A soothing cup of green tea can fix many of life’s problems. Green tea has acquired a high reputation for its powerful antioxidants. But that’s not its only key attribute. Green tea is also known to do wonders for the skin. The benefits can be savored by either sipping or using green tea topically on the skin.

If there is one skin issue that creates a state of panic in everyone's minds, it's acne. To understand how green tea works, it's important to know the causes of acne. One of the key reasons behind acne is overactive sebaceous glands that produce too much sebum.

Acne occurs when sebum binds with dead skin cells, creating the perfect environment for acne-causing bacteria to flourish and grow. This further leads to clogged pores and increased bacterial growth.

Green tea is rich in catechins, a plant-based compound that has anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties. Studies reveal that this substance can treat acne scars and spots effectively. Apart from anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, green tea is anti-androgenic in nature, which makes it a useful remedy for reducing sebum excretions in the skin.

Green Tea Benefits For Acne

Without any uncertainty, Green tea is one of the most loved ingredients in the world right now. It’s delightful, soothing, and an all-around health promoter! And now that its benefits are extended to beauty, green goodness can be used as an anti-acne remedy.

Green tea offers a wide range of skincare benefits, including the treatment of acne. Drinking green tea or applying it on the skin helps in decreasing inflammation & sebum production. Having said that, the green brew is excellent in managing acne for the following reasons:

  • Green tea is packed with catechins, a substance that has antimicrobial activity and destroys the bacteria-causing acne.
  • It has anti-inflammatory characteristics and decreases the redness & inflammation that often occur with acne.
  • When consumed, Green tea detoxifies and cleanses the body from within and helps against hormonal acne.
  • Green tea is rich in friendly antioxidants that fight against free radicals, thereby keeping your skin healthy.
  • These powerful antioxidants also help heal acne scars and unclog large pores.

How To Use Green Tea For Acne?

Brew a concentrated cup of green tea and mix it with apple cider vinegar in the ratio of 3:1. Dab the mixture on the acne scars by using a cotton swab and let it dry. Wash your face after some time and follow the step with the application of a good moisturizer. Store the mixture in a refrigerator for further use.

  1. Honey and Green Tea

Antibacterial honey, when combined with anti-inflammatory green tea, is a perfect mask to decrease acne spots and scars. This also keep your face moisturized and helps in unclogging skin pores.

All you have to do is put the green tea bag in hot water for about 3 minutes. Remove the tea bag, let it cool and then cut it to take out the leaves. Mix these leaves with a tablespoon of honey and apply the mixture on your face for about 20 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water and pat dry your face. Repeat the procedure for about 3-4 times a week to see some noticeable change in the skin.

  2. Apple Cider Vinegar and Green Tea

Apple cider vinegar acts as an astringent and helps maintain the pH level of skin. It cleanses the skin and at the same time, green tea destroys the acne-causing bacteria. The combination of these two natural ingredients makes an effective remedy for managing acne spots.

  3. Tea Tree Oil and Green Tea

Tea tree oil is known for its strong antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. These, when combined with the anti-inflammatory action of green tea, ensures out-and-out cleansing of the skin. This face pack removes excess sebum (oil) and inhibits the clogging of pores.

Brew some green tea and put a few drops of tea tree oil after it is cooled down. The mixture works as a natural toner and you can apply it all over your face using a spray bottle or cotton swab. You can follow the step with the application of a good moisturizer. Store the mixture in a refrigerator for further use.

  4. Aloe Vera and Green Tea

Aloe vera mixed with Green Tea not only treats acne but also soothes the skin, diminishes redness and decreases inflammation. The mixture efficiently removes dead skin cells, excess oil & other impurities from the skin pores and makes them less prone to infection.

Prepare a strong extract of green tea and allow the solution to cool down. Add aloe vera gel to it to get a toner-like consistency. Use a cotton swab or spray bottle to apply the fluid on your face. Store the mixture in a refrigerator for further use.

  5. Lemon and Green Tea

Lemon is a natural skin cleanser for getting flawless skin. Lemon juice is useful in reducing dark spots, acne scars and skin discoloration. Green tea has potent antioxidant that nourishes skin and fights against infections. When coupled, these ingredients work best to remove acne spots & scars and lighten overall skin.

Take some strongly brewed green tea and add about half a teaspoon of lemon juice. You can also add some sugar granules in the mixture to prepare a thick paste. Apply this mixture on your face for about 10 minutes and wash it off with water. Apply a good moisturizer thereafter and repeat this procedure 4-5 times a week.

Green tea is extremely effective and targets the root cause of acne by cleansing the skin pores and reducing excessive oil secretion. It also aids in reducing redness & inflammation, leaving behind soft, glowing & healthy skin. However, apart from applying green tea topically, consuming green tea regularly is also vital to cleanse your skin from within and keeping acne at bay.
