Dear lybrate-user, Your father needs to be assessed by a physiotherapist and depending upon his assessment and clinical skills, will help you coming to some prognosis. Generally recovery chances are always there but that depends upon the location and severity of the injury. If the injury to the spinal cord is complete, then recovery chances are almost nil but if there is partial or incomplete injury then chances of recovery to some extent increases.

Hello, The Unstable cervical fractures require fixation with cage. But the recovery following spinal cord injuries is very variable and unpredictable some people regain function over 6 mo to a year with proper physiotherapy. Some may not recover any function and may remain bed ridden for ever. A MRI of spinal cord can predict the grade of injury and if recovery possible or not. You can take a second opinion with a neurosurgeon with the reports before surgery.
