Natural Body Reflexes & Understanding How Diseases Are Interrelated!

The basic principle of Ayurvedic medicine is based on a natural and preventative means of addressing and curing the root cause of diseases. It emphasizes, restoring the natural balance of the body. A specialized branch called the Swasthavritta is present in Ayurveda, which means the science for complete maintenance of health. The concept of ‘Vegadharan’ has been explained in the Swasthavritta. ‘Vega’ means natural urge and ‘dharan’ refers to suppression, hence vegadharan is defined as the suppression of natural urges. The two main types of natural urges are Dharniya, the ones that can be suppressed and adharniya, the ones that are not supposed to be suppressed. Expression of certain signals by the body are through the reflexes or urges.

The underlying cause of various diseases has been found to be a result of an excess of the Dharniya vegas. The most common dharniya vegas that affect the mind are ‘Manasika vegas’. These are certain natural or developed urges that are supposed to be suppressed by an individual.

They are as follows:

  1. Anger  (Krodha)
  2. Anguish (Vishada)
  3. Anxiety (Chittodvega)
  4. Arrogance (Mada)
  5. Ego (Ahankara)
  6. Envy (Irshya)
  7. Fear (Bhaya)
  8. Greediness (Lobha)
  9. Grief or (Shoka)
  10. Inferiority complex (Dainya)
  11. Jealousy (Abhyasuya)
  12. Lust (Kama)
  13. Pride (Maana)
  14. Shamelessness (Nirlajjata)

The suppression of natural urges that are adharniya vegas, can lead to cause ailments. There are 13 types of Udvarta rogas that correspond to the kind of suppression of the natural urges. Udvarta is the term that denotes upward or backward movement of the doshas that can cause diseases. The 13 natural urges that are related to cause diseases on suppression are as follows:

According to Ayurveda, various ailments are caused by suppression of natural urges, known as vega-vidharan. Acharya Sushruta, an ancient Indian Ayurvedic physician, who is considered the “Father of Plastic Surgery,” described 13 types of udavarta rogas, corresponding to the kinds of suppression of natural urges. Udavarta is a Sanskrit word that means upward, backward, or reverse movement of vata dosha and rogas(diseases).

These 13 natural urges are related to the following:

  1. Urine – Mutra vega – Can cause pain in the bladder region and urinary calculi
  2. Feces - Purish vega – Causes pain in calf muscles, headache
  3. Semen – Shukra vega – Causes swelling and pain of genitals, calculi, impotence
  4. Flatus – Vaata vega – Can cause abdominal pain, constipation
  5. Vomiting – Chardi vega- Causes rashes, herpes, skin diseases
  6. Sneezing – Kshavatu vega- Causes a headache, facial paralysis, neck stiffness.
  7. Eructation (belching) – Kasa vega – Can lead to loss of appetite
  8. Yawning – Jrumbha vega – Causes headache, facial paralysis, neck stiffness.
  9. Hunger – Kshudha vega – Causes pain in abdomen, emaciation.
  10. Thirst – Trushna vega – Causes generalized debility, delusion, emaciation.
  11. Tears – Ashru vega- Can cause running nose, pain in eyes and head.
  12. Sleep – Nidra vega – Can cause lethargy, pain in eyes and head, delusion.
  13. Rapid breathing from exertion – Shramshvas vega – Can lead to an abdominal tumor, heart diseases.

Suppression of these urges creates a defective and improper signaling in the autonomic nervous system and hence makes way for causing diseases. Natural urges or reflexes should neither be suppressed nor be initiated, as both can cause an imbalance and lead to diseases.

Few things regarding headache so that we can plan treatment accordingly 1) If pain is associated with blurred or decreased vision than check your eyesight for refractive error 2) If the pain is pulsatile in nature and with a throbbing pain usually with an aura than we have to rule out Migrane as the cause and 3) If the pain is associated with neck problems than we have to rule out cervical spondylosis as the cause 4) If the pain is associated with either a low or high BP or due to hyperacidity than we have to treat the cause after examination 5) If the pain is associated with cold and fever than we have to rule out sinusitis as the cause

Eye Pain - 7 Tips To Help You Manage It!

Are you suffering from eye pain? Well, rubbing your eyes is not a wise thing to do under such circumstances. Rubbing will only turn the white of your eye into a scarlet-colored surface. The eyes can get irritated due to the influence of foreign materials like dust particles, flies or remains of beauty products. The eyes also develop pain due to physical injury. Here are some tips to get rid of the eye pain or irritation:

  1. Use Ice pack: In case of an injury, apply ice pack on the eyes. Cold compression on the eyes for 15 minutes reduces any sort of pain or swelling.
  2. Cry to smile: Tears are known to have positive effects on the eyes. They prevent the drying up of cornea. It is advisable to bathe the eye with artificial tears.
  3. Compress your eyes: It is advisable to soak a washcloth in warm water and compress your eyes with that to get relief from pain in sty. Sty is an infection of the eyelid, which reddens the lids and causes pain. Warm compression helps in liquefaction of the oils in the eyes.
  4. Wash your eye: Irritation or pain is also caused by dust particles in the eyes. Therefore, it is best to wash your eyes with saline solution. Don't use normal tap water or distilled water for washing your eyes.
  5. Get rid of the invader: Try to remove or dislodge any fleck or speck 'the cause of pain' by using a cotton swab.
  6. Try the cold treatment: It has been found that dry eyes can be treated best by cold application. Apply a pack of ice on dry eyes for 5 to 6 minutes in every two hours. This helps in reducing the pain and forms tears to keep the eyes moist.
  7. Flip your eyelids: Try to remove the painful particle inside the eyes by pulling the eyelids. Pull the upper lid gently over the lower one so that the foreign particle comes out.

Vision Loss In Elderly People - Tips To Prevent It!

Vision Loss In Elderly People - Tips To Prevent It!

A person is said to have great vision more in the metaphorical way than in the literal sense. However, having both is just so important, especially as the ability to see reduces as a person gets older. Old age comes with its own set of problems, and vision loss is one of them. If kept in check from an early age, however, vision loss can be deferred indefinitely.

While a person's eyesight is likely to deteriorate over the course of his life, there is a lot which can be done in an effort to make sure that this is not the case. To start with, it makes good sense to be regular with eye check-ups. After a person attains the age of sixty, he or she should have a doctor take a look at his or her eyes on a yearly basis. There is no point trying to conserve eye sight if a person is too late in taking corrective action. By paying a visit to the ophthalmologist, a person will get to know the exact problem that he is suffering from.

A good diet which is rich in the nutrients which improve a person's eye sight does go a very long way in the long run. A person should make sure that is diverse enough to take care of the needs of a person and should include grapefruit, strawberries as well as berries and nuts.

One of the main things which can be done in order to preserve the health of a person's eyes until he or she reaches an advanced age is to stop smoking in all forms. As a matter of fact, tobacco leads to cyanide entering the blood stream and this does a lot of damage to the eyes. In fact, quite a few irreversible conditions of the eye are caused due to this.

Exercise is said to be good for a person at any age for a variety of reasons and it is really good for even the eyes, though the link may not be immediately so clear. It reduces the risk of age related degeneration by up to 70 per cent!

What is really interesting about a person's eyes is that they can be signs of trouble in other parts of the body. For example, if a person has blurry vision, they should get checked for diabetes. Also, eyes which do not produce enough natural lubrication can show a risk of rheumatoid arthritis and perhaps even thyroid disease.

All in all, a person's eyesight is so crucial to his or her overall health and wellbeing. We have only one pair of eyes, so we might as well take care of them! In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Foreign Object In Eyes - How Can They Be Treated?

Foreign Object In Eyes - How Can They Be Treated?

Anything that enters the eye from outside and causes inflammation or irritation, or even an abrasion, among varied other problems, can be termed as a foreign body. This foreign body usually ends up having an effect on the conjunctiva or the cornea. While the cornea is the outer layer that protects the eye, the conjunctiva is the membrane that covers the white portion of the eye. Here are a few ways for understanding and treating the entry of foreign objects into the eye.

Symptoms: To begin with, one must understand the symptoms so as to recognise the problem. A feeling of pressure or discomfort will be experienced by the patient, who will feel as though something is preventing him or her from shutting the eye properly. At the same time, too much tear formation and pain in the eyes will also point at the entry of the foreign object while redness and bloodshot eyes are also a common sight at such instances. The patient may be forced to blink at more than the normal rate, while glares of light will create pain and discomfort.

Causes: There are many kinds of foreign objects that can enter the eyes including fine substances like saw dust, dirt, grime, dust, sand and even the dust of cosmetics. Also, eye lashes, dried mucus, shards of glass and metal particles may enter the eyes and create an emergency situation. When the wind sweeps debris up, it may fall into a person’s eyes and settle there.

Prompt Action: As soon as you feel like something has entered your eye and does not seem to be leaving it even after continuous blinking, then you will need to see a doctor in the Emergency Unit of your hospital. Do not rub your eyes at all, as the foreign object may cause cuts inside and lead to bleeding and other complications. You must take special care to notice whether or not the object in the eye is sharp and is preventing you from shutting your eye properly, in which case immediate medical intervention and diagnosis will be required.

Treating the Foreign Object: With the aim of removing this object, the doctor may administer anaesthetic drops before using a fluorescein dye to find out what kind of object has entered. A moist cotton swab will be used for removal and an antibiotic ointment will be prescribed for any cuts. Acetaminophen can treat the pain while a CT scan can investigate any intraocular object.

You can also use a wet cloth to rinse and remove the object at home, but blurry vision and pain must be taken to an ophthalmologist immediately. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions! In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Contact Lens - How To Care For Them?

Contact Lens - How To Care For Them?

There are a number of eye conditions that make the use of glasses and eye lenses mandatory for a more comfortable life where your vision is as normal as is medically possible. Poor eyesight and conditions like inward eyelids and others can lead to the prescription of contact lenses and glasses. Contact lenses are delicate optical tools that glide easily over your eyes and need a lot of care. One should also know how to wear them properly. If one does not wear and care for the contact lenses properly, it may lead to a variety of complications. Read on to know how you can take better care of your contact lenses.

Cleanliness: To begin with, keeping the lenses clean is of utmost importance. Since these lenses will go on to the eye and remain there for most part of the day, it is imperative that they should be clean so that no dirt comes to settle on the eye to cause complications and even possible infections in the long run. While the disposable soft contact lenses do not need a whole lot of care as they can be disposed as and when the wearer needs a new pair, the soft lenses are the ones that need regular care so as to avoid vision affecting problems in the long run.

Clean Hands: Before you handle the contact lenses, you must wash and clean your hands thoroughly with a non cosmetic soap that is free of additives like fragrances and artificial perfumes, oils and other lotions. These may get transferred to the lens which will leave you with blurry vision. Dry your hands properly using a lint free towel.

Makeup: If you have to wear makeup, we would suggest doing so after you have safely installed the contact lenses in your eyes. Also, you must remember to remove your lenses before you begin the makeup removal procedure. This is to be done so that you do not get any makeup on to the delicate surface of the lens.

Disinfecting Solution: When you buy your contact lenses, you will also get a disinfecting solution as well as a set of instructions for taking care of your lenses. So ensure that you use the correct disinfecting solution, eye drops as well as the prescribed enzymatic cleaners to keep your lenses clean and free of germs with a light rubbing action. Let the lenses stand in this solution at night too so that the germs cannot travel to the surface.
Never use tap water or your mouth to clean these lenses as the microorganisms found even in distilled water can latch on to the surface. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
