make new inroads in the field of wound and tissue healing. The result of these researches is PRP, which is a natural way to rejuvenate your scalp, skin and stimulate your hair growth.

How does PRP Work?

The presence of mesenchymal stem cells and autologous blood products in human blood contain specific growth factors that assist in tissue regeneration and healing. PRP has been used to heal skin and wounds for over two decades now. Apart from this, it finds use in oral surgery, cosmetic surgery and neurosurgery as well. It is also the promising treatment to promote hair growth.

Benefits:

  • It is a progressive healing treatment that doesn't require surgery.
  • Simple, rapid and highly effective system.
  • Autologous (from patient's own blood).
  • The system is biocompatible and xeno-free, so there shouldn't be any safety concerns.
  • An increase in the concentration of platelets can be observed.
  • It helps in the elimination of undesired erythrocytes, which significantly decrease the fibroblast proliferation.
  • Contains growth factors that help in the stimulation of growth of the hair follicles.
  • Can be performed preoperatively, intraoperatively, or post operatively.

PRP Facial (Vampire Facial)
The vampire facial involves topical application of the PRP combined with aeration of the skin with Micro Needling. The platelet-derived growth factors stimulate a healing response that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while improving the skin’s tone and texture. PRP naturally improves all aspects of skin health:

  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improves skin’s texture and tone
  • Naturally increases collagen production
  • Pore refinement
  • Creates a natural glow
  • Reduces acne scars

PRP Hair Restoration
PRP Hair Restoration is a non-surgical solution for hair loss in both men and women. Platelet Rich Plasma contains growth factors that naturally stimulate the development of new hair follicles while improving the health of existing hair follicles.

What to expect:
First, a blood sample is obtained and processed to extract the Platelet Rich Plasma. A topical anesthetic is applied to numb the area being treated. The PRP is then administered with a fine needle in a series of injections on the scalp.

Mild swelling and redness can be expected 1-2 days following the treatment. It is recommended to avoid vigorous activity until the swelling has subsided. There is no other downtime following the procedure. New hair growth can be seen as early as 2 months, but is typically evident between 5-8 months and will continue to improve up to a year after treatment.

Who should Not Have PRP treatment?

Those with heavy drug and smoking issue should avoid PRP. Also, those who drink a lot of alcohol should avoid PRP. Those suffering from platelets related ailments, sepsis, chronic liver disease, thrombocytopenia, hyperfibrinogenemia, systemic disorders and cancer should also stay away from PRP.

Conclusion

At length, PRP is a boon for all those who aren't fans of surgery or the ones who prefer a more aggressive but non-surgical approach for treatment to their ailments. The results might vary from patient to patient, but it is certainly one of the most promising technologies to stimulate hair growth and rejuvenate your skin, and the results are quite convincing. So decide wisely!

6 Foods For Healthy Hair!

Everyone loves a thick luscious mane of hair, which is shown on television commercials. To be able to flick around shiny healthy locks, you may have tried the best shampoo brands, made frequent visits to the parlour and consulted the doctors several times. However, did you know that the best nutrition for your hair comes from the food you eat daily? Thinning hair, reduction in hairline, excessive hairfall resulting in an undesirable physical change, can be a major cause of frustration and low self esteem. Healthy and hygienic lifestyle, sufficient sleep, adequate water intake and exercises along with a balanced diet help to promote the growth of hair.

Important nutrients necessary to boost hair growth and volume:

  1. Most of the hair is made of protein and therefore it is of utmost importance to include proteins in the diet. Protein cells are building blocks for hair and strengthen your locks.
  2. Vitamin D leads to a healthy scalp and activates the growth of hair follicles.
  3. Biotin (Vitamin B7) leads to the synthesis of an important hormone known as Keratin which forms the fibrous part of hair.
  4. Inadequate Folic acid in the diet can cause a reduction in cell division and lead to premature greying of hair.
  5. Vitamin A and C help to keep the scalp free of dandruff. They lead to the production of sebum that nourishes the hair strands and prevents split ends. Split ends can lead to the breakage of hair, eventually turning your precious mane into a rough, dull and unmanageable one.
  6. Omega-3 fatty Acids improve blood circulation to the hair roots, promoting shine and health of hair.
  7. Iron and Zinc prevent breakage and damage of hair. They contribute to strengthening of hair roots.

Some of the best food items recommended for maintaining healthy hair:

  1. Carrots, Whole grains, Legumes and Lentils, leafy green vegetables, fruits: Carrots are rich sources of Vitamin A. Carrots have several advantageous effects on the human body, mostly showing remarkable improvement in eyesight and hair growth. Carrots can be eaten in a salad, boiled or lightly tossed in the pan in just a few drops of oil and beneficial spices for added flavour. Carrots can also be made into carrot juice and consumed on a regular basis. Vegetables, fruits and legumes are rich sources of iron, zinc; vitamins that are essential for hair maintenance.
  2. Lean Meat and Eggs: Eggs and lean meat are rich sources of protein. Egg whites do a commendable job when it comes to promoting hair growth. Egg yolk and the egg whites are known to remarkably condition the hair and benefit damaged hair when mixed with a natural hair pack before shampooing it off. Egg protein is beneficial, whether consumed or applied externally. It must be made a vital inclusion in your diet.
  3. Oatmeal: Known to have multiple benefits, it must make a way into your diet chart, if you are looking forward to healthy skin, hair and the perfect body weight. Oatmeal applied externally can condition and clean the hair, reducing itchiness of the scalp. Oatmeal consumed in breakfast daily can help to control hormonal imbalance that leads to excessive hair loss. It can also play an important role in controlling genetic alopecia.
  4. Walnuts and Almonds: The “W” of Walnut can also stand for Wonder nut. This nut contains all the necessary vitamins that activate the hair follicles and increase the volume of hair. It contains, iron, zinc, Vitamins B9, B6 and B1, healthy fats and adequate protein. Almonds are as beneficial as Walnuts, containing all the basic important nutrients needed for your hair. A handful of walnuts and almonds daily will zealously guard your hair for a long, long time.
  5. Green Tea and Dark Chocolates: Rich in anti-oxidants, green tea is beneficial both when consumed internally and applied externally. The hair can be washed with green tea to remove and prevent dandruff. Dark chocolates are also rich sources of anti-oxidants. Now that’s a delectable way towards healthy and happy hair.
  6. Fish: Salmon, Mackerel, Oysters are excellent sources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

Ingrown Hair - Everything Important About It!

Ingrown Hair - Everything Important About It!

Ingrown hair refers to a situation in which a part of the body hair which has been trimmed, shaved or tweezed grows back into the skin in a curled form. This sometimes causes painful and discomforting skin conditions such as swelling, bump formation and chronic pain in the area from where the hair was removed.

This condition is mostly common among people who have very tightly curled hair on their entire bodies. Among men the most affected areas are cheeks, chin and neck. Additionally, they can also appear in cases of men who regularly shave their head. In case of women, ingrown hair is common in areas like armpits, pubic region and legs.

The most common signs of this condition are:

  1. Small skin bumps (papules)
  2. Small, pus-filled, blister-like lesions (pustules)
  3. Hyperpigmentation (skin darkening)
  4. Long lasting and chronic pain
  5. Itching

Ingrown hair might also occur if you do the following activities:

  1. Pulling your skin while shaving your body hair can give rise to ingrown hair. This in turn allows the shaved hair particles to penetrate back into the skin without growing outwards.
  2. Tweezing of hair can also lead to the hair particles to grow inwards instead of growing outwards.

Some common complications associated with this condition are:

  1. Bacterial and fungal infections that usually happen from scratching of the affected area.
  2. Hyperpigmentation of the skin which involves an abrupt darkening of the skin areas.
  3. Permanent scarring of the tissue of the affecting skin.

Know More About Alopecia Areata!

Know More About Alopecia Areata!

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease (wherein the body’s immune system attacks its own healthy tissues rather than the malicious pathogens). There is no permanent solution for alopecia areata. However, there are some treatments available which would aid in preventing hair loss as well as stimulating growth of hair. The focus of therapies would be on strengthening the hair roots, scalp and fibre so that breakage is averted and your hair is restored to a healthy condition.

The therapies should incorporate:

  1. Deep cleansing
  2. Nourishment of hair shaft and scalp
  3. Smoothing benefits of keratin (a protein that forms the primary component of the hair) and anti-oxidants.
  4. Control of scalp ageing
  5. Improvement of blood circulation by stimulating hair roots
  6. Deeper hydration and thermal penetration to ensure root, scalp as well as hair shaft nourishment.

The therapies should aim to achieve the aforementioned objectives by utilizing phytonutrient extracts, nourishing oils, minerals, vitamins as well as plant peptides so that hair roots are energized, scalp is made healthy as well as hair fibres, are strengthened.

Strengthening of the roots of the hair is of primary importance to prevent alopecia areata as well as other hair fall conditions. The main techniques used to address this issue are:

  1. Therapy for Hair Roots: The most effective therapy is the one in which the dermatologist uses vitamins and plant extracts which are naturally injected into the roots of the hair through micro injections. This rejuvenates the hair follicles and prevents hair loss and thinning.
  2. Natural Hair Rejuvenation with PRP: This procedure focuses on utilising the blood plasma that is taken from your body. The blood plasma is platelet rich and is used to make the hair follicles healthier, thus ensuring healthy hair growth
  3. Hair Root Activation Laser Therapy and Low Level Laser Therapy: This treatment uses high-intensity light rays to increase blood flow and stimulate the cells in your scalp for better hair growth.
  4. Infusion of Hair with Nutrients: In this procedure, a cocktail of nutrients is prepared containing charged ions which penetrate deep inside your scalp and strengthen the cells and promote hair growth.

This condition, as mentioned above, is caused due to the immune system attacking the cells on your scalp. This condition occurs suddenly and causes balding patches but doesn’t usually lead to complete baldness or a permanent halt on hair growth. The volume of lost hair is different for different people.

Hair Loss - What Causes It And How Can It Be Managed?

Hair Loss - What Causes It And How Can It Be Managed?

Hair loss can affect just your scalp or your entire body. It can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or medications. Anyone — men, women and children — can experience hair loss.

Baldness typically refers to excessive hair loss from your scalp. Hereditary hair loss with age is the most common cause of baldness. Some people prefer to let their baldness run its course untreated and unhidden. Others may cover it up with hairstyles, makeup, hats or scarves. And still others choose one of the treatments available to prevent further hair loss and to restore growth.

Before pursuing any hair loss treatment, it is highly recommended to talk with your doctor about the cause of the hair loss and the best treatment options. Symptoms Hair loss can appear in many different ways, depending on what's causing it. It can come on suddenly or gradually and affect just your scalp or your whole body. Some types of hair loss are temporary, and others are permanent.

Signs and symptoms of hair loss may include:

  1. Gradual thinning on top of head.
  2. Circular or patchy bald spots.
  3. Sudden loosening of hair.
  4. Patches of scaling that spread over the scalp.

When to see a doctor

See your doctor if your child or you are distressed by hair loss and want to pursue treatment. Also, talk to your doctor if you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than usual hair loss when combing or washing your or your child's hair. Sudden hair loss can signal an underlying medical condition that requires treatment.

Causes

The exact cause of hair loss may not be fully understood, but it's usually related to one or more of the following factors:

  1. Family history (heredity)
  2. Hormonal changes
  3. Medical conditions
  4. Medications

Risk factors

A number of factors can increase your risk of hair loss, including:

  1. Family history
  2. Age
  3. Poor nutrition
  4. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and lupus
  5. Stress Treatments and drugs

Treatments for hair loss include medications, surgery, laser therapy, and wigs or hairpieces. Your doctor may suggest a combination of these approaches in order to get the best results.

Medication

If your hair loss is caused by an underlying disease, treatment for that disease will be necessary. This may include drugs to reduce inflammation and suppress your immune system, such as prednisone. If a certain medication is causing the hair loss, your doctor may advise you to stop using it for at least three months.

  1. Minoxidil (Rogaine): Minoxidil is an over-the-counter liquid or foam that you rub into your scalp twice a day to grow hair and to prevent further hair loss. It may be used by men and women.
  2. Finasteride (Propecia): This prescription drug is available only to men. It's taken daily in pill form. Many men taking finasteride experience a slowing of hair loss, and some may show some new hair growth. You need to keep taking it to retain benefits.
  3. Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy: This is one of the latest treatments for hair loss and is especially good for patients who do not wish to go for surgery. In this, a sample of your blood is withdrawn from which platelets are separated using a centrifuge. These are then injected directly into the scalp. Platelets contain growth factors which promote the growth of new hair and reduce hair loss. This procedure requires multiple sittings over a period of 5 to 6 months. It is an outpatient procedure with no down time. You can resume your daily activities almost immediately.

Surgery

In the most common type of permanent hair loss, only the top of the head is affected. Hair transplant or restoration surgery can make the most of the hair you have left. During this procedure, your surgeon removes tiny plugs of skin, each containing a few hairs, from the back or sides of your scalp. He or she then implants the plugs into the bald sections of your scalp. You may be asked to take a hair loss medication before and after surgery to improve results. Surgical procedures to treat baldness are expensive and can be painful.

Wigs and hairpieces

You may want to try a wig or a hairpiece as an alternative to medical treatment or if you don't respond to treatment. It can be used to cover either permanent or temporary hair loss. Quality, natural-looking wigs and hairpieces are available.

Prevention

  1. Eat a nutritionally balanced diet
  2. Avoid tight hairstyles, such as braids, buns or ponytails.
  3. Avoid compulsively twisting, rubbing or pulling your hair.
  4. Treat your hair gently when washing and brushing. A wide-toothed comb may help prevent pulling out hair.
  5. Avoid harsh treatments such as hot rollers, curling irons, hot oil treatments and permanents.

Platelet-Rich Plasma - How Can It Help In Hair Regrowth?

Hair Loss is a major concern for each and every individual, as it hampers one’s style and has a major impact on the self-confidence. Male-pattern hair loss has a combination of male hormones and genetics, while on the other hand, the cause behind hair loss in females is supposed to be autoimmune in nature.

Platelet-Rich Plasma is one of the many treatments for hair loss, which people can try out and get desired result. The plasma contains white blood cells and platelets, which are rich in growth factors. Let’s go deep into what exactly Platelet-Rich Plasma is and its role in hair growth.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP is a concentration of platelet-rich plasma protein, which gets derived from whole blood, with the aim to remove red blood cells. There is a fairly greater concentration of growth factors than whole blood and it is generally used to encourage a swift healing response to different specialities.

Using PRP is a great option for treating the problem of hair loss as it has numerous scientifically based articles showing:

  • Its effectiveness in increasing hair count
  • Thickness of the hair
  • Rapid increase in the growth phase of hair cycle

Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment Procedure

It involves a standard blood drawn from a patient’s arm. The tube containing the blood is put inside a machine, known as a centrifuge, which helps to spin the blood tube and get the red blood cells separated from the plasma. Then the plasma, which is rich in platelets, gets injected directly on to the scalp, right at the level of the hair follicles.

The process is carried out meticulously, which starts off with injections across the scalp that are injected approximately at every half inch over the area, having thin hair as a result of hair fall.

The whole process takes less than 30 minutes to get completed.

Results

Maintaining consistency is the key towards achieving the best results of this treatment. People need to undergo this treatment ideally once a month for three to four months in the initial phase and then gradually increase it to every six months thereafter. The extent of treatment depends upon how an individual patient responds and results it shows. If the treatment procedure is maintained on a regular basis, the desired results can be seen within the first two to three months.

Risk Factors

There is no risk involved in being part of this treatment. Most of the patients receive injections without getting the areas numbed, as there is minimum discomfort. In case, a patient comes across any sort of pain, cool air or ice packs can be used to minimize it.
