Most of the time, gas is no more than a minor annoyance. However, gas occasionally produces intense pain that makes the entire abdomen feel full and tender. This pain can radiate to the back, causing back pain and bloating. Minor gastrointestinal problems, such as stomach viruses, may also cause intense gas pain.

Even if you had light dinner at night, the gas build-up for the entire day makes you feel flatulent at night. The healthy gut bacteria takes approximately six hours to digest the food completely. So you may even feel fluffy because of what you have eaten in the last six hours, including your lunch.

Flatulence also happens when people swallow excess air. This can occur when someone chews gum, eats quickly, or drinks carbonated drinks. Watery flatulence is when a fart feels wet because mucus or some watery stool passes out alongside gas.
