As your mother is having metastatic lung cancer she would have had primary site if her cancer somewhere else in her body which after treatment or with no treatment now has reached her lungs. The ideal treatment for your mother is to go for radio or chemo therapy but as a family member if you have decided not to go for that there are palliative treatment options available for her which will not treat the cancer but can give her some relief from her severe bone pain.

Organ toxicities may be more problematic in the elderly, but in most tumours, the efficacy of chemotherapy is not age dependent. Chemotherapy, where indicated for advanced cancer, can therefore be safely and effectively used in selected elderly patients. Managing advanced cancer in the elderly is an increasing problem.

Cancers of gi tract are difficult to cure but not impossible to cure. According to the available data after being diagnosed with stomach cancer, 31.5% of people survive five years or more. If that has to be taken as a benchmark his chances are 1 out of 3. I wouldn't be dishearted if I have as much chance of surviving something.
