Mediterranean Diet!

Consuming a mediterranean diet - rich in fruits and fish - while decreasing the intake of soft drinks may help prevent the risk of developing colorectal cancer by nearly 86 per cent, suggests a new study. Colorectal cancer develops from intestinal polyps and has been linked to a low-fibre diet heavy on red meat, alcohol and high-calorie foods.

" We found that each one of these three choices was associated with a little more than 30 per cent reduced odds of a person having an advanced, pre-cancerous colorectal lesion, compared to people who did not eat any of the mediterranean diet components" said naomi fliss isakov from tel-aviv medical centre, in israel.

" Among people who made all three healthy choices the benefit was compounded to almost 86 per cent reduced odds" isakov added.

For the study, presented at the esmo 19th world congress on gastrointestinal cancer, the team included 808 people who were undergoing screening or diagnostic colonoscopies who were between 40 and 70 years old and had adhered to a mediterranean diet.

  • A balanced diet can help cut down sugar cravings.
  • A typical mediterranean diet was defined as consumption levels above the group median for fruits, vegetables and legumes, nuts and seeds, whole grains, fish and poultry and a high ratio of monounsaturated to saturated fatty acids, as well as consumption below the median of red meat, alcohol, and soft drinks.
  • Consumption of even two to three components of the diet, compared to none, was associated with half the odds of advanced polyps, the study showed.

On top of these benefits to both your erectile and cardiac strength, a mediterranean diet has also passed the most rigorous of all tests:â mortality studies. The results of these studies have shown that the mediterranean diet improves overall mortality, which means that it is good for both your heart and multiple cancers, etc.

Different types of fever and thier diagnosis

Different types of fever and thier diagnosis

The nature of the type of the fever and the duration should be considered as there are many types which could help narrow down the differential diagnosis you are considering.

Continuous fever: Where the temperature remains above normal throughout a 24-hour period and does not fluctuate more than 1 degree Celsius in 24 hours. This type of fever occurs in lobar pneumonia, typhoid, urinary tract infection, infective endocarditis, brucellosis, and typhus.

Remittent fever: The temperature remains above normal throughout the day and fluctuates more than 2 degree Celsius in 24 hours. This type is seen in patients with typhoid fever and infective endocarditis.

Pel-Ebstein fever: There is a regular alternation of recurrent bouts of fever and febrile periods. The temperature may take 3 days to rise, remain high for 3 days and then remits over 3 days. The patient could then be apyrexial for 9 days.

Intermittent fever: In a 24 hour period the temperature is only present for some hours of the day and the rest of the time is normal. The spike can occur same time each day, every other day or every few days but is normally in a repetitive pattern. Examples of some diseases which have an intermittent fever are malaria, pyemia, and septicemia.

Septic fever: A very high temperature which doesn't improve with antipyretics can indicate a septic fever and the patient should be seen quickly and reviewed to prevent any further deterioration in their state of health.

Cyclical recurrent fevers or periodic fevers: These are recurrences of fever which last from a few days to a few weeks and are separated by symptom-free intervals. This pattern of fever can be caused by recurrent infection, malignancy or non-infectious inflammatory diseases. Attacks of fever which follow the same course normally have a non-infectious cause like Still's disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease and Bechet's syndrome. A family history of periodic fever could indicate Familial Mediterranean Fever or Hyper-IgD syndrome.

Fever - What Does It Indicate?

Fever is a common medical sign that is generated by the body to a varied level of infection and other conditions. It results from the elevated temperature of the body due to the body’s thermostat getting reset to a higher than normal temperature. It is a defence mechanism of the body to fight against external microbes. It is not a disease but a symptom of a disease that the body is fighting against.

Temperature variation of fever:
There is no absolute value of body temperature which is defined as fever. However, the below-mentioned temperatures are generally accepted as a condition of fever:

  1. Rectal temperature of more than 38 degrees centigrade
  2. Oral temperature of more than 37.8 degrees centigrade
  3. Armpit temperature of more than 37.2-degree centigrade
  4. Ear temperature of more than 38-degree centigrade
  5. Forehead temperature of more than 38-degree centigrade

Different types of fever:

  1. Continuous fever: This is a condition where the body temperature is above normal for more than 24 hours and temperature fluctuation is not more than 1-degree centigrade. Continuous fever is observed in diseases such as typhoid, typhus, infective endocarditis and pneumonia.
  2. Remittent fever: Remittent fever refers to a condition where the body temperature constantly remains more than normal for 24 hours. The temperature fluctuation is not more than 2-degree centigrade. This kind of fever is observed in diseases such as infective endocarditis and typhoid.
  3. Intermittent fever: This is a condition where the body temperature rises for few hours in a day and comes down to normal for the rest of the day. The spike in temperature has a repetitive pattern and is visible in diseases such as malaria, septicemia, and pyemia.
  4. Septic fever: This is a condition which is characterised by an extremely high fever that refuses to come down to normal and has hardly any fluctuation. This condition should be immediately addressed by a doctor to ensure further deteriorating of the physical health of a patient.
  5. Pel-Ebstein fever: This condition is characterised by recurrent bouts of body temperature. It might take up to 3 days for the temperature to rise, it maintains the temperature for the next 3 days and gradually comes down over the next 3 days. The total cycle continues for 9 days.
  6. Periodic fevers: This is the kind of fever which can last up to few days to few weeks followed by a symptom-free period of a fixed interval. This fever has a particular pattern and is mostly witnessed in patients suffering from diseases such as stills disease, Crohn's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Certain other conditions such as hyper-IgD syndrome and Mediterranean Fever can also result in this condition. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a General Physician.

Using Basal Body Temperature Method For Natural Family Planning!

Dr. Meenu Bansal 91% (10 ratings)
Gynaecologist, Ahmedabad
Using Basal Body Temperature Method For Natural Family Planning!

Family planning is an important aspect of modern healthcare and public policy systems. The basal body temperature method is a type of awareness-based procedure that promotes natural family planning. The basal body temperature is the temperature of the body when the person is at complete rest. Ovulation tends to cause a slight rise in the basal body temperature. Most women are in their most fertile state during two to three days before the increase in body temperature. Therefore, tracking the basal body temperature every day enables women to predict the probable date of ovulation. This, in turn, can help women determine the time spans when they are most likely to conceive.

Importance of basal body temperature
When women wish to get pregnant, the basal body temperature can be used to determine the best days to perform sexual intercourse. On the other hand, women that want to avoid pregnancy can use this technique to help prevent unprotected intercourse. This method alone does not provide adequate warning time to prevent pregnancy efficiently; it should be used in combination with other fertility awareness methods when women want to avoid pregnancy.

Tracking the basal body temperature for contraception or fertility reasons is not just economical but the method offers no side effects. Some women choose this method because it conforms to their religious beliefs.
This method can also be used to detect pregnancy. Immediately after ovulation, a rise in the basal body temperature (lasting for more than 18 days) can signal the onset of pregnancy.

Are there any risks?
We must mention that using the basal body temperature method does not have to carry any risks or complications. However, the method does not offer any protection from sexually transmitted diseases and other infections. Women that are not ready to conceive should avoid sexual intercourse altogether. Else, they may use the barrier method of contraception during the fertile days in each month.
It is crucial to bear in mind that the basal body temperature can be affected by various factors. These include physical and psychological stress, fever, illness, interruption in sleep cycles, the consumption of alcohol, gynecological disorders, taking certain medicines.

Preparing for basal body temperature method
Women who are interested in using this method can track basal body temperature without any special preparations. Healthcare professionals recommend the use of a digital thermometer. Alternatively, women can use a thermometer mainly devised to measure basal body temperature. Also, women must ensure that they allow themselves regular hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. This schedule will enable them to gain accurate readings of body temperature. Also, they must consult with a gynecologist if they have recently given birth or have stopped taking hormonal contraceptives, are breastfeeding, or about to approach menopause. These actions and processes can help women to control their reproductive health. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Symptoms And Prevention of Dengue Fever

MD - General Medicine
General Physician, Mahabubnagar
Symptoms And Prevention of Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is a painful infection transmitted by the bite of one of the 4 closely related viruses that are carried by a type of mosquitoes known as Aedes mosquitoes. The infection is not directly from one person to another.

Symptoms: After the mosquito bite, symptoms set in about 4 to 6 days and can last up to 10 days (as noted below). Most are general symptoms which can be seen with any viral infection and therefore most dengue cases can go undetected.

  1. Sudden high temperature
  2. Pain behind the eyes
  3. Severe headache
  4. Swollen lymph nodes
  5. Severe bone and muscle pains (this can lead to suspicion of dengue)
  6. Fatigue
  7. Nausea and vomiting
  8. Skin rash that appears 3 to 5 days after the onset of fever
  9. There could be in some cases gum bleeding, easy bruising, or nose bleeding

The dengue triad of symptoms is fever, headache and the skin rash. This could lead to suspicion and blood tests that can lead to diagnosis.

The acute phase lasts for about 2 weeks in most cases and there is no antibiotic (it is a viral infection) cure for it. The treatment is therefore symptomatic, aimed at reducing fever and pains.

If left untreated, especially in children, a severe case called as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) can occur, which affects children under 10 years of age and can cause failure of the circulatory system. This can also occur when a person is developing dengue for the second time. This is a serious form and can even lead to death; therefore the symptoms should be taken seriously and attended to immediately.

Diagnosis: Confirmation of dengue is through a blood test, where the virus is tested for.

Treatment: Being a viral infection, antibiotics are not effective against dengue. Pain killers with acetaminophen are preferred. Aspirin is avoided, as it can worsen bleeding. Complete bed rest, hydration and good nutrition are essential parts of the treatment. Being under medical supervision also helps watch out for complications. There is a vaccine under development that could become available in the next couple of years.

  1. Always use mosquito repellents, even indoors
  2. While being outdoors, use clothes that cover the arms and legs fully
  3. Use a mosquito net if your area is highly infested with mosquitoes
  4. Ensure the windows and doors are closed during the evening
  5. If you are suspicious of having dengue, reach out to the doctor
  6. Reduce chances for mosquitoes breeding by keeping the house clean
  7. If there are family members with dengue, protect yourself and them from mosquitoes

Preventing dengue is the best way to manage it; however, if once infected, the person develops immunity to it. Reduced immunity can put the person at risk of developing the condition again. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a general physician.

How To Cure HAY FEVER With Homeopathy?

How To Cure HAY FEVER With Homeopathy?

Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis is an allergic response to airborne substances such as pollen, dust mite or other allergens from plants or fungi. The symptoms of hay fever include sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, itchy throat, sinus pressures and congestion. Unlike its name, hay fever does not cause any fever.

The allergy generally occurs seasonally, especially in high pollen months, spring, summer or early fall. Not all people are affected by this allergy. Some are mildly affected. For others, immune system misunderstands allergens as harmful and releases the antibody called IgE (immunoglobulin E) to fight with it. This causes symptoms of hay fever. The symptoms could range from a mild congestion or sneezing to sweats, blocked sinuses, headaches and fatigue.

Hay fever is common during childhood; however, it can develop at any stage in a person’s life. It is believed that people with a family history of allergy and asthmatic patients are at a higher risk of developing it. Children born during pollen months as well as babies exposed to cigarette smoke during early years are also at risk of developing this allergy.

A proper diagnosis of the problem is the key to its management. The allergy is generally diagnosed through its symptoms. Sometimes, a blood test is conducted to test the level of immunoblobulinE. The level from 0 to 6 indicates the severity of the allergic reaction.

Allopathic medication offers a combination of interventions like desensitisation, anti-allergen tablets, steroids and quick relief nasal sprays.

Homeopathy, on the other hand, offers a different way of intervention. The patient is treated as per the symptoms restoring the body’s ability to self-heal thereby decreasing dependability on drugs. The best part being homeopathic drugs are free from chemicals and have no side effects.

You can choose to visit a homeopathy clinic or even self-treat through drugs available at homeopathy outlets where detailed symptoms and its prescribed dose can be found out. However, it is important to follow a prescribed dose at right intervals to ensure maximum benefit.

Homeopathic Remedies
