Most likely your edema and ascites are due to protein deficiency, so unless protein is replenished, you may continue to have issues. Speak to your doctor about oral protein supplements, to see if that is a feasible option for you. You may also consult with a palliative care institution, which may help you get the injections or supplements for free or at subsidized rates. Also, you can get in touch with distributors directly who can get you heavy discounts on the products.

It will be better if you avoid completely. But even if you loose your discipline you should eat a very minimal amount, that too once or twice a month.
For strength you can do some physical exercise and eat nutrient rich foods like chicken and eggs or paneer, tofu etc if you are veg. You should also take few pieces of dry fruits daily for energy.

No details of actual complaints during Gastroenteritis and medications. About 4 weeks have passed now. You should have been fully recovered and leading normal life as before. Iron is supposed to cause Indigestion. Common precautions like simple home made food avoiding outside, spicy and fried items with care of personal hygiene is all that is necessary. Your treating doctor would be in a better position to clear all your doubts.
