Premature Gray Hair - Know How Ayurveda Can Help!

Premature Gray Hair - Know How Ayurveda Can Help!

Are you looking for a natural and effective treatment for hair fall and premature graying of your hair? You should consider Ayurveda for dealing with these conditions without the fear of harmful side effects on your body. Hair fall refers to the condition in which excessive hair loss is experienced from your scalp. According to Ayurveda, these conditions are said to arise from ‘pitta dosha’ imbalances. The continuous disturbance of pitta can lead to hair loss and graying of hair. Consuming substances that enhance your pitta dosha results in premature gray hair. There are various Ayurvedic remedies for dealing with these conditions. The most important ones are as follows:

Panchakarma therapy

  • Panchakarma therapies such as Nasya, Virechana, and Shirodhara are effective for dealing with gray hair.
  • Virechana helps in balancing your vitiated pitta diosha.
  • Shirodhara using certain medicated oils also helps in reducing hair fall and hair graying.
  • You should use neem, shadbindu, and yashtimadhu oil for Nasya.
  • Regular hair massage using til oil that is made of amla and neem is essential for hair loss prevention.
  • You may apply ghee at the bottom of your feet with a bronze vessel before going to sleep. This is useful in converting your gray hair to black.

Diet

  • You have to avoid oily, spicy, and heavy food, along with coffee and tea.
  • Keep away from refined foods, junk food, carbonated drinks, alcohol.
  • Increase your intake of fresh fruits, vegetables.
  • You should prepare and drink a vegetable juice from lettuce, capsicum, alfalfa, and carrot.

Massage

  • Massaging your scalp is ideal for maintaining healthy hair, and preventing hair fall.
  • While massaging, the thumbs should be placed at the back of your ears, and the scalp should be rotated under your fingertips. Your scalp has to be moved along with your fingers.
  • After this, you should apply pressure against your scalp with your palms.
  • This is important for proper blood circulation, and the blood supply to your hair roots gets increased.

Yoga

  • It is considered that the nerve endings present under your fingernails are connected to the roots of your hair.
  • Rubbing your nails against each other helps in improving the blood circulation on your scalp.
  • The Prasanna mudra involves keeping hand near on your chest and rubbing your nails of eight fingers against one another for about 10 minutes. This should be undertaken regularly for 30 days. This helps in slowing down hair fall, reduces gray hair, and split ends.
  • You should consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for the proper diagnosis of your scalp condition before undertaking treatment measures on your own. A doctor will be able to recommend the best Ayurvedic remedies.

Why We Get Gray Hair?

Why We Get Gray Hair?

Researchers have gotten down to the root of the mystery of why our hair turns grey. The colour of a person's hair is determined by stem cells that make and store pigments in the skin. These pigments produce the hair colour of blondes, brunettes and redheads. As we age, these pigments start to die off. A distinguished look might not set in so soon if it wasn't for the cells that produce hair-colour didn't start to place them in the wrong location, rendering it useless, and thus resulting in premature greying.

Studies have also been conducted on mice whose hairs have turned grey. As a result, further research has been performed by inspecting human scalps for a possible cause of premature greying. Unfortunately, any discoveries won't lead to the reversal of greying in human hair. However, there is the possibility of gaining a better understanding of melanoma, a form of skin cancer, which kills approximately 8,000 people annually.

Though not directly related, melanoma and grey hair fall under the same category. Pigment cells or otherwise called melanocytes give the hair its youthful colour when they work properly. As they die off or develop in the wrong part of the hair follicle, grey hair inevitably develops. Furthermore, melanocytes can go entirely the other way by multiplying out of control to form tumours of malignant melanoma.

Things that everyone should know about why our hair turns grey:

  • The biggest culprit for getting grey hair is the normal ageing process. Like skin, as we age the texture of our hair changes too. Dermatologists have coined the phrase or rule that 50% of the people will have about 50% grey hair by the age of 50

  • A person's ethnicity can make a difference in whether or not they will get grey hair. Scientists have yet to figure out why ethnicity determines the order:
    1. Caucasians, with redheads earliest of all
    2. Asians
    3. African-American

  • Stress has an impact on our skin as well as hair issues. Think of those people who have had chemotherapy, lost all their hair and then grows back a different colour. Illness and stress play an important role in getting grey hair.

  • Just like everything else, our lifestyle can make a difference. Certain low vitamin levels can be attributed to the loss of hair pigment. Selecting foods high in certain vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants may help to protect cells against toxins, thus preventing cancer, heart disease, other ailments and yes even grey hair.

  • The myth that hair turns grey is only a myth. A single strand of hair grows for approximately 1 to 3 years at which time it is shed. When a new one grows, depending on your age will most likely be white. As hair regenerates it has to re-form pigment-forming cells and eventually they wear out.

The good news is that scientists are working hard on finding the cure and the prevention from grey hair.

Graying Hair - How To Subdue It?

Graying Hair - How To Subdue It?

Hair graying is an inevitable process that you cannot escape. It will strike you at some point in your lifetime. Graying hair was once believed to be a sign of aging process. But not anymore! In the last decade or two, there has been a U-turn in this trend. You will often come across young people, including teenagers, with gray hair. The pigment that mainly contributes to the natural hair color is Melanin. The absence of melanin is what triggers hair graying. Stress, certain medical conditions, genetics, and a host of other factors may interfere with the melanin production resulting in premature hair graying. As serious as the situation may sound, the following tips and remedies can go a long way to alleviate and slow down the premature graying of hair.

  1. Follow a healthy hair care routine: No matter how busy you are, you cannot afford to neglect your hair. The basic hair care routines can work wonders to arrest and slow down the premature hair graying. Indulge in a hot oil hair massage at least twice a week. Curry leaves not only promote hair growth but also prevent hair graying. You can boil few curry leaves in coconut oil and filter the mixture. Massage your hair and scalp with the healthy oil mixture (warm the mixture before use), keep it for 30-45 minutes and wash off with a mild shampoo.
  2. Delete stress from your life: Stress, anxiety and depression can trigger a hormonal imbalance. As a result, there may be a significant decrease in melanin production with premature hair graying being an obvious consequence. There can be only one solution to the problem- keep yourself stress-free. In addition to this, make sure that you complete your full quota of sleep (at least 6-8). Nothing works more like a sound sleep to beat the stress.
  3. A healthy diet: Ensure that your diet is nutritionally balanced and enriched. Green leafy vegetables, berries, walnuts, meat, mushrooms (Reishi), oysters, almonds, eggs, walnuts, salmon, tuna, dairy products (cheese, butter) can go a long way to slow down the premature graying.
  4. For chocolate lovers, there is a reason to celebrate. Research suggests chocolate (a rich source of zinc) can elevate the production of melanin, thereby preventing your hair to gray untimely.
  5. Smoking can spell doom for your hair and is best left untouched.
  6. Indian Gooseberry or Amla, a rich source of Vitamin C is excellent for your hair. You can have the amla raw, drink its juice. Further, you may also use Amla powder in hair packs to slow down the graying process.
  7. Some people also benefit from homeopathy and homeopathic medicines such as Acid Phos, Lycopodium Clavatum, Lycopodium, and Phosphoricum Acidum, to name a few.

Treating Premature Grey Hair!

Treating Premature Grey Hair!

Premature grey hair is often associated with excessive stress, bad diet, vitamin B deficiency and smoking. The fact is, however, that the number one cause for premature greying hair is genetics. The pigment that determines the color of our hair is produced by special cells at the root of our hair called melanocytes. It is the lifespan of melanocytes that determines the onset of the greying process. Once these cells die, the hair turns white.

There is no essential difference between a premature and a normal, age-related greying process. It is by virtue of nature that some people will experience their first grey hair in their teens and turn completely grey in their early thirties, while others will keep their original hair color for many decades. If more than 50% of a person's hair is white by the age of 40, it is considered premature.

There are some commercial products out there that claim to be able to rejuvenate the dead pigment-producing cells and reverse grey hair. Such claims, however, are mostly unsubstantiated. The sad truth is that at this point in time no remedy exists that can reverse the greying process. Most of the anti-grey hair products either use Fo-Ti, referring to the centuries-old legend of Mr He, who recovered his original hair colour, youthful appearance and vitality thanks to this traditional Chinese medicinal herb, also known as He Shou Wu or use vitamins B (mostly PABA and folic acid) as their main ingredients, since some forms of premature greying are said to be caused by vitamin B deficiency. However, such products are ineffective for the majority of grey hair sufferers.

Therefore, the only option for treating grey hair that seems to deliver guaranteed results is camouflage. Women use various types of permanent, semi-permanent and demi-permanent hair dyes but men usually prefer a subtle and less noticeable change in their hair color that does not cover all their grey hair. Such products are usually called progressive hair colorants. It is obvious that none of these products can make the dead cells produce pigmented hair and thus they must be used continuously to cover the grey of fresh hair. Although there are some natural hair dyes that claim to effectively cover your grey hair, the products that really work well all use certain chemicals. When deciding about hair dyes or progressive hair colorants, you should always consider the potential health risks, as most of them contain substances that can cause poisoning if used inappropriately or can lead to severe allergic reactions. You should always use a patch test before applying any such product and follow the application guidelines in order to minimize exposure to aggressive substances.

Old Age Problems - How Can Counselling Be Of Help?

Old Age Problems - How Can Counselling Be Of Help?

Old age is the most fathomed stage of any human’s lifecycle. By the time all the hair are greyish white, teeth are weak, and falling off; there is almost nothing left to fuel the sparks of desire to live. It is scientifically proven that during old age an average human faces the maximum amount of problems.

When an individual is all old and wise, they often become victims of various psychological conditions, which include depression, loneliness, and anxiety. All these terms are overlooked as they are old people waiting for the death, but what their children and younger ones, fail to realize is that all they need is a little bit of guidance and counseling to feel better and stay happy and content till their last breath.

Why is counseling required in old age?

  • To get rid of the depressive lows: When a person turns old, he/she is compelled to let go of numerous things that he/she never wanted to live without. Some of these include—they are forced to retire from their job, they are distanced from their family, and they become entirely obsolete with no purpose for continuing their lives. All these situations often make the elderly feel that there is nothing left for them anymore. It makes them feel sad and depressed and at the same time might make them lonely. They know that they are not physically fit for the job, but they still have a feeling of uselessness deep down in their heart.
  • To rev up social interaction: By going to a counselor, the old people can speak their hearts out, feel connected to someone, and can seek help for the things that no one could understand. Counselors can suggest them activities that include social interaction and more, that could use up their free time and keep them occupied. They can recommend small yet efficient and meaningful exercises, which include reading books or watching movies to keep their mind diverted and distracted. A counselor can do wonders and provide excellent facilities, as well.
  • To get help in case of traumas: Counseling is also essential in case of individuals who have suffered a significant trauma in their old age. This includes losing a family member in some accident or being entirely neglected by one's own family. Even in India, many families consider their parents and grandparents to be a burden and send them to old age homes without thinking how they would feel. In such cases, counseling becomes essential to ensure that our elders have a stable mind and are satisfied with the life they have led.

Counseling at old age is not a shameful thing or activity in vain. It is very much essential to ensure that our elders are confident and happy during their last stage of life.

Nasyam Treatment - How Can It Prevent Premature Of Greying Of Hair?

Nasyam Treatment - How Can It Prevent Premature Of Greying Of Hair?

Spotting the very first strand of grey hair in your 20s can be an intimidating sight. We usually expect our hair to turn grey by the time we are 30s or 40s, but having grey hair in your early age shows that you are a victim of premature greying. Although one or two strands of grey hair is not unusual, too much greying can cause you to panic.

Ayurveda and grey hair-
According to Ayurveda, any dosha imbalance in the body or disequilibrium in the mind-body constitution causes premature hair greying. Losing of hair is called khalitya and premature greying of hair is called palitya. They are pure paitik disorders or ones arising from our pitta dosha imbalances.

The pitta aggravation in the body is usually caused by-

  1. Oily and spicy food
  2. Acidity
  3. Overexposure and intolerance to heat
  4. Excess sweating

Nasyam or Nyasa is a Panchakarma treatment, an Ayurvedic variant of detoxification therapy, which applies herbal oils, juices and powders through the nostrils. Medicated oils/powders/ juices stimulate the important points of the brain to cure specific diseases. The nose is considered to be the gateway to the human brain, this procedure is used to cure several ailments related to the head. It effectively treats diseases related to migraines, sinuses, throat, nose, ear and all organs above the neck.

Nasyam treatment and greying of hair
Nasyam treatment can be categorised into five forms-

  1. Pradhamana Nasya
  2. Brumhana Nasya
  3. Shamana Nasya
  4. Navana Nasya
  5. Marshya Nasya

Navana is a part of nyasa treatment meant for shodhana or snehana. It is widely used to treat excess hair fall. Nasyam is a proven ayurvedic treatment meant to improve hair texture and strength.

Procedure

  1. Poorvakarma or pre purificatory measures: It Includes facial oil massaging or application of steam to the face, forehead, head, ears and neck. This helps to loosen and eliminate the Doshas.
  2. Pradhanakarma or main procedure of Nasya: This is the main step of Nasya and includes the application of luke warm medication through the nostrils, alternately, with the help of a dropper. The sole, shoulder, neck, ear and palm are gently massaged along with the administration of this drug.
  3. Paschatkarma or post therapeutic measures: The patients clean their mouth by gargling with lukewarm water and then medicated smoke is given to them to inhale.

How does the treatment work?
The oils used for Nasya therapy are shadbindu, neem, or yashtimadhu. The medicines applied through the nostrils pervade into the venous system (Blood circulation) and nervous system (Brain) present in and around the nostrils, which then relieves the blockage of the channels. This has a large impact on greying of hair and works to control it. It also makes the hair quality better.

Nasya treatment does not cause any serious side effect, although it is recommended only after heavy meals or Shirodhara. Hence, to control hair greying, the nasyam treatment has been a proven Ayurvedic treatment with effective and healthy results that is being availed by more and more people.

How To Prevent Premature Graying Of Hair?

Who would not like to have a mane of shiny, healthy and beautiful hair?

Premature Graying of hair is a common problem -

One of the biggest hair problems faced by people today all over the world is the problem of premature graying of hair. Even children as small as ten-year-olds are suffering from this problem.

Apart from the above-stated reasons of stress and pollution, there can be other various reasons for this problem as well; the other reasons being anemia, effects of drugs, hormonal imbalances, hypo or hyperthyroidism and malnutrition.

The hairs are colored by melanin which is injected into each hair follicle by the melanocytes cells located at the roots of each hair stands.

The above-mentioned reasons cause these melanocytes cells to stop injecting melanin, causing the hairs to turn grey or completely white.

Chemical hair colors would lead to hair loss

The most important step to preventing this from happening or from curing this problem is to first find out the reason behind the graying of your hair.

It would be much easier to find a solution once the reason is known. And for knowing the reason it would be best if you consult a specialist since a professional would know the best way to deal with this problem.

Coloring your hair with ammonia-based chemical hair colors would not only provide no solution at all but would actually aggravate the problem.

Hence instead of visiting a hair salon to cover the gray hairs, visit a specialist clinic to solve the problem permanently.

If there are no other ways than to color your hair, then make sure you opt for natural hair dyes like henna instead of the chemical dyes that contain harmful ammonia.

After all, it would not be practical to invite another hair problem like hair loss while trying to get rid of gray hairs.

3 Deadly Hair Care Sins To Avoid!

3 Deadly Hair Care Sins To Avoid!

Have you been wondering what is causing your tresses to weaken and break?

Just read the three deadly hair care sins given below to make sure you are not committing any of these guilty damaging habits against your hair:

  1. Letting your crowning glory soak up the damaging rays of the sun – it may be super fun to lounge at the beach but do you know that the UV rays of the sun are as much harm to your hair as it is for your skin? The harmful rays of the sun eat away the elasticity to weaken the cuticles of your hair. This leads to split ends, breakage, roughness and premature greying of hair. Unfortunately, hair does not have any sunscreen serums like skin. Hence the next time you go for soaking up the sun at the beach, make sure you cover your hair with a fedora hat or at least a scarf to keep your hair away from prolonged exposure to the harmful sun rays.
  2. Extreme Crash Dieting – While trying to get that desirable body like a supermodel, you are actually harming not only your health but your skin and hair as well. Extreme crash dieting might make you super thin but your body would have no other option than to channel all the food it gets to run all the vital functions. Since your hair is made of protein primarily, absence of that would weaken your hair roots leading to extensive hair fall. Hence even if you want to go into dieting, make sure you do so with the help of a good dietitian and include proteins as much as your hair needs to stay strong.
  3. Effects of Drugs – Before you pop that pill into your mouth without proper prescription stop and consider this; drugs not only affect your general health but also your skin and hair. Taking anti-anxiety drugs, anti-depressants, birth control pills and even simple painkillers frequently, that too without proper specialist supervision would ensure that you have almost no hair left on your head. Most drugs contain chemicals that would irrevocably harm the health of your hair leading to loss of hair.

Just steer clear of the above mentioned deadly sins and you would be closer to getting healthy hair, shiny hair and beautiful hair. Of course, you would also have to follow a good hair care regimen as well.
