Excessive Facial Hair (Hirsutism) - Know Common Reasons Of Their Occurrence!

Women can find unwanted hair growth very embarrassing. This is especially true if she sports hair growth on her face. Excessive hair growth on a woman is also known as hirsutism. This differs from the usual fine 'peach fuzz' that covers the rest of the body. Such hair can be characterized as dark and coarse.

Hirsutism has a number of causes. Some of the most common reasons for this condition are:

-Genes

Hirsutism often runs in families. Thus if your mother or grandmother suffered from this skin condition, chances are that you may suffer from the same. This is most commonly seen in people from the Mediterranean region and south East Asia.

-Hormones

Hirsutism is also linked to an abnormally high level of male hormones like androgens in the body. This is usually seen in cases where women suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushings syndrome or tumors in the adrenal gland.

-Medication

A shift in hormone levels is also a common side effect of many types of medication. This is typically seen in drugs that include hormones such as anabolic steroids, drugs that spur hair growth and drugs that help with endometriosis

Facial hirsutism can be treated in a number of ways. Some of the ways to remove excess hair are:

-Shaving

This is an easy and quick way to remove unwanted skin. however, it may irritate the skin and with every shave, the hair growth may get coarser.

-Bleaching

This is a temporary solution for Hirsutism but may irritate the skin and does not suit dark skinned women.

-Waxing

When done regularly, waxing can reduce the amount of hair growth. However, this is a painful technique and can cause skin inflammation.

-Laser hair treatment

Compared to the above forms of hair removal, laser treatment can remove hair for the longest period of time. However, this is not a permanent solution and can have side effects like the lightening or darkening of skin.

-Electrolysis

This is permanent solution to hirsutism. It can require several sittings and may also lead to scarring or changes in skin colour.

-Medication

Prescription drugs can also change the way hair grows on the body. However, if you stop using this medication the hair growth with go back to its original form. Birth control pills and anti androgen blockers are the most common form of prescription drugs used to treat hirsutism.

Excessive Facial Hair - Laser Surgery To Get Rid Of Them!

Laser hair removal is a permanent hair removal method that makes use of laser beams to reach the hair follicles before the light from the beam is absorbed by the same. This method is preferred by people who do not want to go in for traditional methods like waxing, tweezing and epilating as these require regular sessions and may not always be convenient.

Laser surgery for facial hair removal helps your skin look younger and healthier by treating aging, acne, and blotches, scars, wrinkles, lines or excess hair on the face.

This surgery comes with its own share of benefits, which are:

  • First of all, laser hair removal is precise. The laser only targets the pigmented area of the skin on your face, such as the hair follicle. This is why only the hair follicle is burned and not the skin surrounding the area, making it a safe procedure.
  • Laser hair removal removes unwanted hair from your face at the speed of light. The laser is designed to treat several hairs in a large surface area, all at the same time. There is no downtime after the service and no sticky residue left behind.
  • The pain factor varies from person to person because every person has a different level of pain tolerance. Laser surgery is described as feeling like a gentle pinch or like the snap of a warm rubber band.
  • Laser hair removal is most effective on the hairs in the early part of the hair growing stage. A concentrated beam of light is aimed at the hair follicle. The laser then converts its energy into heat and heats up the hair follicle preventing it from growing any further.
  • Laser hair removal has many benefits that make it a viable option for many people to permanently deal with unwanted hair. You can ask many questions during your consultation to make sure you fully understand the procedure they use and how they deal with the treatment of pain.

What To Do If You Are Suffering From Excessive Facial Hair?

Every woman likes to look into the mirror and find not an extra strand of hair on her face, be it the upper lip or near the ears. While it is not uncommon for women to have hair on these and other areas, most women resort to multiple ways to get rid of this. The pattern of this unnecessary hair growth is very similar to the pattern seen in males normally.

This condition of excessive hair growth is known as hirsutism and can be caused by multiple causes, as listed below.

  1. Genetic or racial: While the European women have a more clean face that is free of hair, the Mediterranean and Indian women are highly likely to have more facial hair growth. There is also a strong family history relation, and it is hereditary.
  2. Androgens (testosterone): This is a male hormone, essential for the development of male sexual characters. Though it is present in very minute amounts in all women, in some, there could be higher than these minimal levels, leading to minor masculine characters, facial hair being one of them.
  3. Hormonal imbalances: There are multiple hormonal issues which can manifest as increased facial hair growth. The two most common ones include polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and adrenal conditions including tumours, Cushing's syndrome, and hyperplasia. In all these cases, there is increased amount of androgens, leading to excessive facial hair.
  4. Medication side effect: Some medications like testosterone, cyclosporine, anabolic steroids, and Minoxidil also lead to increased amounts of facial hair in women. Some other medications used to treat migraines, seizures, schizophrenia, and hypertension can also cause hirsutism. This is indirectly due to increased levels of male hormones in the system, producing these effects.
  5. Birth control pills: These also affect the hormone levels and lead to increased facial hair.
  6. Obesity: Most women with facial hair are also on the heavier side, and most people have a reduction in hair once weight is managed.

Treatment: The underlying cause should be treated for controlling hair growth. If there is an inducing medication, an alternative should be looked at. While hormone levels can be altered, in most cases, not much can be done. These need to be dealt with using one of the following methods - depilatory creams, waxing, plucking, shaving, laser reduction, electrolysis, and weight loss.

When reading through the above, it is obvious that a lot of causes for hirsutism point towards hormones. This also helps identify hormonal abnormalities in the earlier stages. This helps to identify hormonal disorders in their earlier stages, which are managed with lesser complications. The next time you feel there is more hair on your chin or cheeks, get your hormone levels checked.

Abnormal Hair Growth - How Homeopathy Can Manage It?

As a woman, it can be really very difficult to manage self-esteem and confidence when you suffer from excessive growth of hair on the face and other parts of the body. This condition is excessive hair growth on face and body is known as hirsutism.

Hirsutism is fairly common and mostly results due to excessive production of the male hormones, also known as androgens. Women with excessive hair on their face, chest, back, and other parts of the body have extremely high levels of the hormone testosterone.

But the good news is that hirsutism can be managed and its treatment is well-tolerated in a majority of women with excessive hair growth. The androgen levels are brought back with the help of treatment and do not aggravate unless there is a serious underlying medical condition behind it, including polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD).
Homeopathy treatment for hirsutism is quite popular. Homeopathic remedies work by treating the body as a whole. The homeopathic specialist chooses a medicine for an individual depending on the pathological condition that he or she is suffering from and after a thorough cases analysis and examination of the patient.

Allopathic remedies for hirsutism can be painful, expensive, and traumatic. Additionally, it can cause a number of side effects. Homeopathic treatment, on the other hand, is completely safe and inexpensive and can work magically against excessive hair growth in case of hirsutism. While allopathic remedies work by restricting the functioning of excessive androgens, homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the different glands to secrete hormones in required amounts.

Homeopathy Against Abnormal Hair Growth: Mode of Action

  1. It reduces the side effects of allopathic medications such as bloating, mood swings, laziness, and breast tenderness.
  2. It helps reduce genetic susceptibility to excessive hair growth.
  3. It acts on the different glands to stimulate the production of hormones only in desired amounts and suppresses the production of excessive hormones.
  4. As a result of proper secretion of hormones, hair growth gets reduced naturally.
  5. It helps reduce weight, which suppresses the production of excessive androgen and thereby, reduces hair growth.

There are 16 different homeopathic remedies available to treat hirsutism or excessive hair growth in females. Only an experienced homeopathic doctor is able to prescribe a medication based on the severity of your condition, overall physical examination, and genetic predisposition. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

How To Deal With Hirsutism In Women?

Dermatologist, Anand
How To Deal With Hirsutism In Women?

Are you growing hair in unusual places where you do not want them to be such as on the neck, chest, chin and back? Hirsutism is a medical term, which refers to excess body hair and facial hair in women. It occurs because of an increased production of androgens or male hormones. The increased sensitivity of the androgen receptors in the skin follicles also causes hirsutism.

Diagnosis
Hirsutism is diagnosed using two methods:

  1. The Ferriman Gallwey model involves the visual inspection for detecting the presence of excess hair. The amount of hair growth in nine areas of your body is quantified in this model. However, this is not an ideal method as many women shave or pluck their hair.
  2. Blood test for excess androgens is another method for diagnosis of hirsutism. The different tests include free testosterone, total testosterone and DHEAS or dehydropiandosterone sulphate. Women with PCOS are likely to have increased levels of free testosterone in their body because of the absence of enough sex hormone binding globulin.

Removing excess hair
There are several ways by which you can get rid of excess body and facial hair. They are as follows:

  1. Plucking is a way of hiding hair during early stages. It is an easy fix. However, plucking from the follicle may lead to the distortion of the follicle, which may cause hair to thicken and turn darker.
  2. Depilatories is another way of removing excess hair due to hirsutism. Depilatories remove excess hair by the use of a chemical which dissolves the hair.
  3. Waxing is also effective for removing excessive hair. In waxing, warm wax is spread over the affected areas; a strip of cloth is placed over it, and rubbed on the wax. After holding the skin tight, the cloth is pulled off.
  4. Several medicines are used for dealing with hirsutism in women such as oral contraceptives, which help in removing the amount of androgens in the body. The androgen production may decrease as a result of oral contraceptives. The amount of circulating concentration of androstenediones and total testosterone are also reduced. Anti androgen medicines are also prescribed in some cases.
  5. Electrolysis is opted as a measure of managing excessive hair. In the process, a needle gets inserted along the hair shaft. After this, an electric pulse is sent to the root. This makes the hair release from the follicles and they are pulled out.

Laser hair removal is the final option for hirsutism treatment. In this method, light from the laser eliminates several hairs in the affected area. The pigment present in the hair absorbs the energy from the laser and gets destroyed.
