Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a form of digestive disorder, which affects the lower oesophageal sphincters or the muscle ring present between the stomach and the food pipe. GERD incorporates the return of the contents of the stomach back to the oesophagus or food pipe. The functioning of the lower oesophageal sphincter is disrupted.

Causes:  Hiatal hernia is a common cause of GERD. An unhealthy lifestyle and diet may also lead to GERD. Intake of an excess amount of chocolates, fried food, coffee or alcohol triggers the chance of a reflux. GERD also occurs in obese people and pregnant women.

Symptoms: Heartburn, also known as acid indigestion, is the primary symptom of GERD. The affected person may feel a burning chest pain which starts from behind the breastbone and reaches up to the throat. The feeling can be defined as food coming back to the throat with a bitter, acidic taste. The burning sensation may last as long as two hours.

Other symptoms include:

  1. Excess saliva secretion
  2. Chronic conditions of sore throat
  3. Laryngitis
  4. Gum inflammation
  5. Tooth cavities
  6. Unpleasant breath

In order to diagnose GERD, several tests may be conducted . They are:

  1. An X-Ray of the upper part of the digestive system.
  2. Endoscopy to examine the inner part of the oesophagus.
  3. Ambulatory acid test for monitoring the amount of acid within the oesophagus.
  4. An oesophageal impedance test to measure substance movement inside the oesophagus.

Treatment

  1. A person must make several changes to his daily lifestyle and diet plan for treatment of GERD.
  2. Food and beverages like chocolates, fatty food, coffee, alcohol and peppermint should be avoided in order to reduce the weakening of the lower oesophageal sphincter. Several food items irritate the damaged oesophageal lining and should also be avoided. They include citrus fruits, tomato and pepper.
  3. Smoking cigarettes results in weakening of the lower oesophageal sphincter and should be stopped to reduce GERD.
  4. One should elevate the head of the bed on which he or she sleeps on blocks measuring 6 inches. This reduces the heartburn as gravity minimizes stomach reflux to return to the oesophagus.
  5. Over the counter medicines can be used to cure GERD. Antacids are a good example and neutralize the acid in the oesophagus and stomach, reducing heartburn. Combining antacids with foaming agents is also effective. A foam barrier is formed over the stomach, preventing the occurrence of acid reflux.
  6. Medicines for reducing acid in the stomach are prescribed in cases of chronic GERD, which include H2 blockers by the likes of cimetidine, famotidine or nizatidine.

Acid Reflux or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is caused when the valve between the esophagus and stomach becomes weak. Normally, this valve opens to allow food in and then it shuts tightly. With GERD, the valve stays open, allowing stomach acids to flow back up into the esophagus, causing heartburn and many other symptoms. It leads to a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates (backs up or refluxes) into the esophagus. If you have heartburn that occurs more than twice a week and/or does not get better with over-the-counter antacids, you may have GERD.
Causes

Consumption of pitta (fire) aggravating foods and foods of incompatible nature (virudh aahar) vitiates all the doshas, predominantly pitta dosha. Vitiated doshas produce heating toxins that are expelled upwards into the food pipe causing heartburn. Increased intake of tea or coffee, or oily, spicy, or fried foods aggravates pitta and leads to acidity. An aggressive nature and hyperactivity are also causal factors. Pitta is aggravated by late night work schedules, irregular eating patterns, and/or drinking alcoholic and carbonated beverages. Increased intake of painkillers and antibiotics also cause acidity and heartburn.

According to Ayurveda, Acid Reflux is a result of aggravation of pitta Dosha. Pitta is an Ayurvedic humor that symbolizes heat or fire. It is hot, sharp, intense, acidic and pungent in nature and is located in the stomach. Aggravated pitta leads to increase of acidic content in stomach fluids. Actually, the reflux of the stomach's liquid contents into the esophagus occurs in most normal individuals. In such patients, refluxed liquid contains acid more often due to aggravated pitta, which leads to acid reflux.
Diet & Lifestyle Advice

Avoid tea, coffee, and carbonated or alcoholic beverages.

Avoid processed and fermented foods.

Mix together equal parts of powdered fennel, licorice root, basil leaves, and coriander seeds. Have ½ teaspoon of this mixture with ½ teaspoon of powdered rock candy (mishri) 15 minutes before lunch and dinner.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD refers to a particular type of digestive disease, and mainly affects the LES or lower esophageal sphincter, which is a muscle ring between the stomach and the esophagus resulting in the symptoms such as burning sensation in the chest or difficulty in swallowing.

Treatment options

  3. Stretta: This surgical procedure is performed as an outpatient option using an endoscope. As a result, the scar tissues formed, block the nerves that are responsible for acid reflux.
  4. Bard EndoCinch System: This surgical procedure also uses an endoscope to create stitches to make pleats in the lower esophageal sphincter, which strengthens the LES. However, this surgical treatment option is not as common as other GERD treating procedures.
  5. Linx Surgery: In Linx surgery, a special device called Linx, a ring containing microbeads of magnetic titanium, is wrapped around the sphincter to make it strong. As the beads are magnetized, they help in keeping the opening between the esophagus and stomach closed, while letting the food pass normally.

Recovery
As long as the surgical option is laparoscopy, they are the least time-consuming as well as less painful with lesser downtime, but may not be ideal for everyone. When it comes to traditional surgical treatment options like fundoplication, it takes around minimum six weeks to resume the daily activities.
