First of all, there is nothing like central diabetes mellitus.
Sometimes, excess gh or acth release from pituitary from the tumor may cause hyperglycemia called as secondary diabetes.
Low secretion of adh may cause excessive urination known as diabetes insipidus lead to excessive thirst. But sugar remains normal in the blood. So please be more specific about his illness and give a proper history of what hormones he is taking regularly.

Dear lybrate-user,
as you mentioned that your mother is over 70. I would advise you not to have cashews or any dry fruits for that matter. All dry fruits and nuts contain phytic acid which is anti nutrients and causes tooth decay.
My advice would be to consume bael fruit (without fiber) as it is excellent for blood sugar management as well as digestion. Also you can try black grapes as they are full of polyphenols and provide nature sugar.
