Dermaroller: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Dermaroller is a hand held device that has a roller with hundreds of tiny micro needles attached to it and is used for skin needling treatment. The process of using dermaroller to clean and enhance your skin health is called dermarolling.

Dermarolling is a skin treatment and dermaroller is the device that is used to carry out the process. The dermaroller is rolled over the skin in order to create tiny skin punctures which helps in skin repairing. The whole process leads to the creation of new collagen that is part of the connective tissue that is responsible for the strength, firmness, suppleness and elasticity in skin.

How is the treatment done?

Dermarolling is a self treatment done by using dermaroller. The micro needles can range between 0.5mm to 3mm in length which is rolled over on skin surface for 10 to 15 minutes once every week. The process is slow and can take up to 4 to 6 weeks to show positive results. The main purpose of dermaroller is to create collagen that is a bodily protein made up of amino acids. The short term wounding of the skin is done to trigger skin repair leading to the creation of new collagen. The new skin formed by the newly created collagen helps in removing scars, facial lines and wrinkles, sun damage and sunburn, acne and also helps in anti ageing.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

If you are having any skin problems such as scars, acne, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles, you are eligible to treat the condition using a dermaroller. However, you should consult a skin specialist before opting for dermarolling.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Different people have different skin type and sensitivity. If you have a very sensitive skin type that is very reactive to new products and therapy then you should avoid dermarolling.

Are there any side effects?

Dermaroller is a very safe and easy mode of skin treatment but there are chances of some minor side effects if not used properly. Some of the most common side effects you will notice is the redness of the skin that will last for few hours, mild inflammation and dryness and some sun sensitivity for the first couple of days.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

After using dermaroller, there are a lot of things that you need to take care of in order to avoid any major side effects. Aloe vera gel is applied to calm and soothe the skin. You should not touch your face with dirty hands, new and aggressive skin care products should be completely avoided, avoid intensive sunlight and you should also avoid sauna, hot showers until the redness has gone. Fake tan should also be applied after 7 days of using dermaroller.

How long does it take to recover?

Generally the treatment takes at least 4 to 6 weeks to show some results. As for the side effects, some of them hardly last for a couple of hours and some may last for a couple of days.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

The price of dermaroller varies greatly depending on the quality and the features. Some of the dermarollers are available in the market for INR 200 and some can go up to INR 3000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The results of using dermaroller is never permanent as the skin is prone to changes quickly. In some cases such as removing stretch marks, the results are almost permanent in some cases.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Dermaroller is itself an alternate for skin treatments if you are not willing to take any allopathic and homeopathic medicines. It is a natural process of skin repairing so all the other drugs and cosmetics that are available in the market for skin repairing are the alternative. Acupuncture, yoga, Ayurveda and meditation has also a lot of potent techniques for skin repairing which can also be treated as an alternate for dermaroller.

Safety: High Effectiveness: Medium Timeliness: Medium Relative Risk: Low Side Effects: Medium Time For Recovery: Low Price Range:

INR 200 - INR 3000.

Cell Active Therapy For Hair Growth!

Whether you’re a man or a woman, whether you have long tresses or a short crop, no one likes the thought of going bald. Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors. It may be in your genes, it could be because of your lifestyle or it could even be the result of hormonal changes. Thankfully, you don’t have to just sit back and watch yourself grow bald, you can treat it.

Cell active therapy is a form of treatment that is aimed at boosting new hair growth. This can be used to treat receding hairline, bald patches, thinning hair and alopecia. Cell active therapy is called so because it activates cells in the scalp and hair follicles by stimulating blood circulation. As the hair follicles are energized, new hair growth is triggered. It also stimulates collagen production that improves skin tone and elasticity. Cell active therapy does not require hospitalization of any kind. All you need is a dermaroller.

What is a dermaroller?

A dermaroller is a simple device that looks a lot like a round bristled brush on a long handle. Instead of bristles to untangle your hair, this has metal pins that can make tiny pinpricks on your scalp. The width of a dermaroller ranges from 0.25mm to 0.5mm with the latter being more popular. This penetrates only as far as your dermal layer to stimulate blood circulation and new cell production. Using a dermaroller is relatively painless.

Using the dermaroller

Before you use a dermaroller, it is essential to clean your scalp properly and clean the dermaroller. The dermaroller must be sanitized with boiling hot water each time it is used to reduce the chances of infection. If you already have a scalp infection, do not use a dermaroller until the infection clears up. Once the dermaroller has cooled down; run it over the bald areas of your scalp. You will need to apply a light pressure so as to allow the pins to penetrate your scalp without drawing blood.

A dermaroller can be used indefinitely, but you should start seeing an improvement in your hair growth quite soon.

Doctor advise me to take dermaroller for acne scars. My question are 1.is it safe to take dermaroller any side effects in future? 2.result from dermaroller are permanent?

MCh Plastic Surgery, MS - General Surgery
Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon, Bangalore
Hello, Derma roller or microneedling are good option for collagen induction and reduce scar. Dermapen is better than dermaroller as roller tend to damage skin little due to oblique entry of needles. Microneedling is a safe procedure will need 6-8 sessions and can expect moderate results. You can consult in private with photographs to assess if you are a good candidate for microneedling.

MCh Plastic Surgery, MS - General Surgery

Hello, Dermaroller helps in areas where there is reduced hair density, not areas which are completely bald. You can try dermaroller and minoxidil for 6-8 sessions. The results are moderate.

Hello, I will try to use dermaroller on my face to treat acne scare please help me which dermaroller should I use, there are many dermaroller available online I don't know which one to buy and which company.

MCh Plastic Surgery, MS - General Surgery
Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon, Bangalore
Hello, Dermaroller can be used but causes more dermal damage as needles enter and exit obliquely alternatively microneedling with derma pen is better. Dermaroller for face you will need 0.75 or 1 mm it needs topical anesthetic cream and does cause pinpoint bleeding so a lot of sterility is required to prevent infection. Its not ideal to do it at home. Consult a dermatologist.

Facial Scars - Causes & Remedies
Hello everyone!

I am Dr. Rashmi Shinde consultant Dermatologist and Cosmetologist practising in Mumbai. Today I will be talking about a very specific issue that is Scar. I am sure you must have heard a lot about scars. We have seen it in adds, everyday newspaper articles and seen on some posters as well. What are these cars? How are they formed? What do they look like? I will be discussing that today. So scars are basically the depressions or the pits on the surface of the skin. Skin is supposed to be plain or even throughout but due to any damage to the skin, because of pimples or an infection or boils or even due to an injury, the damage occurs. And the skin then starts repairing itself. There is a healing process which goes on. For a normal healing process to occur there is something known as Collagen which is very essential. Collagen is present in the deeper layers of the skin and it forms a good network which maintains our skin's firmness and smoothness. During the healing process if this collagen network is not formed properly or is insufficient or not very organised then the scars are visible.

So now that we know that collagen or inadequate collagen production is the major cause of scars then we know that the primary target for any treatment of scars should be focusing on collagen. Many times patients ask me that- Can creams be used for the treatment of scars? and fortunately, the answer is no. Creams do help to a certain extent. It can be used for newly formed scars or very small scars but it is not beneficial for the majority of the scars or the larger scars. Nevertheless, we have a number of modalities that we offer to our patients of which there are two primary modalities that I will be talking about today. One is micro needling technique which is done by dermaroller. Second is a very innovative technology known as Nano Fractional Radio Frequency. So micro needling is basically done with this device known as dermaroller. This consists of a handle and a barrel-shaped end on the top of which there are multiple pins. The procedure is very straightforward.

The first numbing cream is applied on the surface of the area to be treated and then this dermaroller is rolled on the skin on the scars in a particular fashion whereby it starts healing the skin producing more collagen. Dermaroller works very well for the very superficial scar, smaller scars but for deeper scars we need to use something else. Then comes the Nano Fractional Radio Frequency. It's not a laser but an energy-based device where the radio frequency energy penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin and causes stimulation of collagen and repairing of the elder collagen. So that is why it is very good and very effective. It is also effective because it works across all skin colours and all skin types.

So even sensitive skin can type and even darker skin types can equally take advantage of this technology. Now I will be demonstrating a small video of how the procedure is done. It's a very simple straightforward procedure. This is the Nano fractional radio frequency device which will be demonstrated today. The patient is first cleaned thoroughly. The area to be treated is to be cleaned and then a numbing cream may or may not be applied depending on the patient's preference. Then we start with the procedure directly. The probe is placed on the surface of the skin and the radio frequency energy is delivered to the scarred area. As we can see the patient is very much comfortable. So it is a very simple and painless and yet very effective procedure for the treatment of scars. The major advantage of Nano fractional radio frequency is that it has a very less downtime.

Very less downtime I mean that the redness after the procedure is very minimal and it is gone in one or two days. So it is very convenient for especially the working population. To summarise what we have talked about till now is that scars are formed as a part of the healing response of the body to any kind of injury to the body. There could be a number of modalities which are available nowadays for the treatment of scars of which we discussed micro needling and Nano fractional radio frequency. For more information or to book an appointment with me, you can visit Lybrate.

Acne - Ways To Treat It!
Hello, everyone

I am Dr Mansi Sanghvi, I am the founder and medical director of Skin 360 Skin Hair and Laser Clinic, we are located at Pawai in Mumbai. I have been practicing as a Dermatologist and skin and hair expert over the last 10 years in Mumbai.

Today I will be talking to you about very common health problem that faces todays youth and that is pimples, marks and scar management. Acne which is commonly known as pimples is no longer limited to the Teenage it is now happening moreso in the adulthood and in adult life. Acne has been attacking people after they turn 22-23, so why is that happening, what is the cause of this type of acne? The cause lies in the hormonal imbalance which is again multifactorial in origin, it could be related to stress, dietary changes, lack of sleep, sedentary Lifestyle or simply using cosmetics which are not good for your health. Hormone imbalance clogs the pores which eventually leads to the pimples, pimples are of various types it could be small black heads or white heads or it could be a big puss filled pimples. Now how to manage it? The management starts at a simple baseline which is to use the right antibiotic cream which is prescribed by your Dermatologist and to do certain simple treatments in doctor's clinic. Those treatment include chemical peels, now these peels are derived from fruit acids which helps to exfoliate the excessive dead skin of your face and eventually leads to unclogging the pores, so that your skin can breathe and it reduces the pimples and inflammation. If this approach does not work we go to the second line of Management, which is to give you oral antibiotics which help to reduce the bacteria that causes pimples. Once this antibiotics work, the inflammation goes down and then what we are left with is some marks to deal with. Now how the marks are treated, marks are treated with again chemical peels which are specifically derived from sugarcane and they are called glycolic acid which are famous these days. This peel reduces the pigmentation and concentration of melanin in your skin eventually giving you a better looking skin texture and colour. The third issue that we need to deal is the scars that the acne leaves behind they are nothing but dark depressions on the skin, it is very important to treat them as early as possible otherwise they become a lifelong marks on your face. The scars are treated with Technologies like laser resurfacing or a simple dermaroller which causes resurfacing of the scar or eventually much lesser appearing marks. How Your HAIR LOSS or BALDNESS is Completely Reversible (Without Surgery): PART-1
How your hair loss or baldness is completely reversible (non-surgically)

Having deeply researched hair loss, I have devised a solution to promote hair growth. I would like to share with you how it happens in two parts.

Here's part 1

Is your hair fall normal or abnormal (excessive)?

Average daily normal hair fall is 100-150 and anything above that are considered abnormal hair fall.

What causes abnormal hair fall?

Males: males pattern hair loss (most common cause), telogen effluvium, stress, smoking, etc.

Females: chronic telogen effluvium (most common cause), female pattern hair loss, pregnancy-induced, stress, due to medicines like cancer therapy, cosmetic procedures - straightening, rebonding etc,

How does hair loss affect us?

Destroys looks and confidence

Affects social life

Causes inferiority complex

What are effective and scientifically proven treatments for hair loss?

Medicines (solutions):

Minoxidil, amenexil tablets

Finasteride, dutasteride

Surgical:

Hair transplant, scalp reduction surgery

Non-surgical:

Platelet rich plasma (prp), dermaroller (microneedling)

Apart from this, multivitamins, stem cell therapy and various other treatments done have no scientific proof for giving best results.

What is the best non-surgical treatment?

'innovative prp' with derma roller is by far the most effective (research method by Dr. Jeetendra khatuja).

What is prp?

Platelet-rich plasma (prp); an autologus solution (made with patient's own blood) hence it is completely safe and with no side effects. Prp is an effective concentration of multiple growth factors (present in platelets like pdgf, vegf, egf, etc) which stimulate hair follicles to grow.

How does prp work?

Prp contains a high concentration of special cells called platelets (with multiple growth factors) in prp stimulate roots of hair follicles to promote hair re-growth.

During hair loss, the length and diameter of hair reduce and hair enter a 'resting stage' or 'arrested growth stage'. When an enough number of hair enter this stage, scalp becomes visible producing 'baldness'.

Prp causes a shift of hair follicles from 'resting stage' to 'active growth stage', thereby reverses the process of hair loss.

How is prp prepared?

There are various methods for preparing prp, but most of these methods are not effective.

The unique method developed by Dr. Jeetendra khatuja is called 'innovative prp' or iprp.

We draw 8ml of patient's blood and process it in special tubes with the help of centrifuge machine. The method has been standardised over the years for best results.

How prp is given?

Under all safety precautions, the treatment area is numbed under local anesthesia and prp is injected to cover the whole bald area.

What are the risks and side-effects of prp?

There are no risks or side-effects involved since prp is prepared from your own blood.

How long does prp treatment take?

Preparation of prp takes 15-20 minutes and actual treatment takes 10-15 minutes, so the whole treatment takes about 30-40 minutes only.

This is followed by a derma roller treatment, which is explained in part 2.
