One should be careful while treating it. Please do have your Xray followed by MRI. Management is based on medical as well as surgical one. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) refers to the narrowing of blood vessels that in turn causes poor blood flow to the limbs. This is also known as peripheral vascular disease. The blood vessels of the legs are most susceptible to this condition. PAD is typically caused by a buildup of plaque in the blood vessels. This limits the amount of blood that can pass through the arteries. High cholesterol, blood pressure and smoking are all contributors to this condition.

Absolutely, smoking will harm the nerves too and he can aggravate the neuropathy. Quitting alcoholism is a tremendous achievement but he has to give up the smoking too. Get him to an addiction counselor and that help may resolve it for him. In the recommendation of the counselor he can also seek the help of medication and nicotine substitutes to ease the quitting scene.
