Top 12 Foods In Omega-6

Eating omega-6 foods usually isn’t a problem for most people, but if you need to boost your omega-6 levels, there are plenty of great foods to do it with.

Omega-6 foods: The best omega-6 essential fatty acid (linoleic acid) foods include corn puffs, sausage, butter, beef, eggs, safflower oil, sunflower seed oil, and brazil nuts, among many others. These levels are based on 100-gram servings, which is an exceedingly large amount for some of these foods, particularly the oils. On average, you should consume roughly 3, 000 milligrams of this fatty acid every day.

  • Safflower oil: A 100-gram serving contains nearly 75 grams of linoleic acid.
  • Sunflower seeds: There are 34 grams of this fatty acid (linoleic acid) in a 100-gram serving of sunflower seeds.
  • Butter: There are 37 grams of this polyunsaturated fat in this serving of butter.
  • Beef: This contains less than 300 milligrams of omega-6.
  • Eggs: There are 3500 milligrams of this fat in a 100-gram serving.
  • Sausage: More than 4000 milligrams are in a 100-gram serving.
  • Mayonnaise: There are over 40 grams of omega-6 in each 100-gram serving.
  • Flax/linseed oil: There are two grams of omega-6 per teaspoon of this oil.
  • Sesame seeds: There are more than 20 grams of omega-6 in 100 grams of these seeds.
  • Pumpkin seedsThese seeds also have over 20 grams of this linoleic acid.
  • Walnut oil: Nearly 53 grams of omega-6 are present in 100 grams of this oil.
  • Brazil nuts: These nuts have over 27 grams per 100-gram serving.
  • Other foods: Other foods rich in omega 6 include chocolate chip cookies, chicken, grape seed oil, evening primrose oil, borage oil, blackcurrant seed oil, canola oil, hemp oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, poppy seed oil, and acai berries.

What is omega-6?

Omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid) are a group of roughly a dozen different polyunsaturated fats that are commonly found in vegetable products, particularly vegetable oils. However, they are found in small to moderate quantities in many other foods as well. Experts recommend consuming an even 1: 1 ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids for optimal health.

Different fats within the omega-6 classification can have both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties. When it comes to the benefits of this family of fats, they are important for the following:

  • Promote brain development
  • Improve nervous system health
  • Soothe symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Support bone health
  • Manage cardiovascular health

Treating Thyroid Related Hair Loss With Natural Remedies!

The thyroid gland situated in the neck (front of the neck) is responsible for the production of the thyroid hormones- T3, T4, and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). Thyroid problem surfaces when these hormones are either produced in elevated or in reduced amounts. The problem is often triggered by improper functioning of the thyroid gland. Some of the medical complications that this gives rise to include Hyperthyroidism (elevated production of thyroid hormones), Hypothyroidism (reduced production of thyroid hormones), Goitre (enlargement of the thyroid gland).

Thyroid Hair Loss
The hair loss is one of the many associated symptoms of Thyroid disorder. Thyroid problems often trigger a hormonal imbalance, not only of the thyroid hormones but the steroid hormones as well. This imbalance contributes significantly towards a lot of hair problems including, thinning of the scalp, hair fall (can be quite severe at times). In extreme cases, this may even lead to baldness. Both Hyperthyroidism, as well as Hypothyroidism, may lead to the hair loss and other related hair problems.

Natural Remedies For Thyroid-related Hair Loss
While medications may go along way to keep the thyroid problems under control, there are natural remedies available to deal with thyroid-related hair loss.

  1. Coconut oil comes with a bag full of health benefits. A rich source of saturated fats, daily consumption of coconut oil (1 tablespoon) can bring about a significant improvement in people with hypothyroidism. You can also go for a hot coconut oil massage of the scalp. Keep it for about 30 minutes and wash off with a mild shampoo. This hot oil massage will improve the circulation and stimulate the hair growth. You can also add curry leaves and fenugreek seeds to coconut oil, warm and strain the mixture and then use it for hair massage.
  2. The evening primrose oil is another oil that can work wonders to ensure a healthy hair growth. Laden with GLA or gamma-linolenic acid (omega-6 fatty acid), this oil is known to restore the hormonal balance (a factor responsible for hair loss). You can consume the oil in the capsule form as well as use it for a hair and scalp massage.
  3. Taking biotin supplements can be of great help but only when a doctor recommended.
  4. The role of Vitamins (especially Vitamin C and E) in ensuring a healthy hair growth is known to all. Enrich your diet with foods rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin E (citrus fruits, avocados, almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach, palm oil) to deal with thyroid hair loss with elan.
  5. Sea Kelp can also help to restore the normal functioning of the thyroid gland thereby reversing the hair fall. You can have it either as dried flakes or in supplement form.
  6. Ayurveda and the natural herbs can work miracles to deal with the thyroid disorder and the related hair problems. The herbs commonly used include Amla, Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Bhringaraaja, Neem, to name a few.

Hair Loss During Menopause - How It Can Be Treated?

Hair Loss During Menopause - How It Can Be Treated?

Menopause brings about a lot of changes (physical, mental, emotional) within a woman. From hormonal imbalance to mood swings, she braves them all. One of the common occurrence associated with menopause is hair fall. As already mentioned, the hormonal imbalance is an integral part of menopause. The testosterone level shoots up while there is a dip in the estrogen level. The testosterone produced in excess gets converted to another hormone - Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the main wrecker in chief that latches itself to the hair follicles. As a result, the hair follicle abruptly enters into the resting phase or the Telogen phase. There is thus an increased hair fall with reduced hair regrowth.

The deficiency of estrogen is also known to cause dryness of the scalp, thereby accelerating the hair loss. The hair loss can also be an outcome of stress, insomnia, or any other health problems triggered by menopause. Natural remedies for treating hair loss triggered by Menopause

  1. Hormone Replacement Therapy: It can go a long way to balance the hormone thereby arresting the hair loss. However natural remedies along with a proper diet and healthy lifestyle habits can also work wonders to deal with the hair loss.
  2. Moisturize the Scalp: Keeping the scalp well nourished and moisturized can help to combat the hair loss. To deal with the dryness, you can massage your scalp with the extracts of Aloe vera for about 15 minutes and then wash it off with a mild shampoo. The use of hibiscus paste or neem paste (antifungal, antibacterial properties) will also produce fruitful results.
  3. Oil massage: An oil massage (coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, evening primrose oil) will improve the circulation, ensuring healthy hair growth. The evening primrose oil is also effective in inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to DHT. (You can also consume it in capsule form). Go for a warm oil massage at least twice a week, keep it for 30 minutes and rinse it off with a mild shampoo that suits your hair.
  4. Hair mask: A hair mask comprising of olive oil and egg is known to promote hair growth to a great extent. All you need is two eggs (well beaten) and olive oil (~ 4 tbsp). Mix the ingredients well and apply it throughout your hair. Wash it off after 10 minutes.
  5. Drink fluids: For people dealing with hair problems, keeping the body well hydrated is important. In addition to water, you can also sip on coconut water or fresh fruit juice at regular time intervals. In fact, papaya, watermelon, cucumber are also known to keep the body hydrated and moisturized.
  6. Healthy lifestyle habits: Do not compromise with your sleep. Maintain the body weight within healthy limits. Exercise regularly (30 minutes a day can also be of great help).
  7. Smoking and drinking should be within limits. Avoid getting overstressed (meditation and breathing exercise may help).
  8. Switch over to a healthy and nutritious diet: Include more of proteins, vitamins (Vitamin C and E), lots of fruits and vegetables, foods rich in antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids into your diet.

Hot Flashes Post Menopause - How To Treat Them?

How to treat hot flashes after menopause?
A hot flash, at times called a hot flush, is a speedy sensation of heat and once in a while a red, flushed face accompanied by sweating. The exact reason for hot flashes is not known, but rather might be associated with changes in circulation. Hot flashes happen when the blood vessels close to the skin's surface widen to cool. A woman may likewise sweat to chill off her body. What is more, a few ladies have a fast heart rate or chills. Hot flashes are the most common symptom of menopause.

Hot flashes differ among women experiencing menopause. A few of them have hot flashes for a brief span during menopause. Other ladies may have hot flashes forever. For the most part, hot flashes are less extreme over time. You most likely cannot maintain a strategic distance from hot flashes during menopause, yet there are things that might make them more serious. To prevent hot flashes, keep away from these triggers:

  1. Stress
  2. Caffeine
  3. Liquor
  4. Spicy nourishments
  5. Tight clothing
  6. Heat
  7. Tobacco or smoke

Different things you can do to keep hot flashes under control include:

  1. Stay cool: Keep your room cool during the evening. Use fans during the day. Wear light layers of garments with regular strands, for example, cotton. Using cooling pads to lay your head on during the evening may be useful.
  2. Breathing: Try deep and moderate stomach breathing (six to eight breaths for each moment). Try to relax for fifteen minutes in the morning, fifteen minutes at night and at the onset of hot flashes.
  3. Exercise: Exercise every day. Walking, swimming, moving, and bicycling are all great ways to keep fit and keep hot flashes at bay.
  4. Hormone substitution treatment: Talk to your specialist about taking hormone substitution treatment, or HRT, for a brief span – less than 5 years. This treatment prevents hot flashes from occurring in numerous women. In addition, it can help different symptoms of menopause, including vaginal dryness and mood issue. Remember that when you quit taking HRT, the hot flashes may return. Short-term HRT has a few dangers, including blood clots and gallbladder aggravation. In case that HRT is not a good fit for you, there are different medicines that may offer help.
  5. Botanicals and herbs: Some herbs can help soothe the hot flashes. These are:
    • Soy items: Plant estrogens, found in soy items, are thought to have weak estrogen-like impacts that may decrease hot flashes. Soy food and not supplements are prescribed.
    • Dark cohosh: A few studies propose that dark cohosh might be useful in the short-term (six months or less) to treat hot flashes and night sweats. Symptoms include gastrointestinal problems.
    • Evening primrose: This oil is another plant that is regularly used to treat hot flashes. Symptoms include queasiness and loose bowels. Ladies taking certain medicines, for example, blood thinners, should not take evening primrose oil.
    • Flaxseed: This is thought to diminish the side effects of menopause, especially hot flashes. It's otherwise called linseed. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Endocrinologist.
